Indentations in my skull
Recently, in the past year or two, I noticed some indentations in my skull that show up occasionally. I’ve yet to find any information about them on Google or the like (Web MD, etc), so I’m hoping by posting here, perhaps Google will pick it up and someone else with the same situation may have an idea.
The dents are symmetrical, mirrored across the left and right halves. They’re about 5cm long and 1.5cm wide — sometimes larger in both dimensions. I only noticed them because of a nervous tendency to mess with my hair. They’re not there all the time. I’ve only noticed them late at night — tonight is the earliest, being only around 10:30PM.
Since I can’t predict when they’ll be there, I can’t see myself going to a doctor to explain all of this, wasting money and time on something he wouldn’t be able to witness. Plus, it’s not associated with any pain or dizzyness or anything like that — perhaps only tiredness, but that’s probably due to the hour more than the dent. It could be nothing, but nobody I have spoken to about it has found it familiar. It’s a mystery.
It could be that some of you may be suffering from a form of Scleroderma known as “Linear En Coup de Sabre”. It may be necessary for a biopsy to rule out this disease. Those of you who have had this since childhood may indicate that you had the disease as a child and it has done it’s damage. If the skin feels hardened or is discolored or you have headaches, I urge you to get it checked out, because there are some treatments available that are promising and work. If you have had siezures, it may indicate the disease as well.
For those of you who have noticed changes recently, get it checked out. It’s always better to know what your up against so you can fight it. If your doctor says he don’t know what it is, look on line and find a doctor who knows what he’s talking about.and specializes in these things.
Best wishes to all of you.
Joel, do you have a form of scleroderma, I was wondering because my daughter does. Thanks

Wow, what a lot of dents and stuff going on. I was just sitting down watching a movie and rubbed the center of my head along the crown and found that I can feel the sutures running from my forehead all the way to the base of my skull. It was certainly weird enough for me to get online and see if it’s normal. I guess it is. I then found that I can feel almost every ridge between each plate. I remembered that I don’t wear hats for very long because they make my head hurt intensely after awhile. Anything on my head hurts, when I was in the Army the helmet would hurt so bad I had to use mind-over-matter to get through the day. I wear glasses and they hurt the sides of my head. Weird. Thank you everyone for all the posts, it’s interesting and I hope it isn’t some new unheard of ‘disease’ that we just started making known.
http://www.starchildproject.com/NatlGeoResponse.html#Optic Hi. This website shows that there is a three line cranial division in a normal human skull. What I find interesting is that most posts here indicate that the indentations occur in the front of the forehead. ..like mine does. I was told by my Mom that when I was a kid, I was told to take a nap and I didn’t like doing that. I recall lying on my bed for my nap, putting my feet on the window (being 2 – 3 years old, didn’t realize what breaking glass meant) and I recall kicking outward in anger. My Mom told me that a large glass shard stuck into my forehead and as she investigated the breaking glass, came into my room to find me under the bed with blood streaming out from under the bed. All I remember is the anger and pushing my feet into the window. Well, I have had an indent running from the top center of my hairline, through the center of my forehead, leading down to almost between my eyebrows. I’ve had this forever as long as I can remember. Since reading these posts, tho, I have since felt for other indents and find that I have one more…one leading from the very top of my head, connecting to the indent that I’ve had since childhood. Hmmm…
I’m glad I was able to look at the scientific website that refers to the separation of the cranium. Otherwise, I’d be worrying about more than one indent… please check it out…logical reasons always help diminish my fears. Here’s the page again… http://www.starchildproject.com/NatlGeoResponse.html#Optic Best wishes always. Cindy
I am a 21 year old F, in my last year of college majoring in nursing. Beginning of this year I’ve noticed a change in the shape of my forehead. It is an indentation directly in the middle of my forehead, and its about an inch wide or so, and another smaller dent right on the side of it. I’ve noticed, as well as others, that the indentations appear to be bruised. No pain involved with touch, but I’ve had frequent headaches (feels like sinus pressure)-associated with school/exams/stress- people notice it more than I even think about it, and it has been distressing because my face is my appearance. I’ve been to 3 doctors, one xray of the skull with normal results, and several trials of sinus meds, antibiotics, analgesics….one doc suggested that migraine headaches often show up as sinus pressure symptoms, but couldn’t explain the mild discoloration and indentations. She suggested I get an MRI/CT of sinus cavity – which I did not, too expensive. I have just learned to just deal with my appearance, and i might just cut some bangs. If there was /someone that had an eitiolgy for these dents we all have in common, SOMEONE would have gotten a result or diagnosis.
Hi everyone,
I’m 18 years old, turning 19 in a few months. I have a large indentation in the back of my skull (roughly where the parietal bone meets the occipital bone). In addition, the back of my head is very flat.
My head was definitely shaped like this by the time I was 13, but not as pronounced as it has gotten over the last few years. It’s odd, because I know for certain that my head was round at least up until I was 9. Pictures prove it.
I have two brothers and their heads are perfectly round. Both of my parents’ heads are perfectly round. All of my grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles have round heads. I can come up with no answer for why I have a flat and indented skull. It doesn’t seem to be genetic because NO ONE in my family has a skull like mine.
It’s pronounced enough that when I shaved my head for a performance of A Few Good Men, everyone in the cast noticed (and one boy with NO tact at ALL insisted on “caressing Avery’s dent” nearly every day).
To make things more frustrating, I’ve been thinking about this problem for years. I told my mother about it a while ago and she told me I was being silly because “everyone is different.” Honestly, that’s bull. I’ve spent the last few years observing the shapes of people’s heads to confirm my idea that most heads are round. It has been confirmed. I have NEVER seen anyone with a head like mine. Does anyone know what can cause this? (I also plan on seeing a doctor in a few months and I’ll repost once I do).
I forgot to mention that the site of the dent is often sore or tender, like most of the above instances.
I sure find it very mysterious that NO doctor all over this earth can explain why people are getting these 2-3 vertical indentations on there forehead in the same spot all of a sudden. Everyone has googled and searched for an answer and WE (I have the same 2 vertcal lines on my forehead) still have not found a GOOD answer. My 2 indentations, which makes it seem like I have a lump on forehead, are sometimes sore as well. And ive also noticed that me eye sight seems to have problems along with headaches. This is very weird because you cant find any history about this problem and it seems like it just started happening in the past several years. I guess my main question/ or fear would be, how can pieces of your forehead(bone) just dissapear? Thanks for sharing everyone. At least we know were in it together.
I read a few of these posts and thought I would give some input. First of all let me wish hol good luck in nursing school, I just finished in May and received my license as an RN in June. When my daughter was around 2 we noticed she had a line that went from her hair line down her forehead and along the left side of her nose that was slightly off colored kinda like a bruise. It would turn really bright red/purple when she cried, was sick or really tired. By the time she was 4 the discolored line had became an indention that included her eyebrow which she had almost lost all of the hair and the features (eye, nose, and mouth) on that side were smaller than the right. Every time we had asked a Dr. they said it was just a birth mark. When I noticed the asymetry of her face and the lack of the eyebrow hair I took her to the Dr. again. This time I was lucky and the Dr. had recently graduated so he remembered something that sounded very similar. He said he was almost positive she had Scleroderma en coup de sabre and she would need to see a Pediatric Rheumatologist for an acurate diagnosis. Luckily one of the few pediatric specialist who specialized in Scleroderma happened to be in the same practice. We returned 2 wks later and as soon as he walked in the office and took one look at her he confirmed the diagnosis. Within the following 6-12 months she developed a second line that is at an angle from around the middle of the left eyebrow and slanted out to the side of her head sort of forming an angled V. She took methotrexate once a wk for approx 3yrs until she began to vomit immediately following taking them. At this point there is really nothing else we can do but see how things turn out for her. The involved side will never be “normal” it simply did not develop at the same rate and will never catch up.
The really strange thing is that last week I noticed a line over my right eye that extends from the hair line to the top inside corner of my right eye. Mine is not exactly straight it sortof curves further in about half way down. I have had right sided headaches off and on for 1-2 years about 1 a wk sometimes lasting 2-3 days at a time, lots of sinus problems especially on the right side and over the past year or so I noticed that my right eye seems to be “closing’. I thought I just had a lazy eyelid because it just started sort of drooping it now covers over part of the pupil all the time and if I smile it completely closes. I also had a very hard time getting contacts that worked for my right eye this year because it just seems blurry no matter what I try. The Optometrist said he thought it was due to dry eye. I think I may have the same thing as my daughter but I am not sure. I will be seeing a specialist as soon as I can get time off from work. I suggest anyone with these “dents and lines” don’t even bother with a regular Dr. go to either a Dermatologist or a Rheumatologist preferably one who has some experience in diagnosing scleroderma. My primary care Dr. did not even bother to look at me and had no idea what type of testing you do for scleroderma. Good luck to all and I hope we all find answers.
Really Scary stuff.
I noticed I had a small indentation a few years back and thought nothing of it. But now it runs all the way from the top of my head down to the temple – exactly follwing the coronal suture line on the right side of my head. For a year or two I ignored it but now the flesh in the surrounding skin is wasting away and if i press the edges of the indentation I can feel a crunching within the flesh. I went to see my GP who didnt have a clue and told me everything would be fine. Im scared that in another year or two half of the flesh on the right side of my head will have wasted away. Every now and then I get this tingle across my brain – almost like it is being pickled.
I do not know what to do, the paranoia is horrible
John S, what you are feeling is not normal. You need to get a second opinion. Get a scalp xray followed an MRI and a CT scan. I, like many of you, have an indentation on my right frontal scalp. I asked a friend of mine about it, he is a doctor. I told him I didn’t have it there before. He said that I should have it checked out as soon as possible since it is not normal. He was very honest with me. He said that there is a type of bone cancer that starts off with the indentations. I need the xrays and lab work done asap. Please, follow up with your doctor. I am.
Hi everyone,
My husband also has a dent in his scull that just started. He NEVER wears sunglasses on his head. I dont know for sure but I wonder, we have been to chiropractors in the past that adjusted the plates in the skull. They really moved. So since they are movable, I wonder if this new dent is just a manifestation of a misalignment of the spine. And that perhaps the additional pressure put on the area of misalignment is interfering with blood/nerve supply to the area? Any comments? Has anyone tried a chiropractor?
Hi,
I have been noticing also, probably over the past month a dent in my forehead, which is noticeable as a dark shadow. I am not aware of whether this changes during the day as I rarely get to look in a mirror. Recently going for a scan I was made aware of how dehydrated my body was. I had previously also been having lots of headaches (also connected to dehydration and overuse of the computer and surprising deterioration in eye sight, needing specs updating). As I’m in my forties and going through menopause, I am further dehydrated because of hot flushes and not sleeping well. I have come to the conclusion that since I have not lost weight, am not on any drugs that dehydration is the most likely cause and despite my awareness of it, I still rarely have a drink. I am also very busy and frequently under a lot of stress, hence not looking after my own welfare and not drinking enough. Once I am able to improve the quantity I drink which should be at least 8 glasses a day, then I will report back if there is any improvement. After updating my specs and not using the computer before bedtime, headaches went and sleep improved a little.

I also have a dent in the centre of the parietal bone towards the back of my skull. It is very sensetive an can be sore at times also. and sometimes the skin looks red ik that area. I also have numerous other lumps and bumps but this one is the most noticable and I have noticed that it seems to be getting bigger as I get older. Also, the way that my hair sits on my head in that area is looking different and stick out at a funny angle.
I am a 32 year old female and too have noticed in the past 2 years deep indentations on my skull. The longest one is about 4 inches on the top of my head (if I place my index finger in it it is about half as deep as the width of my finger, if that makes sense!). I have 4 kids (these were definitely not there before the kids.) I have also had stress induced hair loss for the past 3 years that will not go away but I am thinking it may have something to do with this. My scalp is also red in and around the area of the indentations. My doctor immediately gave me a ton of blood tests and xrays, all which came back fine. She then referred me to a dermatologist. Who also thought it to be abnormal especially with the redening. They think that my scalp is for some reason swollen or retaining water in some areas making the area around what would be normal levels on my head raised so it feels like indentations. These “dents” also get tender sometimes. They took a deep tissue sample from the middle of one of the areas (had to get 3 stitches-ow!) and now I have a scar but that too didnt show anything but Telogen Effluvium (a stress induced hair loss). They asked for more bloodwork and sent me to a third dermatologist that specializes in hard cases as well as womens hairloss. I have been getting injections of steroids in my scalp mostly to try and stop my hair from shedding but the steroid is suppose to stop inflamation. So, if my “dents” in my scalp were from inflamation and water retention you think it would have gotten better but they have only gotten a little deeper. This specialist (now a year after seeing her) wants to run more bloodwork and take another deep tissue sample from a different area of my head. I do not want to do the tissue sample only to get another sensitive scar my scalp and no answers. I have googled this subject many times & this is the first time I have seen anything. I am thinking it may not be anything serious- just weird! I have browsed over most of the entries on here and what I have seen is no one has anything come back from there doctor as a genuine cause or concern. I would definitely appreciate anyone who’s doctor has figured something out. It would be nice to not have to pay for these ongoing doctor bills not to mention the mistery aspect! I think its probably not more thaan a coincidence that most of the entries on here are by women- I am wondering if it could be a hormonal thing- who knows!
I woke up this morning after a long weekend in front of the computer completing school projects and found one of these mentioned vertical dents that looks like a faint bruise at the right center of my forehead. It is softer to the touch than the left side of my forehead and it’s size is approximately .5″ x 1.5″. It was not there yesterday, I don’t believe. I am 38yrs old. I am glad for all of these posts, yet it seems strange no one has a conclusive answer to this. I don’t get headaches generally. It’s too early to give any symptoms, I suppose.
I recently saw my doctor about the deformity in back of my skull. Here is what he had to say:
The flatness in the back of my skull is within normal variation, as is the dent. However, you do not usually see the two together. The fact that I have both makes each feature more pronounced than it would be without the other. He said though it was unusual it was not abnormal.
What he said was abnormal, however, is a bulge I have below the dent and the flat surface which raises the angle of the flat surface, making it stand out more. It also emphasizes the dent. He referred me to a neurosurgeon who will take a look at the bulge and try to figure out if it’s anything to be concerned about. My physician does not believe that it is anything serious, but it is abnormal. I’ll write again once I see the neurosurgeon.
One more to join the crowd! I am 73 and have an indentation from my left eyebrow to my scalp line–just one. If it was from glasses, wouldn’t there be two? My doctor said that he has never seen anything like it. So I am scheduled for X-rays next week. Luckily, although I had migraines for 25 years, I don’t have any symptoms now. I feel for some of you, especially the younger ones. This is a real mystery. Is there any such thing as a “Skull Specialist”?? Don’t forget us if you learn anything, please. I will let you know if the X-ray shows anything, which I doubt. Thanks for being there so we are not alone.
Avery, I am curiously looking for the answer about those dents.
I have had those dents for about 6 months now. Somewhere I read that these are due to dehydration. I drank lots of water for a while and suprisingly my dents got smaller. But I started to get headaches due to overhydration. The pressure inside my head increase due to over-drinking. Thats not healthy..
Looking forward to your visit to neurosurgeon
Happy New Year
I’ve only scanned over these messages but the majority appear to consist of indentations around the parietal (posterior to hairline) and occipital bones, rather than the frontal bone.
I have recently found a long vertical ‘canal’ running from my hairline, down to my right eye. I first thought it was a retained metopic suture, which usually fuses completely by around 2 years of age, but some adults can retain an unfused one throughout life. However, the metopic suture runs from the centre line of the frontal bone down to the tip of nasal bone and my one is too off-centre to be this.
I also used to suffer from migraines (not so much now) and have a lot of sinus problems so it could be one of the sinus channels, but I think these run along the sagittal suture (correct me if I’m wrong).
I have also been very stressed with my degree (studying bones, funnily enough!) lately so hopefully this is just the cause but if anyone else has similar indentations and a diagnosis, I would be most grateful to find out what it is. I may go the doctors to get it checked out. I felt a bit silly going, but after reading all these comments, I think ‘better safe than sorry’.
Best of luck to you all.
I’m glad I found this website. My ex boyfriend took my head and banged the back of it into the wall so had he gave me a minor concussion. It has been 4 days later and I woke up and noticed I have a red line indention across the front of my forehead. It is very sore and hurts to touch. I am making a doctors appointment asap. I believe this to be related to what he did. But, he banged the back of my head so I dontknow why this is on my forehead?
I’m SO glad to have found this website and to find the answer for the cause of the recent dents in my head. Mine are definitely from wearing glasses on the top of my head. For the past year or so I’ve tended to wear my regular glasses on top of my head while I’m doing things around the house, putting them on only when I watch TV or go out. These dents seem to have gradually appeared over the last six or eight months and really had me worried! The nose pads on the glasses fit perfectly into the two symmetrical indentations about an inch back from my hairline… and yes, they are deeper in the evening than in the morning. Thank you fellow dent-heads for the answer to my mystery! (This brings new meaning to the old expression “getting soft in the head”.) I turned 60 this year and it seems everything’s going soft on me! For those of you whose dents aren’t due to glasses, I wish you good luck in finding the cause and good health!
Hi everyone,
I live in the UK and am 21 years old. Really happy to find this website as I have been going out of my mind about these dents I have had since I can remember. It didn’t really trouble me until my hair was thinning rapidly.
My dent is on the top of my head and sort of goes in a “u” shape. Been to hair loss clinics and spent over £1000 on creams and pills, this has had no result. The dent is quite deep and getting more concerned about it as time goes on.
It is getting embarresing going to the hair dressers as all I can think about is my dent and bald spot (no baldness in the family)
CAN ANYONE HELP??
Many Thanks
PS the exact location of the phantom dent is on the softspot, near to the crown
Neil It sounds like the same thing my daughter has Look up localized scleroderma or morphea, I hope you find an answer.
I believe honestly I have thought alot about this……because i have same issues, and noticing that most are women and I honestly believe it’s from wearing sunglasses on your head, I have been for the past 3 months when i started noticing the first bump, but my tongue ring when put back in after not having it in for so makes indentions quick on hard surface, so seriously take in consideration that the answer icould be a very simple one , because I was honestly scared and worried, but SUNGLASSES, it does fit the nose part of glasses very perfectly and especially for those that the indentions come and go,,,,,and mostly women wear sunglasses on their head. And through 5 years of this website, no real conclusion, keep it simple.
Well, I have the report from the doctor; and like most of you, the skull X-ray showed nothing. My next plan is to ask my hair dresser if he knows anything. I bet he does!! Will let you know at the end of the month when I have my hair done. Sorry that I haven’t any better info for you all.
Hey I thought I would post, I think it is safe to say it is not from wearing sun glasses, As I never in my life have worn sunglasses on my head
And it is not gender related, because there are both many male and females experiencing these bumps
I find that most people posting have bumps in similair places
I also have these indentations and bumps etc, mine are not painfull, and I did have head aches a lot as a child, and still ocasionally get them, but that may or may not be completely un related.
I am male and I am 18, It seems that everyone getting these mysterious dents and or bumps varies widely in age.
most people aren’t experincing severe pain, or anythign that effects there quality of life
My doctor told me mine were just normal, and that was all, but i foudn more after she told me that
The best explenation i’ve read so far i believe is the one that said it is problem from bumping our heads in our past and our skull just growing into it. This might also explain why we are experiencing them in similair places, Perhaps those spots have a high chance of being bumbed without noticing, Like bumping the left side of yoru ehad while getting out of the car or something like that,.
I would also assume it isn’t harmful because everyoen that has posted, hasn’t been severly ill, So i don’t think it should cause to much worry.
But I am with you all, I am curious as to what it is, maybe we’ll never know?
my son fell from our bed the other night. when i got home,,i noticed a lump on his head when i touched it’s indented. i was so worried so the next day i went to the hospital to have him check. his pediatrician said he needs an x-ray… we waited for a while and the radiologist said that there might be a suspected fracture on his skull.. but we have to wait the next day to find out the official result..
i will keep you posted.
I am so relieved to find this site. I googled “head dent”, feeling completely ridiculous doing so, but I’ve been terrified that there might be a crack in my scull because there is a flat dent in the front left side of my scull, near where I hit it very hard on a shelf a month ago, and what feels like a ridge down the middle of my forehead from the hairline. My whole scalp is very tender, even if I carefully comb my hair it feels like the injury just happened. I didn’t have symptoms of a concussion though and when I talked to my physician, she said that that was the thickest part of the scull, and I wouldn’t have actually cracked or dented it without having very serious symptoms. She diagnosed it as being “hypersensitive” – does that sound right? Everyone else seems confused about it and asks if my scull felt different before the injury and I honestly don’t know; I never paid attention, it’s just I can’t stop being paranoid and noticing now. My mom thinks the scull might be bruised, which could take months to heal, and I guess that might explain some of the denting….
Anyway it’s a comfort to know you’re not alone even if there aren’t any answers.
I have a couple of dents in my forehead and also on the top back of my head. I started searching online for answers and found a site where people said they had dents at the injection site of a drug called Kenalog. I looked it up and this is the same drug in the nasal spray I am using for allergies. It is called Triamcinolone. Are any of you using this? I noticed the dents about 4 mos ago and have been using the drug for about 6 mos. I am gong to stop using the drug and see if the dents go away.
why is everyone so happy about this site? Just a bunch of people with the same unanswered question
I just have one large dent on the right side of my head but ive had it as long as I can remember. My concern is the lump on the top of my head in the back by my cowlic. The spot in the middle of colwlick is soft and the top of my skull is cone shaped while the back of my head is flat. Ive had migraines and vision problems and theyve even done a cat scan a couple years ago and told me it camw back normal. I also have areas of my scalp that are white pink and a greenish color. I also have seizures, body itches, sinus infection after sinus infection, vision changes, sometimes i see stars for no reason, mood swings, memory problems, i get irritiable at the drop of a hat, cant focus lack of concentration, sore spots all over my head which change all the time and a weird blue dot on the right side of my head. lol
Does anyone know how to make a mold of your head to see for sure if ur head is changing shape?
CHECK OUT NEUROCRANIAL RESTRUCTURING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MIGHT BE OUR ANSWER
I too have two indentations, on either side of center, about 2″ wide, running straight back from my hairline to about 5″ into the top of my skull. I wear reading glasses daily for 2 years now on top of my head. Sometimes I have 2 pair of reading plus sunglasses up there! While wearing my glasses, I hit the top of my head while closing an SUV back door in July 08 and slammed the glasses into my the top of my skull. There was no scalp breakage, but that’s when I found these ridges, and thought I had just created them. However, we are seven months later, and they are still here, the one on the right being deeper than before.
I asked my doctor back in November and he said it can take a long time for this to return to normal after a blow, but I think this has been too long and it’s getting worse. I don’t believe this started the day of the head bang, but rather the bang led me to find them.
I know I did not have these two years ago as I shaved my hair to 1″ and would have noticed them. I am 53 and female.
I wonder if this could this be an indicator of another issue. I am writing a couple of doctors about this and will send the link to this site.
I have a large indention that is on the top of my head towards the bck. The dent is very distinct and large. I noticed it probably about a year ago ( I am 33 now) but didnt have any kind of pain or tenderness at all until about October of this year when I started getting a “pressure like” feeling and a burning feeling where the dent is. I was finally able to go to the doctor in January. When he felt of it he acted like it was no big deal and said that all heads are “lumpy”. He did go ahead and send me for a CT scan just to be sure. The results all came back normal. He said that my headaches were being caused by the muscles in my neck and shoulder area were very tense and tight. The muscles from your neck do go all the way up the back of your head and to the forehead region. He said that the strain that is in my neck is going up the back of my of head and that is the source of my pain. It is mainly due to poor posture and neck muscles that arent strong enough to support my “slumping over”. Since then I have been to physical therapy and also massage therapy and they have both been working to ease the pressure/burning feeling in my head. Now that that is all squared away…it still doesnt explain how the dent got there in the first place. I have another appt to go back next week to address this. I dont really know how much farther to take this…it could be nothing or it could be something very serious. I am being told that the CT scan would have picked up any kind of bone cancer in my skull if it was present…is this right? When I go back, what other tests should I ask for?
Are any of you using Nasocort or any other nasal spray with triamcinolone in it? It seems like my dents came after I started using it. Please let me know.
I am a Chiropractor of 35 years experience. i have developed a treatment protocol for correcting the misalignment’s in the skull. It is called C.A.T.S. I have taught over 700 Chiropractors to do this.
One of my studnts sent me your story.
Part of the training in C.A.T.S. is to correct indents like you mentioned. I see you have been searching for answers since 2005. I just may be able to help.

I have also found some ridges on my scalp just two weeks ago. I am going to the dr tomorrow. At first I blew it off. Then I became concerned and read every blog on this sight. I started to think maybe the sunglasses theory could be the answer for me. However, I use hot rollers in my hair several times a week and that does not cause any ridges on may scalp. (by the way, the ridges are not on any of the spots I put the roller pins.) With hot rollers not only is it pushed tight against your scalp, but it is also very hot on the scalp. Because of this, I don’t buy the sunglasses theory. I found another web sight where people described the same thing as us but are calling it head dents. Anyway one of the bloggers mentioned Meningiomas. I looked it up and think some of my other symptoms (such as headaches, difficulty finding the right word, minor dizziness) make this a valid possibility. Anyone reading this, just look it up. You may have other symptoms that are minor and don’t connect the two. Hopefully, this is not the case for any of you, but so many are looking for answers (like myself).
I’ve had two indentations, one on each side of my head, over my ears, for quite as long as I can remember. About an inch “wide” and a couple inches “long”, and probably 1/4″ deep. I notice them more lately because my glasses, if they are too tight, seem to bother the area and cause me discomfort, I’m a 42 yr old healthy female.
I was talking to my mom, and she told me that I was a “forceps” delivery. The indents sure feel like two grooves that would be made by a pair of foceps on my skull. So, while I don’t know for sure if that’s where they come from, I think it makes sense.
Well, I went to the doctor and he said something similar to other doctor comments…the dents are the sutures of my scull. He said it’s normal for it to be more pronounced at times and then not at other times. Can not remember why and will do a search on that later on. Also, I have had memory issues since I was in my early 20′s…now I’m 42. He said that has been going on too long to relate it to any of these new symptoms. Basically, he said some people develope memory problems for unknown reasons. He says I’m fine and I’m going to go with that for now. Also, for those who talk about a dent that is a recent developement on their forehead (not on the scalp) look up scleroderma. See if any of the other symptoms apply to you. Good luck to everyone. I will continue to read the post from time to time to see if anything new developes.
Hi all. I guess I’ll share my story:
I’m 28 years old (m), a couple of months ago, I noticed a tapered ridge protruding from the center of my forehead (v-shaped), going from above the hairline down to just above the space in between my eyebrows. I shave my head roughly once a week, so I am certain that this ridge was not there previously. Then I noticed two linear dents running parallel from above each eyebrow, up to my hairline and back to the back of my head. It kinda looks like 2 portions of my forehead inbetween the ridge, have recessed back, causing the dents and the resulting protrusion. I was completely freaked out about it, i thought I was growing horns or turning into an alien or something. I have had no other symptoms whatsoever. The only thing I can attribute it to was a very stressful period of time in the few months leading up to when I noticed it.
I have not saught medical advise, as the symptoms are purely asthetic, and the dents/ridge are completely symetrical. Although, I would like to think the symptoms will dissapper, as they are noticable, and make my forehead look kinda wierd.
I hope we can all get an explaination/cure soon!
Dave.
Hey everyone.
I’m very happy that I found this site. I’m 20 years old. When I was 9 years old I was diagnosed with linear morphia. I have a dent all the way from the middle of my skull to my top lip. Until recently, the only problems I have had from it are cosmetic. Recently, I have had severe pain, especially on the middle of my scalp(where it starts) and the right side of my forehead. It is unbearable! I have talked to my dermatologist about it, but it is very frustrating because it seems like not even she knows much about it. I know there are treatments out there like light therapy and immune suppressing medications, but they can be life threatening! I don’t even know what the cause is.There has got to be someone out there who knows more! I am desperately seeking any answers! My email is seppy72488@yahoo.com
i have two dents in the sides of my head and one in the top middle of my head, I don’t know if I always had them I just noticed three years ago, I don’t feel any pain but I’m just curious to know what’s the cause of this problem
Well, like everyone else here, my head or skull seems to be abnormal. I’m 20 and have an indentation towards the very back top of my skull. I also have these weird lumps and smaller dents on the back of my skull. I have no Idea if this is the result of some head trauma I’ve suffered some time ago. The back left of my skull protrudes farther out than the right side. It makes me pretty self conscious and I find myself messing with it constantly. I guess it’s been this way for a couple years now. Whenever I’m sitting around running my fingers around my head I daydream of taking a sander to my skull and smoothing it out, it drives me crazy.
I have a line/crease that runs from about 1 inch above my right eyebrow to my crown and when i have been sleeping on my right side it is bright red and unmissible.I have had this all my life but could only see the bit on my face to hairline, but when my hair started to recede i then saw the full size of it.I went to see my doctor many years ago and he said it was nothing to worry about as just the way the muscle is resting,ok for him to say don’t worry though as he aint the 1 waking up with a big red crease running down side of his head.I wonder if any medical people actually know what it is let alone how to get rid of it,anyway i live in hope.
I have a large indent on the right side of my skull that mostly follows the coronal suture, but I have researched and I am of normal health and I’m pretty positive it is not due to craniosynostatis, or whatever it’s called. There is no reason it should be there. I have suffered no trauma to the head. I remember it for as long as I’ve lived… I know you guys might think the whole alien thing is crazy but uuuhh… do you really trust doctors? I mean since I was two I got really sick and had to fix MYSELF because the doctors (I’m speaking of western medicine) are just plan dumbasses. I’m sorry, but they take your money, they give you drugs, and they LIVE off of your PAIN. I’m sure there are some good doctors out there but the industry is tainted and they only tried to make me more sick. I cured myself of what they told me was incurable. Don’t believe what they say. You know 1 out of 100 babies in the hospitals are given out to the wrong parents? I can’t really prove that to you but it is seriously that unlikely?… really people, i think you need to wake up and stop trusting someone who makes more money when they prescribe you medicine than when they don’t. Read the book ‘The Estrogen Alternative’ – BIRTH CONTROL IS EXPERIMENTAL, and actually CAUSES tumors and things like endometriosis…….. I KNOW.
It’s coming 2012 here and if you’ve cared to read anything into actual history you’ll see that the ancient sumerians and people from prehispanic mexico (check out the olmecs), and even things in the BIBLE state alien encounters. You must be very arrogant to think that out of the entire universe we are the only people that exist to the ‘highest’ intelligence. Do you read anything on metaphysics, quantum physics, physics at all? science? astronomy? Check out the book ‘stalking the wild pendulum’ by Ishtak Bentov. The internet and TV can lie to you and you will have no way of knowing. If you seek some truth, go to a library…
and as for these bumps in my head, I’ve had a trippy life and this whole 2012 thing is a little involved with me and my close tribe of people. Doesn’t seem to damn farfetched to say some people have been abducted. Read about the serpent race that Africans talk about abducting their people to do experiments… I wish I knew how to spell the name properly but it sounds like Chitouri.
When I mess with the indent in my head (and it’s upsetting how big it is, although covered up well by my hair) it starts to hurt almost immediately. I get headaches sometimes and I can tell it’s coming from that very spot.
I’ve read up on two mutations in homosapiens, one occuring specifically around the time of ancient sumeria, that is associated with the brain getting bigger as one gets smarter. 70 percent of people have one mutation, and 30 have the more interesting one called the spindle-mutation, the name similar to a description of a double helix. These mutations make a person able to contain more information, be less emotionally messy so that they can be smart about things. Yeah, like be less tied to a doctor when they tell you that you have this long to live, or this disease, with this medication, or perhaps that everything is normal but just to be safe come back for a checkup… There’s nothing that you can’t find out yourself, and spend less money and learn more things while you’re at it. Seriously, as a human race we’re strangely evolved faster than we should be but that means we’re also ahead of ourselves. We have much much more to discover in western medicine that people in China or Thailand figured out years ago. We have much much more to discover about the universe, why do we think we know so much already?
and PS, chuck… from that post way up there… I’m interested about the ringing in the ears/quantum physics… sort of…. from what I already know I can argue. I can say you’re onto something, but also that I think you’re missing most of the point. And what you said about the whole if it’s on this side of your head you’re ‘chosen’ and if it’s on the other, you’re not?….. I think you’re full of yourself and you’re ‘spiritual path of 2012′. And now don’t you think that might get you into trouble? Being perhaps blissfully ignorant? ’nuff said.
This may be off the wall, but after reading post after post and no one with an answer, I’d like to submit a “theory” I’ve had for some time. You brain synapses run on glutamate, an amino acid that provides energy. When you metabolize any amino acid, it produces ammonia as a byproduct. When you use muscles too much, the body can’t get rid of ammonia fast enough. The stiff muscles are, in part, the result.
In the brain, stress or certain inherited conditions can cause much glutamate to be “burned” producing high amounts of ammonia. They body cannot get rid of it fast enough. Ammonia is catabolic–it tears apart almost all biological matter–skin, muscles, eyes, brain.
I have noticed that people have lopsided faces (higher eyebrows on one side, muscles, eyes, more saggy on the other side) which I think corresponds with right-brain, left-brain stuff. [If you are right-brained, the right side is more damaged, even though left side of brain is used to control the right.] My theory is that the excess from the “over-used” side of the brain is damaged by the ammonia.
I think that as the brain circulates brain fluids, when excess ammonia is there (maybe as a result of trauma and expending amino acids to ‘fix” the problem), there may be damage from the inside out as a result. That area may remain vulnerable so that, whenever you are under stress (tired at night), that area thins again. It makes sense also that it is sometimes symetrical as the brain fluid flows between the two halves of the brain at the top, around the side of the ears to the front. Somewhere I found an illustration online. I’ll provide it if I can find it.
I think the ammonia (and maybe cortisol) also affects graying patterns. Look at the way men (and women) gray–along the sides above the ears first. I think it follows the brain fluid circulation path. Even look at Barack Obama’s left hairline in the front. There is a one-inch area thinner than the other side on the left side. He is a lefty.
[FYI-I know this is radical thinking but I have a condition where my NMDA brain receptors have been "downregulated" by long-term stress (physical & mental), and whenever my pituitary has to kick in, the ammonia actually flows down the back of my neck, damaging shoulder muscles repeatedly, causing them to be over-built. I have sores on my sternocleidomastoid muscles in the front of my neck because ammonia flows down the back of my neck and long that muscle. The sores vary based on how long it goes on. Ammonia causes hundreds of other kinds of damage depending on how long it continues. ]
