Indentations in my skull
Recently, in the past year or two, I noticed some indentations in my skull that show up occasionally. I’ve yet to find any information about them on Google or the like (Web MD, etc), so I’m hoping by posting here, perhaps Google will pick it up and someone else with the same situation may have an idea.
The dents are symmetrical, mirrored across the left and right halves. They’re about 5cm long and 1.5cm wide — sometimes larger in both dimensions. I only noticed them because of a nervous tendency to mess with my hair. They’re not there all the time. I’ve only noticed them late at night — tonight is the earliest, being only around 10:30PM.
Since I can’t predict when they’ll be there, I can’t see myself going to a doctor to explain all of this, wasting money and time on something he wouldn’t be able to witness. Plus, it’s not associated with any pain or dizzyness or anything like that — perhaps only tiredness, but that’s probably due to the hour more than the dent. It could be nothing, but nobody I have spoken to about it has found it familiar. It’s a mystery.
That was paget disease
Hey, found your site by accident doing a search on Google but I’ll definitely be coming back. – How can I believe in God when only last week I got my tongue caught in the roller of an electric typewriter? – Woody Allen Born 1935
Hi all!
Well all i can say is thank gd i am not alone, i have too long dents the top of my head and only noticed tehm a few months ago, but i to have been assured by many people that they have probally been there forever and because you get older and hair thins and i have also changed from parting my haod on the side which leaves the dents spot uncovfered. i have been told its normally and most times its happens through birth like forceit delivery, suction or just doct or nurses grabbing babbies head so i am just going to keep and eye on it i do not get headaces or pain from it and i did split my head open a few times when i was young around that spot
so unless it changed or aches i feel after reading everyone posts its actually quite normal
Hello all,
I just noticed my dents in the last 2-3 weeks. I called my Dr. and he did a blood test to check out my alkaline phosphatase level, this would indicate Paget’s disease…but it was fine. I have discovered more in the last week ,so I called him again, to schedule an appointment…he said I could see his nurse practitioner. As you can guess, I’m on the hunt for a new GP!
In one of the comments I noticed Sam said his dents itched – mine itch also. I also read where one man has constant ear ringing, I do as well. Also, someone else complained about sinus problems, especially on the same side of her head as the dents, also a symptom of mine. But, as of now, I have not had a problem with headaches.
This is troublesome, I can’t stop touching them, and I’m always looking for new ones. I’m very worried. I think I will take the advise offered in one of the comments and call my dermatoligist, maybe she will be helpful. I’m also going to google Scleroderma en coup de sabre as soon as I submit this comment.
I can’t believe how many people suffer from this. Hopefully, we are all suffering from a normal case of “settling”, you know, like an old house! Of course, I’m 63 years old, so I can say that easily, a poor attempt at a little touch of humor – believe me, I am not mocking anyone.
Take good care everyone. I hope we all get answers soon.
Joan is a possiablitly you have a diease called intracranical hypertension aks pseduotumor. Should probably look into it.
Hello again,
Forget searching Scleroderma en coup de sabre, it seems to be a condition limited to children…occurs in the first few years of life.
I have read with interst all of your comments, and I am amazed so many people are affected, with seemingly little medical explainations? Can anyone tell me if the know anything about skull lumps? an early post mentioned an itchy scalp – which i have – that led to the discovery of tumors. Under my itch the skull seems to be protruding in comparison to the opposite side.
Naturall I am concerned and will see GP next week, but any news from you all would be greatfully received
I had lumps on my skull that were from swollen glands (I didn’t know I had glands there) that were from a Lupus flare up. A strong dose of anti-inflammatory steroids took care of it quickly after it took months to get a doctor to figure it out even though they all knew I have Lupus.
I left some information on my step daughter a couple of months ago. In doing research I have found she has untreated Coronal Synostosis. The deterioration can stop or get worse over time. Most people have it repaired at a young age if detected. This can cause a dent on either side of the head up the hair line some extending down through the nose causing a deviated septum. Not everyone is going to look the same so looking at pictures may not help you. My daughter’s is very deep and runs from her hairline to the tip of her nose. I was only focusing on the dent and not the fact that the other side of her forehead is shaped slightly different due to the malformation on her left side. When she wakes or is tired it is more prominent. I am trying to figure out what else would be helpful but I only wish you all good luck. My stepdaugher feels ugly and it has had a drastic affect on her life. It breaks my heart and I cannot wait until she can try to have some plastic surgery to correct it. Take care and God’s speed!
so many people so little awnsers. Im 25 fem. i have had dents in my head for the past few months.. I was affected by alopecia arreata.. and went to a dermatologist and recieved a series of shots at my hair line where i was going bald.. a couple months went by my hair grew back but i had two major dents in my skull where the shots were given.. i thought maybe it was a side effect. i went back to the dermatologist about 6 months later when i started finding more blad spots. when i showed him the dents where the shots were given before he was dumb founded.. he said that its not normal and dents that size are usually caused by injury or birth defects.. we decided to test another area with shots.. he gave me less shots and a smaller area and told me to come back in 6 weeks.. 4 weeks later i can feel a new dent..where the shot was given. but i also have a new dent in my hair line that wasnt there before.. totalling 4 dents.. i do have what feels like sinus pressure in my forehead . the doctor said he did some research and nothing like this has been medically reported before.. but i saw scotts blog back in march 07 about his wife… sounds pretty similar.. feel free to contact me if your story is similar.. im pretty scared . kokopelli2332@aol.com
I have 3 dents in mine. A very deep one at the crown of my head which I have had for a very long time. I now have 2 new ones. One is at the side of my head and one on top. The one on top seems to keep getting worse and I have a lot of pressure from it. Sometimes I feel like I have been punched real hard, but pain lasts 30 sec or so but during that time vision sometimes is a bit blurry. Im hoping someone knows what is going on. I seen someone posted about ringing in ears. I always have a ringing, I know it sounds weird and I think it is…just need some anwsers.
I too have always had a strange shaped top of the head. I have like a small valley at the top of my head. I hear ringing in both ears, for longer than an hour sometimes. As well I will hear waterfalls trickling down a room, and I will be in my own room, hearing strange things… HELP! My mother is the one that brought this up to me. Because she too has this valley on the top of her head. Like the top of the parietal bone is not fused together properly. I am a nursing student and know that its prob abnormal, and in my case is a gene passed traite passed down from my mother.
I would like to also say that we are both (mother and I) intune with the supernatual, spiritworld, sensitive. I wonder if this has anything to do with it? I would love to know why this occurs to people?
Brandi,
I, too, have a large valley in the crown of my head and it’s been there since I can remember. It keeps getting deeper and more prominent. I have experienced some psychic abilities through dreams. Thought you may want to know!
i have a permanent dent in the front of my skull, and hair doesn’t grow from it, also, the skin looks like wax, its very bald an oddly smooth. my skull is also slightly deformed at the sides and those areas slightly project more than on other people. my head shapes like a cone rather than an egg or ball. how to reduce this appearance
I have two dents in my head exactly where I rest my glasses (where the nose grips are).
Omg! This is it! My wife was freaking out b/c she has 2 dents on her head. It wasn’t until I saw your note that we realized they were caused by her sunglasses. Thank you so much!
I am so glad I found this site… I have the same long dents running along the top of my skull towards the back. Thought I had a tumor or something! Keep the info coming!
if you’ve ever had steroid shots.. having dents is a side effect.. it dissolves the fat under the skin.. for some of you this might be it.. it generally goes under the name of kenalog.. if you look up the side effects .. they use the shot for everything from skin conditions to joint pain.. the only problem is that they don’t tell you that you might have dents after
Hello fellow dentheads. We all found this page by googling this condition. I am upset about this and pray that somebody will givce some official diagnoses.
M on 9/27/10/ I have had steroid shots and am now finding dents! I am going to try and get to the doctor to check out and let him see this for himself!
It is happening to me and I am surprised about this blog.
I don’t know how fast got to be this way because I just noticed
since I have a cold and was coughing and holding my head and noticed it then.
Numbing sensation also when touched.
hello everyone i am 23 years old i have never had steroid shots and have noticed humps in my skull. this was 4 years ago they are sensitive to the touch and they are deep i assumed they came from wearing pony tails 4 long periods of time, i cant believe so many are suffering from the same symptoms i do at least i dont feel alone (as i mold my indentations with my finger tips) :-
I am 22 years old and it’s been 3 or 4 years now..i noticed the dent…i know it hasn’t been there forever since i have shaved my head twice and it wasn’t there the first time. I agree that your skull probably adapts/changes as you grow, but i think there could be a better explanation…. i have been extremely stressed… have asthma and use my inhaler regularly….. I do get headaches..( not specific to the area..and once in awhile the area tingles. I have a very bad sinus too, which i think could be another possibility….(.the dent is at the top of my head… and if you feel the top of my head..it feels flat..it is very prominent)..i don’t really think it is a serious issue…but it does worry me sometimes..I have banged my head many times.( ie. the bottom of the swimming pool) .but i didn’t think you could bang your head hard enough for it to change shape.. . finding this info. helped..There isn’t much on the web regarding this issue…so Thank You!!! =) I do hope there is more of a diagnosis soon.( although i’m sure there are probably many different reasons…this could happen..).
Hi there fellow dent heads…ive had a small dent on my forehead for the last few months…i have just been told that i have underactive thyroid and wonder if maybe it has something to do with that..i dont have headaches and it doesnt hurt to touch it, it does worry me..but so many off us seem to have it that truly it cant be anything dangerous…
Found my dent about a week ago. Doctor sent me for a ct scan, awaiting results. She did tell me she sees it often and it is usally “normal”. I do have chronic headaches, kidney issues, hypothyroidism, and most recently osteoporosis. Can’t wait for the outcome of this.
Okay, I am going to take a stab at this. I came here too, because I have what I call “grooves” in the front of my scalp. I have had mine for years, I am in my early 40′s. For those of you adults who are only “groovy” no dents or bumps or with any other symptoms mentioned in these posts – I would like to put in my two cents on this. Now I am a massage practitioner and since I only read through posts up to the late summer of 2008, and am not sure if someone has already provided this thought, here goes…. Something I was unable to find in those posts was information regarding the soft tissue of the scalp. Between the skin and the skull is soft tissue. Now our scalp and face are covered in a layer of muscle along with a sinuous sheath and some other membranous tissue. First, go to Google (or whichever) and type in images for ‘muscles of the head and face’. Look at the patterns of the muscle tissue. Now there are areas where the pink or red tissue (muscle) connects to the white (sinuous or connective) tissue (which is not as pliable). Now, first consider if we do not hydrate there will be swelling before the sunken-ness of dehydration. Our bodies will try to store water and thus we have an apearance of full-ness. Consider too that if we do not eat a healthy diet and consume whole foods, we can experience several events of swelling off an on (which could cause some temporary discomfort). When looking at the patterns, notice the ‘V’ shape of the muscle pattern in the front of the head – is this what you think you feel? I beieve these are the ‘grooves’ I feel. Any place where the soft, thicker muscle tissue meets up with the sinuous tissue or a bony prominence (skull bones), there will be a change in the landscape – so to speak. The muscles tissue stops, the area sinks down and then rises up again where the next area of muscle or other soft tissue exists. In times of stress – or better the extreme of anxieties, we can experience a constant state of the ‘fight or flight’ syndrome. This will keep our muscles in the ‘tense’ state for prolonged periods of time. Which can cause them to seem more prominent – think of a constant flexed bicep muscle. So find a few minutes a day of your own to relax – close your eyes, rub your head, drink some water, have a snack and breathe. It is a start to relaxing those muscles. Now all this speculation is for adults – not children or as I mentioned above, not for people with symptoms – just for people who feel ‘grooves.’ So now you can research more such as how after the age of 30, adults lose approximately three to eight percent of their muscle mass every 10 years. Now think how much more prominent those lower areas between the muscles will feel. Which could explain why when we are younger and fuller, we do not notice the ‘grooves’ as much. A significant decrease in adipose (fat) tissue can also make these areas feel more prominent. Every single one of us will have variances in the muscle patterns of our head and face attributable to genetics, gender, culture, and various injuries that may have occurred previously. I believe it is a matter of coincidence that our glasses happen to fit into the groove pattern – however, I will not discount that explanation. I have anxieties, stress, hypothyroidism, have worn reading glasses for almost a year, and a daughter that is almost three. I believe stress could be the underlying cause. Which, if you are not eating a healthy diet, getting enough rest, or water, exercise, etc.,…can all compound the issue of prominence in these soft tissue areas. Now all this said, I will never dissuade anyone from the piece of mind in consulting with a physician/provider. One last note to consider, as adults aging, we start to find time to think of our overall state of health and we may worry and thus discover things about ourselves that we may have been having too much fun in our younger years to have noticed. So relax, consult your physician to ease your concern, and schedule a facial and scalp massage – if you get these regularly, you may notice a difference, maybe feel less ‘groovy’! Take care, and hope this was helpful.
thanx
I knew it must be an aging thing but didn’t understand it. Your info was wonderful and very informative. thanks so much
I really dont know if this will help anyone at all..but I guess I came on here trying to help myself but it seems like were all in the same boat with NO ANSWERS…Im 23 years old and have never really had any health issues at all..I recently noticed the indention in the back of my head toward the top, left side..about a couple inches long, not to deep but definitely an indent. Its also VERY itchy, especially at night. I have had a CT scan, a spinal tap, an MRI, and every blood test (thyroid, blood cell counts, vitamin levels, etc, etc) that all came back normal so I guess I really dont have any answers either BUT I can say that the indent came at the same time as a few other things that are going on so maybe someone else can relate to the other issues and find a relationship between the two.
The first thing is: Ive started having really bad neck and upper back pain so I went and had xrays done and I have a whiplash type injury to my neck which Im not sure how I got but it definitely hurts and is causing major headaches. I know the headaches are related to the neck/back pain bc when the pain eases the headaches also ease up. I also think this has cause some upper arm pain, jaw pain and eyesight issues, muscle weakness…I have no clue if this could have ANYTHING at all to do with the indentation but I heard that a pinched nerve may cause these..so Im wondering If maybe I have a pinched nerve (I guess thats just another test to add to my list)
The second thing is the fact that I just got back on the depo shot which causes bone loss…I was on it for 4 years before and I had to get off of it because I tested positive for Osteo-penia which is Pre-osteoporosis….I just had my first child 3 months ago and the doctor assured me that my body had time to recover from being on it before and that it would be fine for me to get back on it…since I took the first shot, I have had major complications with my period and so I am not staying on the depo and will not have the second shot. Not sure if this played into the indentation but as far as bone loss goes, it makes sense…but my calcium test came back normal so I know im not lacking on that.
The third thing is what someone had already mentioned: stressed/anxiety…I have always had high anxiety but ever since my back and neck pain started, I became so tired and weak that I got very depressed and stressed out…worried for my life. It was after that started that I noticed the indentation so Im wondering if the stress does have something to do with it?? I have been able to relax more now that I have had all the testing done but still worried.
If I had to make my best guess I would say it has something to do with my neck and back pain…maybe a pinched nerve causing this (although I dont know how that would be)…The spot is itchy like I said, sometimes I feel pain coming from it but more just an umcomfortable feeling rather than pain..especially if something is on it like my headset at work or if my hair is pulled up. Ive also noticed that my whole scalp is more itchy than usual (not just that spot but more that spot than anywhere else) and my scalp is also EXTRA sensitive…if I have my hair in a hair band, when I take it out, it is so sore. I know these are all so random..but maybe if someone else can relate to any of these other symptoms..we can figure something out!!!
Hi there….I too recently found a dent in my head, left side just back of the hairline. Then tonite as I was reading ALL of these “denty” stories, I found a narrower one on the right side. Have been having other “weird” symptoms, hot, cold, aching joints (feet, hands, elbows etc) & lots of aching in my shoulders & arms to the point of waking in the night with the pain. Really don’t want yet another problem that doctors cannot diagnose. I’ve been trying to find help with the achey thing (one doc just looked at me when my foot hurt & said I had gout). No tests, never touched me. That was in September. Saw him twice, then my regular doc twice and since that, yet another doc. No luck. Feel like crap a good majority of the time. In fact, gotta go to bed. I was surprised to find this site though & will check back soon to see if anyone comes up with anything. Be well fellow dentys!
From Nancy way back in 8/17/2007 re: wearing sunglasses on top of your head. Thank you!! I have the same indents in my scalp (not my skull), and was just wondering (and googling) if my sunglasses were causing it when I saw your post1 I wear my sunglasses on top of my head all the time to keep my hair back from my face and just realized the lenses fit perfectly where the indents are, so I’m going to keep them off my head and see if my scalp springs back. A lot of you with the same type parallel indentations in your scalp about one inch from your hairline; may be sunglasses if you wear them a lot.
Well like everyone on here I have the same dent right where my sunglasses sit noticed it about a year ago arnt we all weird!! Haha I have no other symptoms at all just the dints I realy do think it’s sunnies I have worn them on my head since about 2001 I never leave the house without them sunnies sunnies sunnies maybe the people with other symptoms are worrying about it too much causing hair loss ect.. Who knows just throwing it out there!!!
Ppl I’ve got tons of rare disorders n start w chiari then narcolepsy then meineres n vertigo n cataplexy they r related look it up.
Hi everyone,
I haven’t read through all of the comments, but searched the page for the word “laugh”, and didn’t find anything, which is why I’m going to share my own indentation problem.
My identical twin and I both have the same problem but have yet to find anyone else with it. We each have two indents equally spaced on the back of our skulls, in line with the middle of our ears and about an inch wide, a quarter of an inch high, and one on each side of the head.
The real problem is that after smiling for a long time or laughing too much (or sometimes in my case, just talking a lot), these indents grow really deep and become extremely painful to the point where we both grab at the backs of our heads and lay our hands over the indentations. Has anyone else experienced this before?
Thanks for any help at all! Never found an answer before and have never seen a doctor.
I have the same thing..this website looks very old…has anyone ever thought of hydration????? mine come and go all over my head…..we also have small muscle bands over our skull…just a thought
Hydration definitely seems to have an effect for me.
OK, I, too am happy to find this discussion. Not only do I have the two parallel dents on the top of my head, I have the “unicorn bump.”
I have a theory, that you should check out for yourself and see if it seems right. It may seem wacky, but….how much wackier than the fact that my skull has changed shape?
Try googlins “ascension symptoms” and that should get you started.
There are people who believe (and I have become one of them just in the last year, due to some pretty amazing experiences, synchronicities, etc.), that believe that human beings are evolving. I have only found one place that talks about bones changing, but there is a lot of info on physiological changes and changes in our DNA. One of the major signs is headaches (of which I am an expert). Another thing that they say is you feel sick but you’re not (like sometimes you feel like it’s the flu but not really). (I noticed many of you said you are otherwise perfectly healthy.) Trust your instincts, this is one of those things where you just need to use your intuition. But worth a shot, right? I’ll be really interested to see if anyone thinks this might apply to them.
googling, sorry :)
Hi all I am 59 , soon to be 60, and about 10 plus years ago I also noticed my “normal” skull, was Very Tender, as was my hair, AND a few times a year at least 3 , my skull softened and that was very Painful, but as days went by, my skull became hard as bone again, only , now I have Vertical Ridges around my head from front of skull near my eyes .. side to side, they are all equally distanced, and of equal lengths… I Had to have brain surgeries, and so I simply asked the surgeons, what gives with my funky vertically ridged skull? No reply, not even an I do not know from any of them, nor the other “specialists”… it was as if I were talking to the room walls. There is something going on, and I think we are test subjects of genetic mutations.. I never got all my childhood shots, I Screamed the needles had poison in them to kill me. So Momma never made me take the shots ever again, and I was a child who was Not afraid of getting vaccinated, until that day. and now it is like I have some sort of later-developing alien skull, and it ? (mutates?) from very tenderly soft until it becomes boney hard again, like a lobster , gets’ its’ newer soft shell, and then in time that shell hardens. Something is Definately Wrong, because Every time I have asked for another surgery, ( hysterectomy), all I get is…We will look and see what is happening to you ,but only for reasons of updates on your condition. That is Not Good to hear from Every doctor, and when I asked about my then hemmoraging, they replied , we will keep an eye on it, and study it , from time to time. Now I still have my monthly Daily… since 32 years of age, and all they will offer me at age 59… lol… is we will study it, and look at it, but no surgeries, to remove the grape-cluster cysts, nor your female organs.
Glad I found this site… as far as I can think.. it must be some sort of vaccinations with genetic DNA , …. and we are test subjects, like lab rats!!
just took my 7 year old daughter to the doctor for 2 large bumps she has on the sides of her head. Within the last month they have grown larger. My doctor ordered a CT scan, because he thinks her skull maybe growing to fast. If anyone has any information on this it would be greatly appericated. Thanks
Lipodystrophy check it out
i have a dent, soft spot, in the middle of my head just below my crown. showed it to my neurologist and he’s waiting on lab work. there is a possibility that it could be bone cancer. said it was not paget’s disease or a couple of other long named things. i am very panicky and scared…
my husband has had a lumpy skull with grooves for many years .
he is now 67 and has vascular dementia. i am wondering if this was an early indication.
Do all of you wear sunglasses/glasses on the top of your head when they’re not on your face? I do and I have those dents.
So ive read all the blogs and looked up stuff on the brain. Im 34 and had an itchy scalp- as i massaged some conditioner in my head i noticed a ridge between the frontal and pareital bones.
So turns out I think many of you are right! Between aging and the sutures changing, the muscles, dehydration & stress, and yes wearing sunglasses on your head all seem to be plausible answers. I really dont think we’re dealing with diseases- assuming its just the one right on top of your head.
I do expeience ringing in the ears (tinutus), but that is inner ear and potentially sinus related. I agree on the masuses suggestion about scalp massages- theres nothing quite like it to relax.
I do feel better that you all wrote so I could compare my thinking!
I like the idea that finally at age 47 I am a groovy person and have many denthead friends. This site has been helpful and I really appreciate all the input, I was told by an RN that my parallel dents are caused by dehydration. Here is another taught to ponder if indeed it is caused by dehydration, and I know this is not the best news for us coffee drinkers but caffeine , the wonderful pick me up could actually be the culprit , I started coffee late in life and now i’m hooked, if I find the strength to stop this wonderful habit I will report back with my findings. I wish everyone a very blessed, peace filled Christmas.
