Recently, in the past year or two, I noticed some indentations in my skull that show up occasionally. I’ve yet to find any information about them on Google or the like (Web MD, etc), so I’m hoping by posting here, perhaps Google will pick it up and someone else with the same situation may have an idea.
The dents are symmetrical, mirrored across the left and right halves. They’re about 5cm long and 1.5cm wide — sometimes larger in both dimensions. I only noticed them because of a nervous tendency to mess with my hair. They’re not there all the time. I’ve only noticed them late at night — tonight is the earliest, being only around 10:30PM.
Since I can’t predict when they’ll be there, I can’t see myself going to a doctor to explain all of this, wasting money and time on something he wouldn’t be able to witness. Plus, it’s not associated with any pain or dizzyness or anything like that — perhaps only tiredness, but that’s probably due to the hour more than the dent. It could be nothing, but nobody I have spoken to about it has found it familiar. It’s a mystery.

I don’t know your name, but I noticed the same thing about myself. Just this evening I showed my daughter who said she could even see the dents in my forehead. If you find anything, I would be very interested in knowing what this could be. I will make an appointment with my doctor to ask if he has any opinion.

Perhaps you’re seeing the coronal sutures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gray_188_-_Side_view_of_the_skull.png) of your skull? As far as them being more prominent in the evening, I’d postulate that your body ’settles’ throughout the day as you are upright. It is a widely known fact that you are slightly taller in the morning compared to in the evening, and most of us wake up “puffy” in the morning and end up “droopy” late at night. This might accentuate the appearance of the “dents” in the evening. What do you think?
December 23rd, 2004 at 11:05 am
The dents go from front to back, so it seems like it might be between the Superior Temporal Line and the Inferior Temporal Line, and I just feel them start and end around where those two lines converge. Thank you for the image, though.
You’re probably right about the settling, too.
Thanks for your post, and thanks Linda for your post.
December 29th, 2004 at 1:57 pm
So yeah, the doctor agreed, it’s probably those coronal sutures. Nothing to worry about.

I’ve had a rather large dent in the back top of my head ever since I can remember. To the best of my knowledge this was not the result of any trauma to my head. Just recently I’ve developed another one just in front of the first. My doctor has no idea what the cause could be. I’ve had x-rays and a bone scan and was told everything looked fine. I’m scheduled to have a CT scan . I am a very healthy active 44 yr old who doesn’t even get colds and there is no family histort of anything like this. I can’t find any information either and would appreciate any given. Thanks, Kim

My partner has just found indentations in his skull too. At least two possibly 3. He was sent for an urgent head x-ray yesterday and blood tests today. Blood tests normal but the x-ray definitely shows the holes and the doctor was worried! He goes tomorrow about booking a CT scan. he has been having headaches for two weeks now and also has ringing in his ears which has been going on for a while. This evening he said the holes were bigger, so maybe what the person was saying about evening time, etc is right. If i have news about the CT Scan i will let you know but it might not be until December. We live in Portugal. I would like e-mail from anyone that has same problem but don’t know if i should put address here. Michele

I have suffered a small stroke in recent years and chronic migraines. A couple of months ago I noticed that I was losing an enormous amount of hair in the front right portion of by hairline. I sought the opinion of my primary care physician and was told that my stress levels were probably the culprit. After receiving 17 horrific steroid injections into the balding spots on my cranium, I decided to just get a clever haircut to conceal the loss and wait for my hair to grow back in. Just one week ago I checked on the patterns that were treated, to see if the treatment had been successful. Thumbs up, everything is coming in just fine. Tonight I just happened to run my fingers past the same location on my forehead and I found this dent. The dimensions, I couldn’t tell you. I am very concerned. I will be seeing a doctor tomorrow. Wish me luck. I’ll post any findings.

I kinda have something wierd i found today, too, its no secret to me that i have a slight lump/bump in the middle of my forehead that family etc.. say is nothing to worry about (I’m male, 24) and i do feel that is just a normal line of my skull, however this morning,to the side of it was a visible black line down one side, where i could feel almost a “ridge” or canal in the forhead from the hairline down, maybe 3cm in total? I’m not 100% sure on what it is, or why it has happened today but i intend to get it checked out asap to be sure.

I am interested in these comments. I have had an indentation over my right eye from my hairline back about an inch long. I attributed it either to hitting my head on the bottom of kitchen cabinets VERY hard quite some time ago or to plastic surgery I had 3 years ago. However, last night I realized I have a large indentation in the middle from the hairline back and another starting on the other side, mirroring the original indentation.
This is very worrying! I didn’t see anything very conclusive in the above comments — especially from the people who said they were going to see the doctor right away! Either it’s good news — or very bad news they didn’t want to share!
Hopefully, someone will see this and comment.

Hi, I have the same problem, it started with one indention now I have two and they are getting bigger. I can’t remember hitting my head in this area. I have been getting tremendous headaches. And even sometime my scalp is tender to touch almost like bruising. Hope someone has a clue or knows what it might be. thanks
June 18th, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Same story here! I’ve got two parallel dents beginning approximately 3cm back from my hairline, that run about 2″ in length. They are towards the center of my head (if you drew two lines that ran up over my forehead from the bridge of my nose. I’ve banged my head on the car door a few times, but nothing permanent I’m sure. So, I was interested in what might cause these dents in my head…I’d love to find out!

Just today I was shopping with a friend and noticed an indentation on the left side of the top of my head. It is about two inches long. I am very worried about it. I don’t have a headache or anything. Has anyone found out anything about this condition? I am between doctors and don’t want to go to the emergency room for something that is not an emergency. Does anyone have any answers? I would be happy to hear from you.

My husband noticed two indentations on his skull two days ago. I am worried too! I have tried to find info online, but am finding nothing pertaining to adults. He says he feels fine, but I plan to make an appt. for him asap. Also, these “soft spots” are reddish in color. If anybody knows what this may be or have seen a doctor and got a diagnosis…please share!
Thanks so much!

Hi, I’m Al. I’m a 17 year ol male and I am quite healthy and active physically. But for the past couple of years I’ve had a “problem” that the doctor say I shouldn’t worry about, but the truth is, I am VERY concerned about it. Here’s my problem. Both sides of my head (on the coronal suture) are uneven. What I mean is that I have a slight “lump” on the right side of my head, but a slight indentation on the left side. The lump on the right side is hard, but sometimes feels painful and/or sensitive to the touch. It also hurts when I touch the indented left side. At night when I take a shower and wash my hair, my skull hurts allot and I feel tingling and numbness in my hand and feet (mostly in my hands). When I lie in bed, I usually sleep on my side. If I lie on the right side of my head, a small, painful lum will appear on the left side of my head, and the if I lie on the left side of my head, then the lump on the right side of my head gets bigger! and worse, if I lie on the back of my head, I get a lump on both sides of my head and my hands, feet, and tongue go numb. Sometimes in the morning I’ll wake up and it’s actually kinda difficult just to wriggle my fingers or toes because they are so numb. I’ve gone to the doctor about this three times already and he doesn’t know what it is or what could be the cause of it. He also told me not to worry about it but I can’t help it. If anyone knows what this condition might be, please tell me, because I can’t find out any information about it on the web. Thanks.

I too have noticed an approx. 2 to 3″ long indent in my skull recently. It starts just back from my hairline (center of my head) and seems to run backward towards the center/top of my head. I’m a 39 year old female, in good health with no underlying health issues. It’s freaking me out…hope someone has some insight soon.
July 11th, 2006 at 3:11 pm
Could it be a form of linear scleroderma. Look for En coup de sabre.
July 13th, 2006 at 5:23 pm
Hi Im not sure if anyone can help or add any comments that have been through the same thing as me. I had been having headaches for a year and i went to the emergency room and they injected cortizone in my scalp now i have a huge dent in that spot and i almost cry to even brush my hair. I see a neurologist and he was no help sayd oh probably a migraine has anyone experinced this before?
August 26th, 2006 at 8:08 pm
I just wanted to comment that I recently discovered a similar ridge on my head. The ridge runs from front to back and is about 2cm to the right of the top of my head. I noticed it when I was washing my hair and felt a tender spot, and since then I can’t stop wondering what this might be. If anyone has gotten an answer or explanation I would love to hear it.
August 29th, 2006 at 6:23 pm
Hi,
I’ve just noticed one of these too, and am a bit concerned – especially since no one seems to have received any information.
Not to compromise confidentiality or to sound like a consipiracy theorist, but is anyone from Canada (i.e. are we all from around the same place)? i’m thinking maybe it has to do with hydro lines or something?
September 6th, 2006 at 9:26 am
Did you get any answers? I have only just recently had the same problem. Two lines going from the front to the back of my head. I thought originally it was the line of my parting but it is not. I have also noticed that they get more prominent in the evenings. When I wash my hair I cannot feel them at all which led me to believe they had something to do with my parting. I would be very interested to know what they are and if i should be worrying about them. I have no other symptoms but would like to know.
September 6th, 2006 at 10:10 am
That’s exactly what I have Maureen. It’s apparently normal and nothing to worry about (coronal sutures).
October 3rd, 2006 at 10:25 pm
Hi~
My daughter who is 26 just discovered dents in her head as well. Nothing we have found expalins this. If ANYONE finds out a clue to these dents…please let us know. She is in relatively great health, doesn’t have nay unusual symptoms…just notices dents in her scalp. On occasion, they are tender.
Thanks for any help.

Hello, Ive just skimmed through all of these comments and thought I’d share what I’ve noticed lately as well… On the left side of my forhead is a dent, starting around my hairline and going in a very straight line to the top of my noise (felt when running my finger down it). I don’t know what it is. Or if it is anything to worry about. I do get regular headaches for some time now. I really don’t know anything about it, just that ive noticed a very prevelant dent in my forhead for a few months now…
October 17th, 2006 at 7:33 am
Oh and just for reference… I am a 25 year old female. I havent been sick (had a cold) in almost two years. Excellent health.
October 19th, 2006 at 9:19 am
I am a 26 year old female-About a month ago,my mother who is a hairdresser, was getting ready to highlight my hair and noticed a huge dent in my skull-since then I have noticed two more smaller ones. The first one we noticed, which is also the largest dent changes time to time, sometimes it is very deep and other times is seems to feel more “filled in” but still noticeable. My grandmother emailed her brother in-law about this “condition,” he is a nuero specialist and his response was that this is not normal and I shold have it checked out right away. I am going to go to see a physician as soon as possible-if I find anything out I will be sure to post it-until then if anyone else has found out anything please share!!
November 11th, 2006 at 6:17 am
i have 2 dents, but on the back of my head which i can clearly feel running my fingers. I’ve noticed long back, but these days as my hair is getting thinner, it looks prominent and if i’m not wrong, any person can detect the abnormality with in closing distance. apart from combing my hair to cover it, i often find uncomfortable with my skull shape. this is the reason i’ve always stayed away from buzz cut.
yes, i also notice that the diminesion of the dents changes after waking up, but it is kind of hard skull bone when i touch and feel it. i’ve migraine headaches too.
November 15th, 2006 at 10:48 am
Hi.
Thank god I am not alone on this. Two weeks ago found a dent on the top of my crown about 2 inches long. Hope someone can shed some light on this. Searched the internet and found nothing only all your comments.
November 24th, 2006 at 6:45 pm
i noticed recently an assymetrical indentation in the center, slightly right part of my forehead around hair-line. here is some info i found that can hopefully be useful to some. the doctor refers to bumps/protuberances but i think it equally applies:
” Actually, they are fairly common. They usually are caused by childhood injury (falls and accidental bangs to the head) which causes minor adjustments in the thickness of the skull or the areas where the skull plates join. In some cases, a person’s skull simply forms a certain way. I knew a young man in high school who literally had a “squared” head. There were corners along the top of his skull (they were rounded, but were corners nonetheless).
“Although the skull is “solid” it is actually formed from 22 different bones – 14 of which are in the face. The other 8 bones comprise the upper and rear portions of the skull, known as the cranium. The most common areas to find “lumps and protrusions” in the skull are where the bone plates of the cranium meet. In some people with shaved heads you can clearly see outlines of certain bone plates, while other people may appear to have perfectly smooth skulls.”

For about a year now I’v notice the same thing with my head. At first I thought it came from when I hit my head on the trunk of my car years ago, but at the time when that happened there was no scare or bleeding. I also noticed it on my mother’s head one day when I was doing her hair. I know when I went on google I couldn’t find any info on adults just infants. I thought the dent was accuring from me being dehydrated but that wasn’t the case, I hydrated and still felt the dent. I really don’t know what the cause of this is. Any info please let me know.
December 6th, 2006 at 3:57 pm
I just noticed this same dent at the top right of my head. It changes size during the day. My internet research has not come up with anything. I don’t have headaches but I do have tinnitus and am wondering if this could be related.
January 13th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
i have looked for evrything about this, and only found this site. i have 3 dents they are tender and at times they are smaller. i always rub them because i feel relief when i massage them. i feel my nerves pulsating often. i would love to know what this is from.
February 9th, 2007 at 10:34 pm
I too have just found quite a large dent towards the back of my skull. I am a 32 year old female living in Australia. I cannot tell you the last time I was sick or needed to take any medication so I consider myself quite healthy. I do not remember any bumps or falls as a child that would have caused this dent. I dont like to touch it as I am really not sure what the cause is. A lot of people were going to get answers did anyone get any?
February 11th, 2007 at 10:24 pm
I have a dent on the right side of my skull, about a inch long. When my head was tender and soft during a brain operation as a little kid I kept pressing on it, and I believe thats how I made this indentation. But the doctors said my skull was fine and that it should be nothing to worry about. I’m just curious to know whether the dent is harmful because when I box and throw many punches rapidly or miss a punch and my head moves with the snapping motion i feel as if my head just got hit by someone or if i just banged my head against a book. Does anyone get the same pain when they do this? or turn their head to the left or right too fast?
February 16th, 2007 at 10:26 am
I just found a “dent” or “ridge” in my skull too. It runs along my hairline. Seems to be about 1/4″ deep. Somewhat sensitive to touch. No insurance so can’t go to the doctor and have had the same frustration searching on the internet. (All related to child’s injuries/abnormalities.) Did anyone get any feed-back when the saw their doctors?
February 16th, 2007 at 10:28 am
I asked my doctor and he said they were probably just the coronal sutures, like another poster said. I’m satisfied.
February 16th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
I know others here have already asked for any advice on skull dents, I would like to urge anyone who has any additional information what so ever to please write in. My boyfriend has a 2 inch dent on the right side of his head. When he holds his head to the right the area of skin around the dent fills up with liquid, then when the head is tilted upright the liquid goes away. Both doctors and specialists don’t have any answers, only that it came from a severe blow to the head. This is not the case. The dent has been there as long as he can remember. Any information relevant to this would be extremely appreciated.
February 19th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
Hi…this is so wierd. Does anyone have any other symptoms? I have a small indentation about 1 inch above my left eyebrow that I just noticed recently. However I have other things going on as well. Hair loss, sweating, cold, lack of energy, my hormone tests show I have extremely low hormone levels, increase in blood sugar, headaches, blurred vision, weight gain, nasuea, dizziness, drippy nose and other various things. I am wondering, after doing a bit of research if it could be patuitary gland.
Does anyone have similar symptoms? If you have any ideas it would be appreciated. Also I am going to ask my doc to see an endocrinologist. maybe they might know…
February 20th, 2007 at 12:43 am
Two years ago I noticed a one inch dent just below my hair line, and also a raised area near it. I also experienced alot of pain and a feeling of numbness in this area. I went to my doctor and she seemed perplexed and preformed a “punch” test of skin to rule out skin cancer. The test came back normal but said there was tissue loss. The doctor said the dent was prpbably caused by some old injury. Since then the dent seems to have gotton wider and I am having shooting pains that go back towards themiddle of the top of my head. I want to have an mri because the pain is getting worse and I am tired of worring about it! I also have found nothing on this subject except this site. I noticed no one has written back with any results, have they all perished?!!! I thought the guy in canada was hilarious but maybe on the right track, maybe we”re being abducted and experimented on!!! Whatever it is I cant wait to find out!

Hi all
It is so strange I stumbled on this forum as I have the same problem as all of you, I have nearly always had a dent in the top of my head – but as the years have gone on this has widened I can fit the tops of 3 fingers in it now – I also have noticed new dents on the right side above my temple and the left side also . My hair has started to thin in the front – ( not good for a woman)
and over the past few years I have experienced little spasms in my head – sort of like a brain shake – recently this little spasm was quite big and although it only lasted a few seconds, I got an awful headache and full feeling behind my eyes. My doc has reffered me to a neurologist for this. I never mentioned the dents though, because I just assumed they were normal ish –
But the dents do seem to be changing in shape and depth.
It is all very strange. I am also a migraine sufferer and have been diagnosed with Sarcoidosis in the past.

Hey it looks like I’m not alone. I have noticed that I had deep indents on the left and right sides of the back of my head and a boney ridge in the middle that feels like a spine! I have started losing a lot of hair and I get these quick pains in these areas about five times a day. I will go to a doctor and see if he thinks this is something serious and post back….
March 10th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Hi, my wife has this problem too. She has a dent about 2 inches long and runs from front to back. It lays slightly on the right side of her skull and towards the back. She complains of headaches and asks me to rub near it to relieve her headaches. We will be going to the doctors soon. If anyone has heard back please post again. We will post what we find out.
March 10th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
My wife, age 44, has two pretty big “dents” in the left upper part of her head…this began a couple of years ago. The other interesting (and troubling) thing is that she has 3-4 spots of alopecia areata in the same areas, both on the left upper head. Shes so worried she will go bald. Doctors have prescribed cortisone cream and tried cortisone injections but the spots of alopeica have only gotten worse. it also seems like the “dents” are getting deeper. It seems like the dents and the alopecia areata have to be related. Any ideas??
March 12th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
well if more than one person says they have the same thing then that probably means that its normal. Im sure there is nothing to worry about. Obviously its normal if ive looked up what it was too.
March 27th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
I am a 22 year old female with epilepsy and since I can remember have had a 3×3 inch flat indentation at the back of my head, so assumed that any “dents” were from the 3 seizures I have had…but then about a week or two ago noticed a bump or 2 indentations which make the area between them feel like a bump along my part……and it seems like a lot of people have these, but most people said it was coronal sutures, but one person said it was NOT common and should be seen by a doctor asap. Did anyone find out what it was and whether it was a problem?
April 2nd, 2007 at 6:24 pm
My mother-in-law had a very itchy head about one year ago. Her GP seemed unconcerned. Due to arthritic cervical vertebrae a skull/neck xray was ordered. Numerous lesions lit up over her skull on the xray. Further testing showed these areas were metastatic tumors from a primary cancer elsewhere. Radiation treatments over a 5 day period left numerous indentations in the areas of these identified tumors. The edges of the indents were gentle at first, but over time, the indentations became deeper and the edges are more abrupt. Other areas of her skeletal structure, which also “lit up” on xray were radiated to kill the tumor, have now led to some destruction of the bone in those areas. ( The oncologist feels it is better to rid the body of some of the tumor at a risk of bone loss). She is now receiving chemo for a primary lung cancer. When the oncologist first saw the numerous skull indentations, he thought it may be classical “Multiple Myeloma”.
In summary, ask for an xray – and may God be with you.

Hi everyone.
I just noticed this on myself as well. I have very thin and noticebly thinning hair, so I went to a dermatologist who gave me steroid injections in my scalp. I looked up online to see what the side effects of those injections were, and it was atrophy – indentation, and change in color pigment, among a few other things. I’m pretty convinced that is what my issue is, although it is freaking me out a bit. Hope this helps anyone who may have had the same procedure and same side effects as me.

Hi.. this is odd! Its great to know that I am not the only one with a dent in my head. It seems like a rige in my scull about 5cm long and very sensitive to touch. If I persue in touching it I get terrible shooting pains through my scull when moving around (speciatlly when getting up from sitting down). I too have not addressed this with my doctor, as I feel that I may be over-reacting. Maybe I should just go see him to put my mind at ease.

HI, JUST GOOGLED “SKULL DENTS” THINKING NOTHING WILL COME UP! WHAT A SURPRISE AND ALSO RELIEF TO FIND OUT OTHERS HAVE THEM TOO. MINE CAME BACK TODAY. JUST ABOVE MY RIGHT EYEBROW, SHOWED MY HUSBAND AND YOU COULD SEE THE LOOK IN HIS EYES TELLING ME “THAT WASNT THERE YESTERDAY”. I HAVE NOTICED THIS DENT COME AND GO THOUGH FOR PAST YEAR OR SO, SO I AM GOING TO THE DOCTOR TO FIND OUT

I am 51 and several weeks ago felt a dent in my head. I had a skull fracture when I was 15 and have never felt this dent or anything else. I went to my doctor sho immedicately sent me for a skull xray which came up negative. I am going today for CT of the head. I also would like to know what this is and don’t intend to just sit back and wait to find out it’s something. I have Diabeties, 2 herniated disk and fibromyalgia, none of which contributed to this. I’ll let you know what I find out.
May 20th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Found a small dent in my head last week, about two cm above my right eyebrow and about 1cm long. Having been suffering increasingly bad headaches over the past couple of years, sometime so bad and with nausea that I have had time off work, but my doctor doesn’t seem to think that its migraine, as I have no flashing lights and the pain is right across the front of my forehead.
I google the ‘dent in the forehead’ to try and find out SOMETHING as these headaches are really getting me down and I was wondering if the dent was related to it….but I had started to doubt myself…maybe the dent was always there…but why didn’t I remember it!!
I think I may now mention it to my doctor and see what she says….probably that I’ve ‘lost it’…..
May 20th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
I’ve been asking around about this and no one seems to know what causes them. Those that had the CT scans done, please let us know the results asap. Even though we all know that every situation can be different, most of the comments state the same conditions. Someone did mention lto me that it could be lack of Hormones, which could explaine the loss of hair, someone else said that it could be to much calcium, which could make parts of your head grow. I’m 37, never sick, many migrains and a very unbalanced hormone situation.
Please let us know the results of those CT scans!
Thanks,
S

I recently found out that I have a dent on my head. It is kind of small, round and reddish. It is the same spot where I had a steroid injection because I was suffering from alopecia areata. This is the 2nd injection that I have on the same spot. The first time I was injected there was no dent. It is just that I went for a 2nd injection because only some of the hair grew the first time as I think the doctor only injected in a few spots. I thought the male doctor might have used too much strength in pressing my scalp to stop the bleeding after he pulled out the injection. I had an injection a few years back and it was very successful as the lady doctor was very gentle and whatever injection she used, it make my hair grow back all. But this recent doctor of mine is good too but he is treating me for another illness so I thought I come to him for my alopecia areata which I think may be caused by stress or age. I’m in my middle 30’s. I will be going to check with him to see if maybe he pressed too hard or maybe I should not have asked to be injected in the same spot. Anyway thanks for sharing in this website, I thought there was something wierd with me.

I just noticed a dent that begins at my hairline on the right about a half inch or so to the right of center. I can fit the pad of my index finger into the dent, and it is tender to the touch. I have chronic headaches, often feel dizzy or lightheaded, nausea, tinnitus and strain related right eye pain. I am pretty darn certain that I didn’t have the dent until very recently. I had a CT scan about a year ago for the headaches and tinnitus since I have a family history of Neurofibromatosis and we wanted to ensure that I didn’t have any tumors lurking in my brain. No tumors, hooray, but the headaches and other symptoms are persistent. I’m not trying to say that I believe that there is a connection between the dent any my symptoms, just saying that I did have a CT scan and nothing showed up as out of the ordinary.
I feel like a total hypochondriac because I’ve seen my doctor repeatedly about the headaches, etc, and we’ve been able to find nothing wrong. Stress and below ideal levels of exercise were thought to be the culprit, but I’ve been addressing those issues with no change in my symptoms.
Even though I totally want to poke around there, I am trying to not screw with the dent. Leave it to me to start thumping on a soft spot – stick in my thumb and pull out a plum! :P
Good to know that there are tons of denty heads out there, though. Makes me feel less concerned.

I am having the same issues with my head. I have a constant headache and vertigo to go with it. There is a huge dent in the top of my head near the crown. If I apply pressure near the dent, the headache eases a little. I really want to go to my doctor about this. . .she would probably think I am a quack with too much time on my hands. I wish the posters who went to the doctor would let us know what they found out from their doctors. This is certainly strange!

For those who this applies to:
The indentations that begin between 1cm to 1in behind the hairline and travel back towards the top of the head are, to the extent of my knowledge, caused by prolonged stress and anxiety. The bones in the top of the skull become softer as the body remains under the influences of stress and anxiety, which result in an indentation that can grow over time. It’s not dangerous, per say, but it is one of the potential indicators of an anxiety disorder.

have posted on here before. dent gone but i totally agree with “j” saying its related to stress. i am under enormous stress at present regarding financial matters and i am very surprised that i havent “shut down” emotionally, have to keep going for sake of kids etc, so if my dent is due to that there is a wonder i am not denty all over my head lol. have taken to drinking to lots of water incase it was dehydration as i vaguely remember when my son was baby if he did not have enough water his front of head “fontanelle?” went deeper, so perhaps thats why “denty” went. i know he will be back as he came last year and stayed for a while… regards to all dentys out there!!

I am so glad to have found this website….. about 2-3 days ago I noticed an indention just to the left of the center line of my skull, starting about an inch from my hairline and going from front to back about 3 inches….. I have noticed it rapidly increasing in depth … then just tonight it seems one is developing just on the right of center….. I honestly feel I am creating these by just continuously checking my head….. I have not had any pain or headaches, but I have had a habit of pulling my hair …. in the past six months my hair has become extremely brittle and wirey ( I originally assumed a bad hair color job) but it has gotten worse. My overall health stinks….. diabetic, hypothyroidism since birth, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and rosacia…..I think I will try and see the doctor tomorrow… I will definately let you all know if I learn of anything……again, it is such a relief just to know I am not the only one….I was afraid to go to the doctor…. they make you sick , you know…..I feel fine….but they keep diagnosing me as “sick” …. obesity is a killer!!!

I have had one dent for quite a long time, but tonight i found another one at the side of the original one, smaller but there. Thats why i came back to this site to see if there were any updates. If its stress, i can relate to that! Been stressed out for months. The dents come and go, and are more prounounced in the evening.

HI,
Yesterday my mother noticed these two dents in my forhead that rund from the front hairline and appraoch eachohter toward ( or getting close to) the bridge of my nose. Today when I was getting my haircut, decided to look at it in the mirror to see what she was talking about. I told the lady that was cutting my hair what I was doing and why I was looking and she said that she had noticed it too and never so me like that ( she has been cutting my hair for several years now). That is why I decide to search and came up with this site. I don’t get headaches. But over the past several years I have been experimenting with natural health care as I feel that I have always had hypothyroidism which might explain why I suffer from depression which I have been on meds for for several years now. I started taking this homeopathic suppliment that is used for thyroid support. The directions on the box indicate that it should be taken three times daily. After several weeks, I found the cumulative effects of 3X daily to be too much. So, I recently cut back to two and finally one time a day. Maybe this does have to do with hormones and stress leves. Stress and hormones are somewhat related to eachother.

Boy…I am pretty unnerved as well!!! I’m glad I am not the only person…my dent is directly in line w/ the “softspot” everyone has on their heads…any ideas!!!

hi, my name is Denise. i’m 40 yrs old, and have noticed this dent in my skull for about a few months now. it seems to get more sore later in the day. this is the first time looking this up. I thought it was crazy, so i never really mentioned it to anyone, not even my doctor. I have looked on some other sites, there are more people with this , all that say basically the same thing. It doesn’t seem to be anything too serious, someone even mentioned that when they found out they had a gluten intolerance and changed thier diet the spot seemed to start going away. this might be something to look into

I agree a lot with what Lewis found. How the cranium coming together from several plates when you are a child. Eventually forming together. Not always so perfectly. Although Ive always believed this to be the case, I can’t help but wonder: My sister noticed a “triangle” like outline on my forehead a few weeks ago. We joked about it being from me tanning and getting one of those “sun” spots. But when I went home I looked at it closer. And felt the lines/dents/ridges. In shape of a triangle. Running from the hairline above my left eye all the way to a point stopping at my eyebrow then coming back up to the hairline father apart then the starting line. It freaked me out at first. But then I thought of how I have always had those “dents” in the back of my head since I could remember. They gave me comfort as a child. I would instinctlvely know to put some pressure on this dents to subside my headaches. And it worked most of the time. I dont know what is going on with this triangle sort of a line…but I know I can’t worry about it too much. What could the doctors really do anyway??? I dont want someone slicing my head open….NO THANK YOU. Surely there must be a doctor in this world that has a dent or something…surely there has to be… All these doctors saying it’s nothing…it may not be harmful…but it sure isnt…NOTHING.

I am surprised that there isn’t more information about these skull indentations on the web. Just like many of you, I have two prominant dents. When I first found them (around 20+ years ago), I have had doctors tell me that 1) it is a skull tumor (I had already had one at 6 years old, was removed, and was benign), 2) no it is a scalp issue, 3) no it isn’t anything to worry about because it is growing too slowly, 4) no there is an abnormality in the skull, and 5) the most recent, no there isn’t anything wrong. The surgery left a hole which is still there, but one of the dents is deeper, wider, and longer than that hole. I don’t have any symptoms except the dents which are tender to the touch. What are they? Is there something pushing down on the meninges around the brain or the brain itself? Is the dent just empty? There seem to be a lot of people with the same issue. Isn’t there someone who knows what is going on?

Hey everyone,
For a few months now my mum has had two indents on the top of her head which we have all been quite concerned about. She is finally going to the doctor tomorrow, so I promise you all who are worried about what’s going on with their heads that when I get home from school I will post her results. There’s nothing worse than being worried for your self or people you care about. Let’s hope its a natural occurrence! Good luck to you all.

Hi,
I stumble across this site, like others I have a indent on the top right side of my head. I mean huge. I can fit the palm of my hand inside. I have had this indent ever since I could remember. I always had trouble with depression and other forms of mental illness OCD, ADD and have been to doctors and on medications. Well, I laways joked around and said that the indent was the cause. Well, a few years ago when I was at the doctors about my depression I mention this dent. When the doctor felt the dent he immediately said that is was from a early cranium fracture. I had another opinion and the doctor said the same thing. I never remembered having any injury, because of the size of my dent the doctor said it had to happan when I was a baby, that the soft spot in the brain actully saved my life and that if it happaned when I was older and my skull wasn’t as soft, it might have killed me. I was in a very abusive first marriage and my husband on several occassions would bang my head against the wall, sometimes I would almost pass out but I knew that wasn’t the cause because I remember having that dent as a child.
I asked my mother and she said the only thing she could remember is that I fell off my changing table when I was a few weeks old. Could this have caused this damage?
Well, I really never got any tests done on my brain and I think I am going to start looking into it. I was checking out another site which says some skull fractures in childhood could leave dents which is a result of a bone putting pressure on the brain. I don’t believe anything serious is going on, but I would like to know if alot of my depression, etc could be a result of this injury. As big as this dent is..I would like to know what it is pressing on.
I say don’t worry about your dent, it is probably nothing to worry about, if I had this huge dent on my head all these years and nothing serious resulted from it that a few pills won’t help, I am sure you will be find too. But only you know your body and the changes you might be having so………..to ease your mind, go to the doctors.

Hey again,
My mum went to the doctors yesterday, and they sent her for x-rays today. The doctor said he thought it may be a disease called Pagets disease- a softening and expanding of the bone. Apparently it’s not curable, however its treatable. At the x-ray today the person said that he couldn’t see any evidence of Pagets, but the doctor would have to verify that. If its not Pagets, then mum has to get a CT. A possibility is what someone mentioned above, Myeloma or something, cancer in the plasma cells (bone marrow). I’ll post the results once we know. However, everyone who is worried should go to the doctors, as it all is an individual thing. One person’s results may not be the same for the other. Good luck, and I’ll post the results soon.

My daughter (14 yrs old), started noticing small indents in her head around January 2007. We monitored them and when we noticed they were growing in size (and more were forming), we went to her primary care Dr. He did a CBC and found nothing abnormal. I pushed for further testing to be done…we visited an orthopaedic, who sent us to a neurosurgeon. He did a CT scan of the skull and found definite bone loss. She is scheduled for a complete body scan in the morning. We will find the results of that on the 26th (Thursday). The neurosurgeon has referred us to an ENT because he sees a mass in her nasal cavity (that he says “looks like a calcium deposit”). We have an appt with the ENT next week.
We are hoping and praying that this is something simple and not anything serious. The unknown is the worst part… to see these highly educated doctors not have a clue…it’s scary!
I’ll update you all when I know something… in the meantime, please pray for Kaley.
Thank you SO much!

My son who is now 18 has had a bumby indented skull from around the age of two. All the usual baby monitoring check ups never showed any problems and he was a very health baby/child. My mum first noticed his head not feeling quite right when he was about 18 months. After lots of doctor, then peodeatric appointments everyone was still puzzled. He had tests and CT scans which all came back normal. My own doctor was still puzzled and got me an appointment with a friend of his who was a neuro surgeon. He checked all the test/scan results and said he had come across this before although quite rare but his words were that it was just a variation of normal. He said it may smoothen as he grew but it would never be completely smooth. He also re-assured me that there was nothing to worry about. If there was a serious problem he would be suffering from headaches and sickness. As the years past he was and still is a very healthy active normal child, into lots of sports etc. I have always monitored his head for any changes which never happened until approx 4 years ago whilst living in the USA. I was running my fingers through his hair to wake him up for school and his head felt smooth!!!! I could not believe it, but on closer insepction i noticed that the gaps had been filled with liquid and when gently touched you could hear the liquid squelching around, this completely freaked me out. He felt absolutely fine and completely normal and went to school. When he got home from school the liquid had gone and his head was back to how it used to be.I took him to emergency. Two doctors saw him and i explained that he’d always had a bumby/indented head that had been diagnosed as a variation of normal but the liquid was a new occurance. Again they didn’t seem at all fased by his bumpy head and could’nt really give me an explaination for the liquid. This happened a few more mornings but has never happened again. I can honestly say my son has always been a picture of health although i do feel that his eye sockets are quited deeply set but don’t know if this is related to the way his skull has formed. I’m just hoping and praying he will carry on a healthy life without this ever causing him a problem but i do worry about him going bald as he did shave his hair very short once and it looked awful. Does anyone know if surgery would be an option? The whole thing still baffles me, I wonder if i have investigated every avenue and am still trying to obtain more info from the web but as many of you have said there isn’t any info on adults or these indentations happening in older children/adults.

I just happened to notice a dent in my head tonight and it really freaked me out. It almost feels soft. I googled “dent in my head” and found this site. Many people have posted their concerns and seem fine, but I guess that we don’t know what happens after. Then, there are those that are going for tests and worried that it might be something serious!!! I’ve been feeling depressed and lots of aching in my body. I went to the doctor and they did blood work and found nothing, but it is Kaiser and most of the time they are just in a rush to get me out quick. I think I’ll schedule an appointment tomorrow and hope that it’s alright. Good luck to everyone! It will be alright.

UPDATE TO July 22, 2007 POST…
The full body scan shows nothing abnormal. The ENT doesn’t see anything suspicious in the nasal cavity. She goes into the hospital on Monday (Aug 6th), for a bone biopsy, they will do a scraping and a punch out on he largest indent. The bone will be sent to pathology…I will let you know the outcome.

What a relief to have found this site, as I thought I was the only one with a dent in my head!!!! I’ve noticed a ridge on top of my head about a month ago too! My friends are laughing at me when I ask their advice and think I’m imaginging things. I’m not a hypohondriac, I swear, but they think I always find weird things in my body that turn out to be nothing. I sure do hope it’s nothing. I’ve been under a lot of strees as well lately, but then who hasn’t! I don’t even know who to ask, as I’ve seen my GP only ones, and not sure I even trust her opinion. This board was started 3 years ago and noone still knows what is really going on? Hope we all are just too aware of our bodies.

PamE, I’ve been waiting for your update and praying for your daughter, wishing you both all the best for Monday, hope all goes well.

Hi everyone,
I am Renae’s mum. Renae has made a few comments above. My local GP thought that my depressions in my skull may have been Pagett’s disease. A skull X Ray proved that to not likely be the cause. He ordered blood pathology, as I have had renal failures in the past and he thought that it may have been bone not able to replace itself normally through abnormal levels of calcium, but my calcium and phosphate levels are normal also. He ordered a CT scan and that has not been able to pin point the area, as it is two indents where my fontanelle would be. I have headachy days and the need to pop my ears frequently. Sometimes my hearing is ordinary and I feel very pressured in my head. Other days I feel fine! My indents have only been there for 8 to 10 weeks and were itchy to start with. The back of my head (where my other fontanelle would be) is now a little tender and weird too. The CT is normal, but the Dr needs to get a transverse view as he cannot see the affected area. That will be next week. He then plans to send me 5 hours North to a specialist – but he does not know what kind of specialist as he has not seen anything like this in his 30 years of practice!! My gut instinct is that it will be something that is “another form of normal” as described above. I think if it was anything really serious, I would be really ill by now. Cheers and good luck to you all. Pam I am really keen to hear how your little girl goes. Kathryn.

About 3 or 4 months ago, I noticed a dent in my head. It kept getting longer and deeper. Then i found another one. I went to the doctor and he measured them. He scheduled an x-ray and found out my skull is getting thinner in spots. I get at least two new ones a month. I had a CT scan and the results were a normal scan. I get very bad headaches and they’re getting worse. Doesn’t seem to be anything that can be done, except live with the pain. I’m hoping to go to a medical university and see if they can help. The stress idea is very possible for me so maybe I’ll talk to my doctor about it. Thanks everyone.

Strange isn’t it that we’ve all found this site after finding these dents, and strange that a majority of us are women? Also strange that none of us have found out what it is after all these posts and even doctor visits? I just found my dent along the part in my hair tonight and Googled it with no help but this site with similar situations and questions with no answers. I just had a baby 8 weeks ago and heard that babies’ soft spots deepen when dehydrated, but I’ve never experienced a “soft spot” on my head no matter how dehydrated I’ve been! Either this is normal and we’re the only ones who have noticed it enough to look it up, or this is abnormal and nobody knows what the culprit is! When someone gets an answer, PLEASE come back to this site and post!

ok ladie i noticed my indents when i started going to college. not only did o have the indents but had sever hairloss. i have no hair where the indents are. and the hir will grow and fall out again. the doc said it was stress. when i graduated the hair grew back in a little and then fallout once the indent returned. lost all my hair and can only wear a pony tail. i went to the dermatologist and got the steriod shots and it made no difference. i dont mind the indentations bt the hair loss is what is killing me. my hormones is fine, and thyroid too. the doctor said that the lck of iron can be the reason i have massive hair loss. but those indentations leave massive hair loss.
at first it started with tender scalp and then ur hair just start falling out. i have had this proble for almost 3 year and no one can help me.

Please will someone tell us….
August 16th, 2007 at 4:53 am
Hello again – this is Renae’s mum, Kathryn. Hey Tracy – I thought your posting most interesting as I too have had a baby recently – he is now about 10 months old, but I have only had the indents appear since I had him….I am still breast feeding. Since my last posting, my Dr has ordered a nuclear bone scan and is sending me to Prince of Wales to a neurosurgeon. He said that it may take 2 or 3 specialists before we figure out what the problem is. I get headaches, but not everyday. He said that he would be most suprised if it was a tumour, or bone cancer or bone infection. I wonder if a bone infection can enter via a bad tooth??? Just a thought, as I have had a woeful toothache for a while now…yes, getting brave enough to go to the dentist soon!! Having a baby was easier!! Talk to you all soon, and will keep you updated…
August 16th, 2007 at 4:55 am
Oh and Trish, no definate hair loss on my indents – but thought my brush was getting fuller than usual! K
August 16th, 2007 at 5:00 am
Message to Tammi – hi – my Dr told me that some bone conditions were very difficult to pick up in just XRays and CT Scans – honey, I would suggest that you look into something more sure, especially if your headaches are getting worse. Is your vision affected? Kathryn

UPDATE ON MY DAUGHTER (14), KALEY:
Kaley had the bone biopsy done on August 6th. The doctor said the bone was very healthy looking, although definitely thinned out (to the max). He did a complete punch out of the indented spot. He then scraped some of the bone from a thick spot, to compare the spots. He also filled in the hole he made with the scrapings of the thick bone. Kaley did very well with all of this and seems to be healing just fine. (Which is great, since school starts soon.)
As far as any test results…all I have gotten out of them so far is that the bone and the connecting tissue all are benign. The doctor also spoke to the pathologist about Kaley’s case, but they won’t dicsuss that with me on the phone. We go for her post-op visit on the 28th.
I will keep you posted.
August 16th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
To Gina & Kathryn…
Thanks SO much for the well wishes!
August 17th, 2007 at 10:31 am
I, also, have recently noticed two parallel indents running along the top center of my head just about an inch past my hairline. I was terrified and immediately googled my problem and found this website. I have also recently had a baby (he is 4 months old now). I have been home from work all summer with my son and have spent a lot of time outdoors, in the sun, with my sunglasses on. When I come inside or if it gets dark out, the sunglasses then reside on top of my head, sometimes for hours. I have realized that the grooves or dents are from the nose gaurd on my sunglasses!!!! Could it be that many of you also wear your sunglass on top of your head and that this is what is causing your trouble as well???
August 17th, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Thanks for the update PamE!! It was a relief to hear that Kaley’s results are benign. I think for any parent / individual, that is always the biggest worry initially – then we cope with the rest as it comes to hand. Good luck with the rest and please let us know how she goes. What a brave young lady she is! And what a caring mum you are! Also, hello to Nancy with the 4 month old bubba and the sunglasses – yes I wear sunglasses on my head alot – and there is a similarity to the position, however, my indents are big enough to lay half your index finger in. How big are yours? I wonder if this is a bone reaction to pressure? Out of interest too – I found something that is called “osteomalacia” which can cause thinning of the bone and is like a Vitamin D deficiency – it can cause fissures apparently, and can be related to chronic renal issues (which I have). I am going to ask my Dr about it before I make the decision about instrusive nuclear bones scans while I am still breast feeding and neurosurgeons!! I find this site comforting and I think it might even be interesting to print it out to show my Dr!!

Hi
Nice to know that I have lots of other fellow dentheads around , and we are all capable of complex thought and computer rendezvous , so it seems that these dents don’t affect cognitive functioning much or brain operation. I have had a large ridge-like dent , on the right side of skull top, that drops about 1/2 inch-about 3 inches long. and then rises again towards the back of the skull , for as long as I can remember.
I thought that the fact that my mother was severely depressed while carrying me , ( at age 41 ) , enough so to have had at least one series of Electric shock therapy treatments ,with me growing inside. of which my father reluctantly revealed under scrutiny only. In the early 60’s, and still today, this was the only non pharm treatment for mothers carrying , with severe depression. Mom also smoked while carrying me , 3rd kid an all . I was probably born a little premature , i beleive , by c section . So I reckon , that maybe my skull just hadn’t had a chance to fully develop into a more mature or rounder skull shape-also my head seems a little smaller than some others , and we all know that smoking during pregnancy , can cause physical , measureable maladies , that will permanently affect the newborn throughout his/her development. Not witstanding , i have noticed that my neice has a similiar dent in her head , and consequently suffers from depression , like my mother and I.
So , go figure-what is the doc supposd to tell you-’You’re right , you do have a rather large dent in your head.”Thinking , Is there anything that I’m going to do about it -not a freakin’ chance?
My theory-Prenancy health foibles, bone plate formation , and delivery and/or soft spots that never completely fill out-as well as brutal infant drops-parental butterfingers-that they are never going to tell you about anyway! Ha ! So how ’bout , I’ll drink to your bump and you drink to my dent !
Cheers Brian in Vanc

Hello,
I have had this indentation on the top of my head towards the back, much like everyone else. I have had this dent for as long as I can remember, and it drives me CRAZY!! I am always too nervous to go to the hair salon, wondering if the hair dresser will say anything about it! If anyone knows what the heck these things are, please, tell me!! I don’t want to go to the doctor, because I am just way too embarrassed! HELP ME!

TRISH
I would strongly recommend the book “It’s Your Hormones” for your hair loss.
I noticed a signifigant hair loss starting in April and to make a long story short and after being tested for all autoimmune disease etc I flew up to NY to see the Dr and Author of the book (Geoffery Redmond). He believes and is confident that it is a sensitivity to testosterone (your levels may be in the norm still) and has put me on medication to block it as well as birth control. He said it would be 2 – 4 months for me to see improvement and I can tell you that after 90 days I saw a signifigant improvement. My hair dresser couldn’t believe all the new hair growth she saw on my last visit. If you think this may help you could buy the book and hopefully your physician will work with you on this approach, if not I would find someone who will. Before seeing him I went to a dermatologist who unfortunately gave me cortisone injections and I have had these indentations in my skull (without headaches) as similar to other posts. Not exacty sure if they are related to the injections or not, still working on that part. Some people may get them from sebborhea dermatitis or psoriasis however treatment for dermatitis has not helped and doctors are not in the same opinion that is what I have. I hope this help as I know how distressing this can be.

Update on Kaley:
We went back to see the neurosurgeon today for the post-op visit. He says that everything came back completely normal. They haven’t a clue what could be causing it. He wants to see her back in six months, or before, if we notice any significant changes. She will be released in five weeks and can then resume her normal athletic activities. Other than the dents in her head, she is absolutely fine. So, I guess we can live with it. We are very glad to know she is not alone in this. Until I found this site, we felt totally alone. Thanks to everyone. Sincerely, PamE

Hi PamE,
So glad to hear Kaley’s post op visit went so well. Don’t know if you read my first entry about my son Jamie but he has has the dent’s in his head since been very young. We never found a real answer and i still often feel guilty, thinking i didn’t do enough to get to the bottom of it and find real answers, but may be there isn’t any?. In every other respect Jamie is still very healthy, racing motocross and playing lots of sports. Let’s pray our kids stay happy and healthy even with their bumpy heads!!!!
Take care. Gina xx

I have just noticed a fontenel like thing on the top my head. So here I am. Never noticed it before. i am worried. What could it be

This is more bone bulge than dent related, but the other day I heard someone talking about a bulge in the middle of their forehead. When he went to the doctor, the MD told him what the condition was some really big medical word.
When the guy asked, “Could you please rephrase that in English?”
The doctor replied, “Well, in essence, it means that you’re a unicorn.”
Other than the obvious cosmetic aspect of it, he had nothing to worry about.

I am so glad to have happened upon this site!!! I noticed about a week ago that I have an indention on the left side of my head over my ear and towards the top of my skull. I had mentioned it to my family members who told me to have it checked out if I was worried about it but that they were sure nothing was wrong. I was feeling of my head yesterday and to my horror noticed that I have one of the right side too! I have a head full of hair so no one ever sees it, but it has been on my mind constantly since discovering it. I’m not sure what it could be and I am too scared to go to the doctor to have it checked out. It was comforting to see that I am not the only one who has dealt with this and could not find any other information on the web concerning it. Thank goodness for websites like this one!!!

Hi. I am so glad I found this site. I found a smallish dent about an inch back from my hairline at the top of my skull. It feels weird to the touch but doesn’t hurt. I’ve had a few minor bouts of nausea lately but don’t know if there is any connection. I am going to my doctor next week and will most likely have an x-ray/CAT scan, etc. I am pretty healthy but do suffer from migraines (mostly related to my monthly cycle). If anyone has updates please post – I will when I know more :-)

I have had two “dents” in my skull running from my ears towards the back. Just realized that’s where my glasses fit. I did have another dent several years ago (where a newborn usually has one) at the top of my skull. It went away. I’m going to ask my doctor about them. They don’t hurt or anything, just there.

Hi I also searched Skull Dents on Google and found this site. I am a 38 year old mother of two and noticed two indentations, about one and half cm in diameter each, running parallel to each other from front to back, about an inch and a half from my hair line. I am well and healthy and have the occasional headache. I have been more stressed from usual and only noticed these dents about 3 week ago – I put it down to the fact that throughout the summer I have worn my sunglasses on my head a lot! Not been to the doctors. Any advice would be greatly welcome.

I’m a 28 year old male, and I recently noticed a small indentation ridge running from my hairline back about 2 inches. The ridge is about an inch to the right of center. It was not there before a week ago.
Much stress and severe depression as well. That seems to be a … could it be the cause or just another symptom of something else?

Was wondering is anyone who has dents has been exposed to or living with any viruses.
September 18th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
With the past month, I noticed two indentions on either side of the top of my head. I had never noticed them before because they were never there before. I do however have an idea of as to why they are there. Within the past 3 months, I started taking a diet pill. It was after I began taking the pills that the indentions began to set in. In many cases from what I have been learning, these “dents” are not much to be worried about. They can actually be something caused by a change in diet, a deficiency to one thing, or and intolerance to another, whether it be foods, vitamins, or other various things. I am NOT a doctor or in any way, shape, or form, educated enough to provide medical advice to anyone; however, if you have not had blood tests done to check on these things, it might be something to look into or ask your doctor about. Keep in mind that this condition technically does not have a name from what we all know; therefore, your doctor may think you are crazy if you ask for a blood test because of the dent. If there is no known diagnosis, there is no known cure, so it’s time to think outside the box. The dent can go just as it came, but we need to first see what we did to our bodies that caused it to happen. If anything changes with me, I will be sure to let you all know. Good luck to you all!

Greetings Y’all,
I guess this is where the “dent-vent” party is. So, it’s September 20, 2007, and today, after finding a large dent on the right side, running vertically from the hairline towards the top of the skull, I find myself posting to a thread that began in December, 2004. Have had similar frontal hair loss/thinning, and I so agree that male-pattern baldness is definitely not attractive on a woman. Incidentally, I wear my glasses pushed up on my head quite frequently and am also experiencing a great deal of stress. Any of this sound familiar?
Like most of you, I turned to the net and could not find any sites other than this one. It is relieving to have found all of you, because this post began almost three years ago and, with the exception of one or two instances, everyone seems to be doing (more or less) okay. If further research turns something up, or if I go to the doctor, will keep you posted. DPK — thanks for being brave enough to start this. Your last post was almost seven months’ ago. How are you doing? Inquiring, (dented) minds want to know.
Take good care,
Sharon

Well it IS a relief to know there are others out there with dents. I’m 65 and have noticed mine recently….. just the last few months. I’m a 4and a half year breast cancer survivor. I know this thing is new to me. I don’t have much stress in my life–no headaches, no head trauma, . I’ve learned to maintain a healthy (I think) level of optimism and contentment. My dent doesn’t hurt at all. It’s located just one half inch to the right of center at the hairline and goes straight down for about an inch. It’s not discolored at all. I have a ton of tests regularly, and had a brainscan just today to check on other symptoms (balance issues, memory lapses). I forgot to mention the dent, but when I talk to the doctor again in a couple of days, I’ll let you know if he comes up with any answers (or not).

I’m a 21-year-old college student, female, with near-perfect health [an annual cold, no more no less], and I just found a dent slightly to the left on top of my head today. It clearly wasn’t there yesterday! It’s disconcerting to see so many people with this problem and so few answers from the medical community. I have no headaches or anything of that ilk, but I AM getting over a cold that my room mates passed onto me, so I currently have rather congested sinuses. Thanks to commentors for all the information and links… I hope that some doctor gets their act together soon and lets one of us know what’s what-!

Well, well, well, I have had two indentations above either side of my forehead for as long as I can remember. I have never come across anyone anywhere that has these indentations in the same place. Mine are always there and are about 3mm in depth, not noticeable unless you were looking for them. I have only pointed them out to a few people before and when they have felt them, they have become quite freaked out. They are almost as if I have had horns and they were removed (this is no joke), if you were to actually place your fingers in either side in the center of the indentations, at the center you can actually feel what feels like a four way split (+) similar to a plus symbol.
I am now married and have been for the past three years and my wife still gets freaked out by it.

You know, I posted a few weeks ago regarding the “dents” I had. I realized that the dents are right where my sunglasses sit on the top of my head. In the morning, the dents are very much reduced, and If I dont sit my sunglasses on the top of my head, then they are gone, but it takes just a short period of time for the small weight of my glasses to create the dents again if I slide my glasses to the top of my head. I remove the glasses and they go away. I dunno??? Go figure that sunglasses would do something like that!

I just want to let you know that I have lived with two dents on my forehead…one is from the hairline that goes vertical towards the inbetween section of my eyebrow and the other is on the left side just above my left eyebrow. Explanation to relieve some of you is that there could be an underlying cause – a possible malformation within the brain that causes this. You may want to get a second opinion for them as I did and found a malformation that was treated.

Hi,
I always had a dent in my forehead but recently I woke up with an eraser tipped sized indentation on the area just above my temples.. It has happened quite afew times and usyualy disappears within 3 hours. any help?
October 18th, 2007 at 12:58 am
This sunglasses on the head idea might have some merit! The dents are about the same distance apart as the lenses, are there generally in the evening after a day of out and about with sunnies sitting right there in that spot.
Though the stress idea also has merit. Like may before, I hope someone with medical credentials takes a look at this page and gives some authoritative input to the issue, hopefully to put to rest some of the concerns.

I have had an indentation on my scalp for a long time and a sore that won’t heal close to it. I found out I have skin cancer. I am having MOH’s surgery and then a skin graft by a plastic surgeon. Then I have to have tissue expanders after that. The plastic surgeon told me there is a possibility that the cancer is in the bone underneath the scalp which would require a neurosurgeon to take some bone (possibly from a rib to replace the cancerous bone). Has anyone else had the same thing?
October 21st, 2007 at 9:24 am
Ok, so i’m not sure if i feel better or worse after reading these. I noticed the dents a couple of weeks ago. it starts right behind my hairline, and goes back about three inches, just to the right side of the center, so not really inline with a coronal suture. I have been worried about this, but have no medical insurance, and feel very stressed about it. I too notice the dent to get “deeper” later in the day, and a second small dent now forming to the left side of the center. I don’t really have headaches that coincide with it, no do i have tenderness, itchiness, or hair loss. i don’t know…. i guess i better just go to the dr.s. i’ll post back if i learn anything… my best wishes to all of you and your families. please be sure to keep us updated, i feel for each of you. -Kathleen

Hi,
I too have recently found a dent in my skull which runs from the hairline, slightly off centre, towards the back of my head. My sister was more freaked out than me but went to the doctors anyway to have it checked out. He stated that it was fatty tissue!!! Did not think that this could be correct and felt like I was being fobbed off, especially when he said ‘It’s ok you don’t have cancer!’ Very insensitive of him as my sister is teminally ill with cancer. I also have sharp pains in my head from time to time. I am going to keep my eye on things and if it gets any bigger, or if more appear, then I am back for a second opinion.

This is so crazy! I couldn’t believe that I couldn’t find anything about this online. I just found a dent three nights ago on the left side of my head right behind my hairline. I do get headaches often, and have been under extreme stress for the past two years! My mom was had a tumor and had to have surgery 1 1/2 years ago. I am so worried that I have the same thing! I went to the doctors yesterday and they sent me for a x~ray. I have not heard anything yet, and it is very hard to get through the day not knowing what is wrong with my head! :( My head in that spot feels like it is tingling. I wish SOMEONE on here had some type of answer. I also can’t believe that SO many people have not gone to the doctors! I hope all is well with everyone!

I have noticed recently that I have two dents – one on each side of my skull, they appear to be in line with the arms of my glasses, which I need to wear all the time, and the area above seems spongy. Occasionally I also experience a sort of buzzing sensation as well as a odd sense of external pressure, which may not be related. I’m wondering we may have some other link, such as exposure to particular chemical, a common drug or even lifestyle activity, who knows there may be a really simple explanation for this. Have the people who have seen a doctor already been diagnosed with anything specific or is it a total mystery? The only drug I take regularly is Ibuprofen for headaches, it also contains a small amount of codeine – oh and caffeine. Any thoughts?

In the past few months, I have been noticing dents on my skull that have been very worrisome. My husband didn’t believe me that my skull had changing dents, so it’s a big relief to find a site where there are people like me! I am going to the doctor to have him take a look, but hopefully they are nothing. Has anyone with these dents been diagnosed but the doctor? Very curious to know what might be causing these dents.
November 8th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Hi all,
This is my second post since October. Well, the good news is that we’re not all crazy. My doctor has told me that most dents are absolutely NORMAL. Now that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get yours looked at just to make sure. I, for one, am very relieved. Hope you are too.
Take good care.
November 13th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
I also noticed dents in my skull. I wear reading glasses and when I am not reading, they sit on the top of my head. I keep them there like a headband and pull them down when I need to read. The little nose protectors on the eyeglasses sits on my skull right where I have these dents. I am wondering if, over the course of 7 years of wearing my glasses on top of my head everyday, that this has caused these dents… much like a night time retainer will gradually shift your teeth???

I’m a 22 year old female and I have a deep, painful, indention that showed up about 3-4 months ago along my sagittal suture at the crown of my head. I’ve had alopecia for 3 years now with no luck from any doctors or dermatologists. All blood work is normal(including my thyroid). I’m finally going to see an endocrinologist next month and I’ll show him the dent as well, since someone had mentioned it could be hormonal. We will see! But from the sound of it, I imagine he’ll say something like “it’s completely normal”. I’ll let ya know how it goes. I promise. Even if no one reads this anymore! haha.

I just recently found a indent on the top of my head about 3 inches long going from the front to the back. Therefore, I scheduled a doctor’s appointment just to be at ease that it wasn’t anything. When I try to move my scalp, the indent moves with my scalp. I let the doctor check it out and he said it’s not your skull, it feels like the tissue is just thinner for some reason. So I got an x-ray done of my skull & everything is okay with my skull. He said everything’s okay & that I don’t have to worry myself to death. He said it’s probably from a childhood injury which I did have when I was 6 years old. He said I have probably had the dent all my life, but I just recently noticed it though. Therefore, if you have an indent in your head, it’s probably nothing at all; however you should still see a doctor just to ease your mind. Good luck & may God bless you!

I just looked up head dents, and found this blog. So glad that others are concerned. I tend to think of the glasses I have been wearing on my head after reading this blog as the culprit, and possibly also stress the last year. Glad to see others posts on this site to know I am not the only one!

Hi Everybody. This is where I belong I guess among my denthead tribe! I am a 25 year old male and I also have two dents in my skull that start about an inch back from my hair line and run vertically from almost the top of my ear to about 2.5 to 3 inches up. The dent (ridge my girlfriend calls it) appears the same on the opposite side of my head, identically almost. I DO NOT wear glasses so I know thats not the cause. I’ve had these for a little while I suppose, I’ve only really noticed them since my last year of college. Kinda freaky, but you all bring me comfort. I’m not alone!!!

I ALSO JUST FELT THIS INDENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE ON TOP OF MY HEAD. I AM A NERVOUS WRECK ANYWAY, AND THEN THIS HAS MADE ME GO, OH —-, WHAT NOW. I AM SO SICK OF GOING TO DOCTORS, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO HELP WITH ANYTHING. I HAVE FELT SO TERRIBLE FOR SO LONG THAT I HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT IT IS LIKE TO FEEL GOOD. ONE DR. HERE RUINED MY STOMACH, BEFORE THAT WHILE GETTING A CT SCAN, THE TECH MADE ME GET UP ONTO A HIGHER TABLE AND IN DOING SO I GOT TWO HERNIATED DISKS, AND A RIP IN MY SPINE WHERE IT BLEED INTO MY SPINAL COLUMN. THE NEXT MORNING MY LEGS AND FEET WERE NUMB AND I HAVE BEEN A MESS EVER SINCE. I HAVE BEEN X-RAYED, MRI”ED AND CTED TO DEATH. I AM IN CONTANT PAIN AND I CAN NOT TAKE MANY MEDS AS I AM SENSITIVE TO MOST OF THEM. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE ALL OF YOU WITH THESE INDENTS ALSO, AND I HOPE ALL OF YOU AND MYSELF WILL BE OKAY. GOD BLESS, DAWN

Wow. I just googled indentation in forehead and found this, hoping to find something out and I stumbled upon this. I’m a 19 year old male and I just found an indentation, probably 2 cm long, that goes from the top of my right eyebrow to my hairline. I just noticed it today, I don’t know its been there or if it just appeared. I’m thinking that maybe these indentations have something to do with stress? I have exams coming up. I’ve never noticed an indentation like this before. If anyone finds anything out, please post.

I just found this blog and I hope to get some answers – particularly from Rich who posted on December 8. What did you find out from the doctor? I am a 32 year old healthy female and just recently noticed an indentation running vertically from the inside of my left eyebrow – upwards at an angle to the left. It is about the size of a fingertip. I noticed this after 2 months of a sinus infection, and recently asked my ENT about it – he had no idea what it could be. If anyone else has a similar indentation in their forehead (not visible, but you can definitely feel it), please let me know!

Wow what a great place for us dent heads to compare notes…. I’m 50 and have had a 3 inch circular dent in what is normally the soft spot when you are a baby… I figured it was just the way the soft spot formed,,, However, all three of my daughters have smaller but deeper dents in the same general area…probably about 1 inch by 1/4 inch wide and a 1/8 inch deep… I figured it is just hereditary, but they are concerned because their dents get tender at times … My spot has never been tender, but it is balding… We are all in relatively good health …..
Seems like only a few of you have dents in the same area as ours and most of you seem to have two dents on the sides related to wearing glasses on your head.
Anyway, we will monitor this site…for answers if there are any…Meanwhile, I want to encrourage all dent heads to unite!!!!
January 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 am
like everyone else I was shocked to find there are so many others with dented heads! I first noticed mine at the soft spot of my head last March and it seems to be growing and just under it to the left I have a new one forming. My fam doc says its the muscles in my head (i have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and anxiety/depression). The spots burn sometimes and are tender to the touch and often give me headaches if touched too much, so this seems to be a good diagnosis! I have not had and x-rays of my head or anything. I still get worried sometimes that these spots could be more because of some other symptoms I sometimes have, but who knows. I hope this helps!

Hello All, Guess it’s my turn. After using the bathroom last night, I was washing my hands when I looked in the mirror and saw a dark indentation approx 3 inches long in the center of my forehead. It wasn’t noticeable this morning. I will keep checking it nightly. I have not had any headaches or other symptoms. It is very odd to look in the mirror and see this indentation. I can understand everyone’s concern.

So I discovered this dent in my head tonight and I’m thinking – Oh great, what now? After 43 years with this skull I would have noticed if it had been there for a long time. After reading through about 1 and 1/2 years of postings I came upon the one where she figured out that the dent (s) correspond with the noseguards on her sunglasses. Guess what? I wear sunglasses all year round and have long been teased by my husband for leaving them on the top of my head (often for hours) when indoors. I checked and my sunglasses fit the dent very nicely and led me to discover a smaller dent on the other side to match. So thanks to that sharp observation I will not be stressing about skull cancer in an otherwise more-or-less healthy body. For those of you have discovered sunglasses dents my thought is this: is there some underlying factor that would seem to soften the skull so that a lifelong habit of wearing glasses on the head would suddenly result in these dents? Age? (I’m 43) Stress? (Enormous over the past 5 years). Anybody have any thoughts in this vein?

Hi, I have a daughter who turned five yesterday, we are leaving in the morn. to go to the childrens hosp. My dd lost some of her hair(were a baby’s bald spot is) there is a line going down but the circle of hair loss is indented. They thought she had alopecia but they are leaning toward morphia, localized sceloderma. I hope we find out soon, this is so stressfull. If any one had anything similar with the hair loss please help me. Thanks.

ANSWERS TO INDENTS IN SKULL
I may have an answer for some of you. About 2 months ago my 49 year old mother noticed 2 indentations in her skull, starting right behind her hair line. These indents were about a 1/2 inch wide and traveled toward the back of her head approx. 3 inches. She also had some seemingly unrelated symptoms which were aching and burning in her feet and toes, weakness/tiredness, and feeling cold almost all the time. She saw her Dr. for these symptoms and he tested her for iron deficiency. The test came back positive and he put her on iron pills about a month ago. A week after starting the treatment, her symptoms began to subside and one month later they have completely disappeared. Today she noticed that her strange skull indentations have also began to disappear, they have gotten smaller in size and have become more shallow in depth. I hope this will be helpful those who may have the same iron deficiency, have your Dr. order some blood work, it might be as simple as just taking an iron supplement. Lisa

I’m 39 and noticed two ridges or dents running parallel just above my hairline. I showed my Doctor and he could not explain it. He sent me for a CT Scan of the head. The results were normal. Come to find out after living with these “dents” for four (4) months—It was my damn sun-glasses resting on my head. The dents are still there even after not resting my sunglasses on my head. My Doctor agreed and laughed. He would have never figured it out!! So relax and take in to account what I said?

Wow! I too just noticed two dents in my forehead and one in the back of the top of my head. is scary as I am 51 and feel it could be anything. I am going to have my Dr. check it out, but hope he says it is nothing as most of you have said. Don’t understand how they all of a sudden appear. They seem to be the same all the time. No headache other than once in awhile which is normal. Today I noticed the new one in the center of my forehead. I will let you know what my Dr. says. Glad to hear I am not alone.

Hey, we went to the childrens hosp, they believe she has morphia,( localized linear sceloderma) I know that it is spelled wrong. They sent her for a biopsy, MRI, and alot of blood work. This can be very serious, it can come up in any place of her body. The treatment is very scary, they have to get it in remission for the years that it is active. They siad they would use chemo(metotrexrate) 3 days every month, for 3 months. I would also have to give her steroid injections every day for 2 years. This seems so unreal, I feel like I am in a nightmare. Sorry for all the misspellings, I will keep you updated.

Hi All,
I have recently discovered an indentation in my scull on the right side. I too always wear sunglesses on my head, but i do not beleive that this wold leave dentas on my skull, they are not that heavy!
I do plan to go to the doctor about it and get him to check it out, seems strange that no-one knows what it is when so many people seem to be affected.
I also have hair loss, but i have a 7 month old baby, and have suffered hair loss after all my babies, but not usually for so long. Maybe it is hormome related??
Shannon, i hope you find out what is going on with your daughter, please keep us updated. My thought are with you xxx

Ugh!! I AM SO glad to find an article about this. This has been bothering me for the past 3 years now! I am terrified because I am only 21..and I have this dent in the middle of my head that is sore, oh so bad! :( I have to lay off of certain hairstyles because I don’t want anything tuggin or pulling my hair where the dent is. Very painful at times, and it’s the first place I noticed my hair may have a sweaty stinch although I wash my hair all the time! I am so worried.. glad to know there is other people who understand where I am coming from! It is in the middle of my crown, and I could slide my finger thru it like if it was a key to a slot. It is weird feeling.! I am planning on going to the doctor to find out! :( As for me, it is very painful!

Hi, we got her results yesterday. My daughter has localized sceloderma. The brain scan showed 2 places that has fat lost, so hopefully we got it in time. There is no cure, but there is treatment. We are going next week to meet with them. I has mis understood them, the last time we were there. She will be on methotraxate for 2 years, a injection once a week, and for the first 3 months she will have a high dose of steriod by Iv for 3 days every month for 3 months. We are very scared of this but there is a sense of relif that we atleast know what this monster is. I pray to god that my baby well get some help, this is a nightmare. I just cant imagine what the future weeks old in sight. Please pray for my family and my child. Thanks, Shannon

Hey Yall,
I’m 25 years old and for years now had hair loss, change of hair texture, fatigue, weight gain, depression, and now DENTS IN MY SCULL AND HEADACHES. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!!!! Dr’s keep telling me they find nothing wrong. I am a mother of two and just want some answers
February 8th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
OK – I am another one. I have been noticing a linear dent in my skull for a while (starting at about the hairline on the left side of my forehead and running backwards at an angle) – and I too believe I would have noticed it in the past at some time if it had always been there. Now recently I have been noticing more linear dents in other places. There is another one not quite as deep on the other side of my forehead, a long one running from above my right ear up to the top of my head, and the same thing on the left side but not as deep, and even some dents near the top, back of my head. It seems the ones above my ears are in the area one would expect bones of the skull to come together (called sutures). I haven’t been especially worried about the dents, perhaps because I had an MRI of my brain about 2 years ago to rule out MS due to some skin sensation symptoms and family history – the MRI was normal. But tonight I was noticing the dents again and decided to see if there was anything I could learn about the cause. Because so many of us seem to have similar dents and most of us are fairly healthy, it seems to me that they must be just a variation of normal in most cases. I am 55 years old, female, with no serious health problems (don’t even have high blood pressure or high cholesterol). I do have headaches fairly often, which I have finally figured out really were migraines (no aura or nausea) rather than sinus headaches. I have taken ibuprofen a lot because of the headaches. I also take Evista to prevent osteoporosis, and I take a multivitimin pill. I don’t believe that any blows to my head could have caused all these dents, and I don’t belive that I am under more than a normal amount of stress. I don’t wear my glasses on top of my head and I have always had a very thick head of hair. I think that I do tend to run a little low on iron at times. I don’t get sick very often and I can go at a good clip on the eliptical crosstrainer at the gym for an hour. I am a nurse and I learned that bone is living tissue that is constantly being remodeled, so it seems that the skull is reshaping itself for some reason. These dents are curious, especially since they seem to come out of nowhere, and I would have thought that maybe they had something to do with aging if so many young people had not also discovered them. It is also funny that most doctors don’t know what to make of them. I wonder if it is a genetic thing – some of us just have genes that make our skulls form dents – but maybe there is some environmental factor also. It would be interesting to do a scientific study to discover exactly what percentage of the population do develop these dents. Anyway, I think those people who have the dents but no other symptoms or health issues probably don’t need to lose sleep over it – maybe just mention it to your doctor when you have a check-up.

Just an update: (First posted June 2007) As it was the Summer when I first noticed these dents, I have to agree with some of the posts on here, that I wear my sunglasses on top of my head nearly all Summer too….now it’s Winter, the dents seem to have gone! Odd but true. I shall keep an eye on the situation once I start wearing my glasses again, but it may be something as simple as that!
February 16th, 2008 at 11:11 am
I went through a similar situation. I would get this dent/trough about an inch long by 1/4″ and 1/8″ deep on the top of my head just a little off center to the right. It would just show up one day and be gone when I woke up the next day. This went on for about 8 months and 2 visits to the doctor. I found out what it was when I switched from a pair of sunglasses that were metal/glass and had the normal nose pieces to a set of plastic Oakleys with a rubber nosepiece. After switching, I never noticed the dent ever again. In my case, it absolutely was the sunglasses. I had no headaches or pain localized at the dent, though. Just thought I’d add. Thanks.

I am 48yrs and have been unwell for 17mths now. Diagnosed with seronegative spoldyloarthropathy, but my 13yr old son was ill with same symptoms same week. He got better I didn’t. Felt sure it was a virus and have opted for homeopathic treatment as steroids and anti-inflammatories didn’t work. At the same time I noticed a painless dent ,like a fontanelle but to the right of centre, dr said I’d probably always had it but if you lean on your head “in thought” your finger falls into the dent and I’m sure I would have noticed this earlier in my then 47yrs! Had skull xrays- normal. Was interested in the stress theory as I have been under a great deal of stress. Reassuring to know there are orthers out there with the same mysterious dents!

Thanks Shannon for sharing your daughter’s story and the website. I will keep your daughter and family in my prayers. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the heartache and emotions your feeling since your daughter’s diagnosis. As mother’s we know to protect our child at all costs from predators. When the predator is a life-threatening disease we feel helpless and alone. Please know there are caring folks here that you can talk at any time. May God bless, comfort and heal your child.

me too, dents weren’t there like 2 months ago.
i wonder if it is water retention. anybody ever hear that as a possibility? like maybe it is a localized and uneven manifestation of water retention under the scalp but on top of the scull itself??

Hello,
I recently discovered a dent on the top of my head, right in the center. I delivered my baby 12 weeks ago and have been having headaches, dizziness and off balance feeling ever since. My nuerologist thinks it’s just migraines and prescribed me a pain relief, as well as a preventative. However I don’t take them. I had an MRI in February, came back normal. My mother had a anurisym of the brain when she was 36 and I remember her doctor telling me it could be hereditary. Other docs tell me no. Anyway, the off balance feeling (like on a boat) was constant and I went to the doctor again. They found both of my ears red and prescribed me antibiotics. I was relieved that I may have ear infections because I have no idea what’ going on. I just completed the antibiotic and I’m still feeling the very same way. This is very scary and if anyone has any answers, please let me know. Thank you.

About a week ago I was playing with my hair & noticed a soft spot (indent) on the top of my head. I thought it was nothing, but I am constantly getting migrains/headaches. I went to the ER last night, they did an MRI but was only able to see the indent, they couldn’t tell me why/how it got there. I am sch with a neurologist in like a month, but 3 of the 3 dr’s I have spoken to say it is poss a tumor. So, now my blood pressure is on the rise and I am scared to death, but am waiting on my primary care dr to return my call with the images from last nights ER visit. I have heard from several dr’s that it is ok to have these indents on the back of the head, however not on the top and sides of the head, as this is where your brain rests. Good luck to everyone on here.

Hi,
has anyone experienced any type of numbness? My left pinky started twitching slightly about 7 years ago. Went to the Dr., and of course nothing found.
I experienced several TIA’s a couple of years ago and all they could find was an abnormally small carotoid leading to my brain (hence the cause – “let’s put the gal on blood thinners”). About three months ago my left elbow starting feeling like it was 1 minute after I hit my funny bone. You know when you hit your funny bone and your arm gets freaky? Well that’s what I feel all the time.
Two months ago I developed my first ridge, it runs straight from hairline (positioned above my right eye closest to my nose) and back about 3.5 – 4 inches. In the last month I developed a “twin” about half an inch over (towards the outer part of my right eye). My right eye feels very “tired”.
Anyone have any ideas? I have a Dr.’s appt. scheduled for this coming up Monday, but after FINALLY telling my lover about it she asked if I’d looked on the internet. So here I am.
Any thoughts?

I noticed I had 2 dents in my head too. They run paralel to each other and it as one of you described feels like there is a spine in the middle. I noticed it a few month after I had given birth to my daughter who is now 15months old. I went to the Dr about it and she had never seen anything like it before and sent me for an X-ray which came back all clear. I have never gone back. I also thought maybe it is from my Sun Glasses as I always wear them on my head as the groove of my sunnies sits exactly where the dents are. I have also noticed that when I wake up in the morning the dents are not too bad, but by the end of the day the dents are really deep. It sounds like it must be normal, as so many of us have them.

Hello all- I don’t know what to think about my dents after reading all the posts. I wish my dent was caused by sunglasses, but I know it isn’t because it is back further- center of the crown, like where alot of people have a cowlick. Mine is getting pretty big, seems to be growing from front to back, and I noticed it months ago. there isn’t any pain, but still worrisome. Does anyone else have their dent where mine is? It seems most are near their hairline or on the sides. I have had alot of stress over the last few years. And I found out a few months ago that I have a vitamin B definciency and have monthly shots for that condition. I am 35 years old and have 3 kids, youngest just turned 3. Anyone gone to the doctor for dent in same place?
April 25th, 2008 at 3:01 am
Hi there Shauna. I have a dent in the same place. About a year ago or so I asked my doctor about it and he said it was sort of like a soft spot. He is normally on top of things and ordering tests just to make sure. I am still concerned about mine because I have been getting dizzy and having head pains and ear problems so I will be going to see him about it soon. I’ll let you know what he says. good luck.
April 30th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Okay…a bump and dent head here.
I have a physician’s appt., but not until the middle of May. I have one dent top right of my head. I have a goose egg and sometimes several at random areas of my scalp…they come and go.
Also, have experienced hair loss for about 1 1/2 years…it also waxes and wanes.
I also have an itchy neck under each jaw, high up, not near the shoulders…sort of near where the parathyroids are under the jaw line.
I used minoxidil for hair loss, ended up with seborrheic dermatitis after prolonged use and stopped it. But am always in my scalp with meds (topical steroids) from my dermatologist who says stress and hormone activity is causing the hair loss and the bumps.
Discovered the dent about 2-3 weeks ago. Now I have an appt. with a new family doctor who I will tell and then an endocrinologist (hormones).
I’ve also experienced hypothyroid symptoms (including the hair loss) but normal thyroid blood studies.
It’s really pretty frustrating to keep being told you are fine when you know something is wrong.
My heart and prayers go out to the ones who have had diagnosed illness related to their depressed skull problems. Hope all goes well.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Wow! This is all so interesting. I finally googled this topic after I found dent on top of my head to the right of the midline. I also pull and play with my hair alot and have a lot of stress. The reason I was so concerned with the dents is because my grandmother has the same things and she has alzheimers. I have this fear that this may be an early indicator of alzheimers. I fully believe alzheimers is heriditary and I fear that I may wind up like her. I’m not sure what age she was when she noticed her dents. She didn’t mention them to me until her late 60’s to early 70’s. I’m only 32. Anyone else have any thoughts on this theory? I have had MRI’s due to migraines and they were normal. Any thoughts?
May 8th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Thanks for reply Brandy- that you have dent in the same place, I would love to hear what you are told about it! Some people think these are related to stress and hormones- but I haven’t went to the doctor yet. I know I should! The last baby i had was 3 years ago- for those whose are related to pregnancy, but It’s wierd that she is my only one who is soothed by playing with my hair! that is her pacifier and helps her sleep- she always wants to play with my hair when she’s tired- but It would be really strange if that could cause a dent! and some people say theirs comes and goes, mine doesn’t – it is always there. I haven’t noticed problems with my ears yet, but I have gotten more headaches lately- not too bad though. And to Meike- my grandfather had alzhiemer’s but don’t know about him having any dents- he passed on about 3 years ago.

I have two mirrored indents, one theleft and right central area of my brain near the central sulcus. I’m not sure if i have had them before, i never recalled feeling them or seeing them there when i have on occasion worn very short hair. other people have felt the indents and said they seemed deep and said they don’t have them themselves. what i don;t understand is, if it’s not from impact or trepannation , presumably i would be aware or be made aware of these incidents the skull doesn;t just warp or bend, does it?.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
i just googled skull indents, and came up to this site i noticed the indent in my head about a week ago wiothin the last year i have had alot of stress and within the last six months alot of headache and migraines. My dent is goes from the front of my forehead back about 3 inches i am concerned. I find it highly unlikely that is has been there a long time as i have long hair and constantly rub the top of my head. I don’t recall hitting my head or having any injury in the past. I will be going to get checked out.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I was cutting down a dead Oak last week and never saw the limb that clocked me. It was 2.5 inches diameter and 8′ long. It hit me just inside my hair line on the left side of my head. It staggered me and left me woozie for a couple of minutes, but I went right back to work – with my neck hurting more than the head. For a week now there has been so much discomfort I didn’t mess with the spot, but now I can touch it and there is a dent about the size of a quarter in my skull. I was a bit worried until I read all of the folks who have similar dents – I think I’ll skip the MD for now…and wait to see if the headaches subside.
May 21st, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I finally google “skull dent” after 2 or 3 years of wondering what these dents in my head cold be! It does make me feel better to see that I’m not the only one with this…my boyfriend started calling me conehead thinking it was funny but I was seriously worried…Mine do seem to match my sunglasses, so thats a relief but recently I’ve noticed that when I wear hats, my head bothers me too and I get a kinf of warm tingly feeling in my head…anyone else?
May 26th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
I, too, was very worried because I found 2 indentations about 2 in. long on each of the
mid-line of my skull. The doctor did blood work twice and ordered head x-rays which
were inconclusive. She then ordered a full body bone scan. I was injected with a radioactive
material and then had to wait 3 hrs. for the bone scan. Results came back normal. The
doctor said that if there had been anything abnormal in the skull area (or any other bones
in my body), they would have lit up like a Christmas tree. Hope this helps relieve some
of your worry about your skull indentations. I suspect that they might be caused by me
wearing my glasses on my head when I am not using them because I also found 2 small
indentations behind my ears where my glasses sit.
May 27th, 2008 at 6:57 am
I am so glad to find this site. I too have been searching the web for answers. My dent runs just to the left of the midline of my skull behind the hairline and runs back about 3 inches. I can put 4 fingertips in it. It doesn’t follow the pattern of where my sunglasses fit, but runs vertically rather than horizontally across my skull. I am a 38yo female in good health with no other symptoms. I noticed the dent back in February, but with no other symptoms have not been to the MD. Now I am growing more concerned and am planning a doctor visit. I look foward to reading any answers anyone has, please keep posting. Getting worried!!!

Hello,I too have dents on top my head i noticed them this morning.I have associated mine with my sunglasses. dont know if this is normal but was releived to have been able to read similar stories.hope its nothing serious
May 29th, 2008 at 5:26 am
I also noticed an indentation on the right front side of my head. It seems to be where one of the sutres are. I only noticed it last night and I’m sure it was not there earlier, because I constantly rub my head, mess with my hair etc. perhaps from nerves. This morning it had shrunk in width and length. I’m freaked. I could only find this blog when searching. Anyone know if it has to do with brain swelling? That’s my natural assumption.

About 5 months ago I noticed something small in my head… I thought nothing of it. (towards the back in the dead center, a little below where a babys soft spot is) About a month later I started getting headaches, feeling groggy constantly, tired, my eyes ache, and my ears hurt. As of today the “something” in my head is now about 3 inches long and about 1/4 inch deep and about an inch wide! and all of the symptoms are awful! So bad Im taking many many pain medications a day! Ive got an appt tomorrow, thank god. Im scared outa my mind. It shocked me when i googled this “something” and found NO real diagnosis! That just makes it even more scarier! Like some unknown mystery killer disease! And they will figure it out after something really bad happens! I wish someone knew! :(

Like many of you, I also found this site after googling about a dent in my head. I actually have two different situations. The first, as many of you describe, are two parellel “ridges” that begin just behind my hairline and go about 3″ to the back of my head. The second is a bigger dent right in the very center of my crown like if you stand up straight and draw a line from the top of your head through your jaw. I am for the most part healthy, get soar throats every now and then and the occasional cold. I am very very thin, though. At 24 years old I stand 5′2″ and am about 92lbs. I also had a baby who is 20 months old and after having her lost a lot of weight and a lot of hair. Since then my hair has grown back, but the weight is gone. As some of you have mentioned I also suffer from anxiety and stress related disorders. I am prescribed Xanax for the anxiety but never take it. I first noticed the dents in my head about 2 months ago. I was playing with my hair one night and almost had a panic attack. My husband always jokes and pokes fun that I have “creeping death” because I am some what of a hypochondrizc. I constantly think there is something wrong with me…but there is no way I am making up the dents in my skull. Occasionally I will have some pain there or my head will hurt when I brush my hair. Anyone else feel that? Also…I have a few small bumps on my head. The bumps are about the size or smaller than a pencil eraser. They have been around for longer than the dents. I went to the doctor to check out both of these weird things. The doctor said that the dent in the back of my head and sides is just from my skull growing and changing (who woulda though you grew at 24) and that the smaller bumps were cists? He said that I could have them biopsied if I wanted but they were probably nothing to worry about since they weren’t growing any bigger and they weren’t painful. Does anyone else have these “cists” on their head as well?
I am really glad to have found this site…but still feel as though we all deserve and answer. It is scary to see that some of you have serious results concerning dents and others, like me, have been told they are nothing to worry about. As someone else said, though, if so many people are on here about the dents, then it probably is just normal. I feel that I can best relate to the stress and anxiety and I am going to ask my new doctor about it at my next appt.
Thank you all for sharing and hopefully we get answers soon enough. If I learn anything new I will post it here. Good luck and best wishes to those of you who are facing serious problems.
PS…I do not wear my sunglasses on my head
PPS…I do have a virus for the person who asked about viruses…nothing serious though.
June 24th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Everyone seems to have these dents on top of their head. Mine is on the back of my head about 2 inches above my neck, above my hairline. I have seen 3 ER doctors and they all say its the shape of my skull. Well I never noticed it before and I am 41 ears old. It doesn’t hurt, sometimes tender. Have you ever seen a fat ,bald man with a crease in his head,? well it feels like that. And it’s freaking me out.
June 28th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
i to have found a dent in my head i also have headaches please could some one tell me what this is
June 30th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Hi folks delighted i found this page. Although i think we’re dealin with a few different problems and there are a lot of diferent symptoms. As for the childhood injury i suffered a severe concusion when i was 4 or 5 i fell in the street and as i hit the deck a cyclist ran over my skull. I was rushed to hospital you could even see the tire track. Anyway the doctors said as i was so young my skull was still soft and absorbed much of the trauma, if i had been any older it could have resulted in a severe skull fracture or brain injury. Moving on to now i shaved my head a few years ago and noticed a 1 inch depressed dint about 2 inches long on the left side of my skull behind my hairline and on the opposite side a raised bump and a 5 inch long ridge of bone just of the centre of my skull running from the middle section to the crown. I always suffered head aches but they have increased as i’ve gotten older and as your skull doesnt finish forming completely until your 40’s i’m worried these head aches will increase in verocity. I’m also very uncomfortable with the shape of my head as i’m sure like my father i’ll loose my hair. Does anyone know is their surgery i can have to raise the dent or re set the growth plates in your skull to their normal lines. I’m going for a ct scan to see if the depressed dent is causing the head aches as i cant handle them getting any worse. Thanks to all for their posts.

I think I can help many of you, as well as ease your concerns! First of all, skulls differ from person to person and rarely are perfectly smooth. The art of phrenology (reading the lumps, bumps and dents on people’s heads similar to the way some people read palms) would never have existed if people all had nice smooth heads. Beneath the scalp is a layer of fibrous tissue and fat. As you age, or if you diet and lose weight, this layer of fat becomes thinner. Also as you age, or go through certain hormonal changes, hair often becomes thinner. That is why dents and bumps seem to “suddenly” appear. There no longer is a layer of fat (or hair) covering them, so suddenly, even though they more than likely have been there most (or all) of your life, you can feel them when you touch your scalp. To test the thickness of your scalp, try to pinch a section of it on the top of the back of your head. If you can’t, then your scalp is thin. Also, many of you mentioned that you had tingling or burning scalps, or even headaches. Odds are that since you’ve found the dents, you have been touching them and feeling them frequently. The scalp is rich with nerve endings, so if you irritate them with constant touching, you can end up with tingling, burning, and even headaches. Many of you stated that the dents appear and disappear. This could be due to weight flucuations. When you are heavier, the dents will be more difficult to feel and therefore seem to disappear. When you are thinner, they will seemingly pop out again because the layer of fat covering them is not as thick. And lastly, if you have two matching dents on your head, that is a sure indication that they are simply part of the symmetrical shape of your skull. I hope this helps!

Show of hands… How many of the people posting here use cell phones???
July 5th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
I believe I can answer to all of us who have head dents. You would not remember being abducted by aliens but the proof is in the pudding. The dents in our heads are due to the testing process done by the aliens. You may or may not have even the slightest memory of being abducted. It often happens in the night when you are sleeping. If you have more than one then you have been taken more than once. They come back and do more test on us as they see fit. Our memories of this is always erased but for some people, they have the feeling of having something happen to them but pass it on as if it were maybe just a dream.
I have a couple of these indentations and I too looked up to see what they all meant and have found a couple of sites that talk about the alien abductions. I don’t have the web sites as I have a hard time dealing with such an issue but try to remember when this first showed up and try to remember if there was anything unusual that may have happened or that you feel may have happened to you around the same time. It is thinning of a bone because they take a piece out of your head for studies.
Sorry to dump this stuff on you but seeing as so many people are noticing it, it all makes perfect sense. Doctors don’t know what to think of it so they just tell you it’s normal and everyone’s heads are diffenent. Could be……………….
July 7th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
First of all…Sally, thank you! After reading your post I have found myself at ease realizing that what you said makes complete sense. I can’t speak for anyone else but what the information you psoted pretty much matches my situation exactly. So again, thank you.
Now….Claudette….are you out of your freakin mind? No, seriously, you are joking right? I mean here we all are trying to get some answers for problems that we all have in common and here you come with this alien garbage. Don’t get me wrong, I am not so closed minded that I think we are alone in this vast infinite universe…but for real? Aliens? I’d like to know what the mom of that little girl thinks about all of this. There truley is a time and place for everything. I don’t believe this is the right forum to be debating the whole “alien abduction” theory. Thanks for sharing, though. And you might want to get your noggin checked…
July 8th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Hi kb,
You are right. I should get my noggin checked out. I don’t know anything of the such. I just reported what I’ve read on websites that may or may not be crap. I do believe that people need to be checked out by their doctors and I am very sorry for the apparent scare I may have caused anyone. I believe there are other life forces here with us but do I know it to be factual? No, I do not. I should not have reported this on this site as I too have looked into my indentation problem and that’s where I found the information I supplied. It was late at night and I just did it. How foolish of me. Please accept my apologies for doing the “wrong” thing. I am very sorry. I apologize to the families who read my comments as well. We should all see a doctor if there is ever anyting out of the usual with our bodies and never give up. I see way too often where patients don’t dare speak up and just walk away thinking “the doctor must know” but they really don’t always know. It’s a physicians practice………….?????? Never give up when you know in your gut, it’s something they can’t find. Seek another opinion, and another, and another, till you get your answer.
I’m not rushing into my doctor just yet but if they get bigger I will and I will for sure mention them to my doc on my next appointment.
Thanks for speaking up kb, I deserved it.
Much luck and success to all of you.
If I ever do find out what mine is all about I will certainly post it and if I find something on the internet that might help besides what I had posted I will put it up as well. I will see about having that post removed.
Sincerely,
Claudette

For you brothers and sisters who have been marked recently with the sign that will begin the end of this existance as we know it. Look at the dates above. This is happening right now. We are the chosen few who carry that mark as an ancient reminder of what is about to happen. Though our heritage may have been forgotten through the years, we our all descendants of a race of energy and spirit that have been almost bred to extincation. Be very happy that you are still able to carry this mark. If your mark is on the forehead at the hairline then you will be contacted soon. For those of you who have dents, or ridges on the top and back of your head. You do not descend from the chosen. For those of you who have listened to the ringing in your ears and understood its message. You already know what is happening to our planet. For those of you who cannot understand the ringing, you will be spoken to in your dreams, slowly at first and eventually it will be every night. Do not fear. These are messages of love and they speak of our eternal existence so you can understand just how deceptive this existence can be. We our not really here in this form. You may be able to understand this by studying a basic human principal, Quantum physics. The foundation of who we are disappears and reappears constantly. Its exiting to see what our combined energy will become in the future.

Does anybody else have a ‘widow’s peak’ hairline about the indentation in the center of their forehead? I have the dark indention in my forehead and just above is the classical V shapped widow’s mark.

These “bumps” that everyone is talking about are most likely a result of the sutures in your skull fusing after infancy. There is one bump in the back of every human head called the occipital protuberance. This bump will range in size from person to person but everyone has it. If the bump is soft, you could be touching a lymph-node. If you’re losing weight, sweating in your sleep or having abnormal physical problems, then you should see a doctor just to be sure.
Here is a description on how the skull is formed.
“The skull is a complex structure; its bones are formed both by intramembranous and endochondral ossification. The bones of the splanchnocranium (face) and the sides and roof of the neurocranium are formed by intramembranous (or dermal) ossification, while the bones supporting the brain (the occipital, sphenoid, temporal, and ethmoid) are largely formed by endochondral ossification.
At birth, the human skull is made up of 404 separate bony elements. As growth occurs, many of these bony elements gradually fuse together into solid bone (for example, the frontal bone). The bones of the roof of the skull are initially separated by regions of dense connective tissue called “cranial sutures”. There are five sutures: the frontal suture, sagittal suture, lambdoid suture, coronal suture, and squamosal suture. “

I am happy to find this website. I have noticed an indentation on the right top of my head for nearly two years now. The doctors don’t see anything in my x-rays. They all have different theories. I went to an alternative doctor and he suspects an old hematoma that has caused the dent. The indentations starts at my hairline back 4 inches, along the sutures where the frontal lobes meet. The dent is approximately 1/2 inch deep. I have had headaches all my life. I have had 17 falls throughout my life causing head and neck injuries. I have had 6 falls in the last three years. I am 60 years old. I have vision trouble in my right eye. The eye doctor said it was due to high blood pressure. I have balance problems.
I have not had any concrete anwers. If I do, I will e-mail again. Hopefully, there will be an answer and all of us need not to be concerned anymore.
Take care all!

I found 2 dents in my head tonight..after having a very sharp pain i took my sunglasses off my head and started rubbing my head and felt them..scared me to death !
I called my Aunt and she thinks it may be related to me always wearing my sunglasses on my head ( Almost Daily ) ..the dents are pretty much in that area where they would sit but bigger and are sensitive when i touch them and i am getting sharp pains coming and going .

Hi there, probably my situation is slightly different from you. I have an indentation due to banging my head upwards on the car door. (its complicated to explain) Ever since then, the indentation just stays there and if any one were to touch my head, the dent is very obvious as when you feel my head, you can feel it going downwards and up again. It is giving me headaches and such but i have yet to see a doctor about this.

Isn’t it interesting that so many people are having this problem. I discovered mine in Sept. 07. At times they are deeper than other times. The right side hole seems to run along side a ridge. It is large enough that the end of my forefinger goes into it. Asked my doctor, he could also fill it and asked if I wanted to have x-rays. I declined at that time. I now am beginning to feel one on the left side. There seems to be a ridge between the 2 of them that runs the lenght of my scalp area. Last year at this time I had horrible headaches and was really tired. Then it let up around January 08, I am now having the headaches and fatigue again. The headaches start each day at the same time, around 6:30 A.M. I do have an appointment at my doctor on October 10th, and will again see what he recommends. I think if he suggests having the xrays, I will this time just for piece of mind. The only medications that I take are a thyroid medication and my asmtha inhaler. There has to be some sensible reason that people are finding these indentions, when they weren’t there before. I have really worried about this and was very glad to find this site, I will respond back after I see my doctor, we’ll see what his view are.

I think the dents have to do with stress, work, money, pregnency, school maybe are brains can’t handle the pressure we should all go on vacation and see if the dens go away.

I have two indents on the top of my skull also. They run front to back and are about 3 inches long, they are not painful, but I worry because I have a lot of medical problems such as pulmonary hypertension, kidney and thyroid disease, and carcinoid tumors in the liver,I was wondering if they may be caused by one or more of the medications I take

Double grooves above the hairline…well, thanks to this page I just worked it out (what it is for me, at least – looks like there are probably several different causes for the different symptoms y’all are experiencing) —- so, big thanks to Nancy (halfway up the page from here) who worked out that it’s due to wearing sunglasses on top of one’s head – I always wear shades as a sort of Alice band (boys can’t wear headbands! and otherwise my hair gets in my eyes, but my other half likes it like that and won’t let me cut it shorter! ;-) and they fit the grooves exactly —- and the grooves only manifested after I switched to these shades from the previous pair, which didn’t have corresponding grooves of their own!
So, THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED NANCY from someone who is no longer worried about developing holes in his head!
Cheers,
Tommy B.

October 7th, 2008 at 7:35 am
I am happy I am not alone in this, yet sad for everyone else who has this weird problem, especially if it includes pain and headaches.
The last few posts I noticed that several people are on thyroid medcine as I am. I have been on it for the past 8 years, I don’t know if that could relate to this?
My dent is a fontanella-type soft spot in the back of my head on the right side (just over the top of the head). It is about 3 inches x 2 inches big, but only about a quarter-size part of that causes me pain. I also get migraines about twice a year and bad headaches almost every day it seems, but a lot worse when I am under stress.
I cannot scrub that part of my head when I shampoo because of the pain. There are times the pain is so bad I just take a sleeping pill and go to bed. Other times it is barely noticeable. Lately it has been getting worse.
I want to make a doctor’s appointment, but I feel as though nothing will be found. My doctor and family think I am a hypochodriac to begin with.
Last night in bed I thought- Gee, what if all the people and myseld and others have unknowningly been abducted by aliens and implanted in the head with some sort of device? LOL. Trust me, I’d never say that outloud, but weirder stuff can happen!
October 9th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I have indents in my skull…………they come only after I have had my sunglasses up on the top of my head…so there is a dent on either side of my hairline as well…..they sometimes feel like they are burning. It is at teh spot where a baby has the soft spot. The spot is smooth except after having my glasses up there and they are very defined noticable ridges where the glasses rest.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
forgot to mention that mine come and go…if I have the sunglasses on my head day after day as in the summer it takes a while (as in days) for them to go away and they do get deeper when I have the glasses on for an extended period. In the winter when I am not doing this they are barely noticable. If I only have them on a couple hours of the day here and there they will also only last for a couple hours.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Well, it’s been a year now and I still have the skull indentation on the top of my forehead. I don’t wear sunglasses, have not been in an accident and am not on any meds. I showed it to my doctor and the only thing she could come up with is that I’m 40 years old now and with age the skin’s tissue becomes thin. It’s very prominent and no doubt a skull indentation showing through. I cut my hair to include bangs to hide the indentation. The question is, what would cause this skull indentation? I can’t find answers from my doctor or by googling.
October 10th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
It almost seems as if there’s an new disease emerging or something regarding pain and lumps/ridges on the skull. When I found this site and realized that so many people were suffering the same symptoms as myself I was truly amazed. I’ve spoken to three doctors about this and one said it was tension and the other said I should get out of the house more and the last said they were normal and had probably been there since I was born and just hadn’t noticed them before. As far as the pain went, I was told to change my shampoo. I’ve found most doc’s love to lump any strange symptoms (especially women) have under; stress, tension or the old favourite “It’s all in your head.” Well this time it is, only it’s not in my head, but on it!!
For the past three years I’ve had serious pain on my scalp. It even hurts to move my hair, and brushing is a real ordeal. The pain usually starts on the top side of my head and then spreads to the other side. The pain lasts about a week to ten days. When this happens, I also feel unwell; sort of flu-like symptoms but different (if that makes any sense). About two years ago I discovered a couple of ridges on the left side of my skull that hadn’t been there before. Since then I’ve developed ridges on both sides of my skull beginning at the hairline, about level with the outer edge of my eyebrow. They extend about six inches towards the top of my head. Lumps have also formed at various other places on my skull, too. Last month I noticed a dent in my forehead running from my hairline and reaching almost to the inner edge of my eyebrow. My forehead is also bulging a little at the top! I swear that if I shaved my head it would look very strange indeed.
Physically, I’ve been feeling worse as time goes by and I think my physical symptoms have something to do with these changes on my skull. No doctor seems to know anything about this type of thing, or they don’t want to take the time to explore any causes.
These symptoms that so many of us seem to be suffering from are really disconcerting and seem to be relatively new to the medical field seeing as no docs seem to know anything. If anyone has any new info, please post.
Thanks for listening.
Liz

This is in reply Susan’s post of Oct 7th.
Susan, you should see some pictures my husband’s taken of long red welts/bruises on the back of my legs when I get up some mornings. There were about ten of them on each leg, each about six inches long and they seemed to form some sort of criss-cross pattern; different on each leg. That’s happened twice more since then and the last time I also had a mark on the inside of my forearm; about three inches up from my wrist. It was a short red line (like a bruise) with a triangle above it and a short red line at the top of the triangle. It lasted about a week and faded just like the marks on my legs. I also got out of bed one morning to find mud all over my feet and bottom of my legs! So, in answer to your post; I wouldn’t argue with your comment about abductions given what’s happened to me regarding the marks and the skull problems!!

I can’t believe how many people are on this sight about dents in the skull. I thought I was unique. Over the last year or so I have discovered one prominent dent and one that is not as prominent. The main one, when it is larger, is tender just to the touch. They both come and go, although the prominent one remains there most of the time. These were not here before. As someone else mentioned above, I also have a compulsive need to touch my head and hair, and was shocked when I found the dents. I have ruled out the cause from hitting my head, wearing headbands or ponytail holders. There is no easy answer as to why they are there. I would really like to know if anyone has heard any answers from their doctors. I also get headaches.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:25 am
It could be that some of you may be suffering from a form of Scleroderma known as “Linear En Coup de Sabre”. It may be necessary for a biopsy to rule out this disease. Those of you who have had this since childhood may indicate that you had the disease as a child and it has done it’s damage. If the skin feels hardened or is discolored or you have headaches, I urge you to get it checked out, because there are some treatments available that are promising and work. If you have had siezures, it may indicate the disease as well.
For those of you who have noticed changes recently, get it checked out. It’s always better to know what your up against so you can fight it. If your doctor says he don’t know what it is, look on line and find a doctor who knows what he’s talking about.and specializes in these things.
Best wishes to all of you.

Wow, what a lot of dents and stuff going on. I was just sitting down watching a movie and rubbed the center of my head along the crown and found that I can feel the sutures running from my forehead all the way to the base of my skull. It was certainly weird enough for me to get online and see if it’s normal. I guess it is. I then found that I can feel almost every ridge between each plate. I remembered that I don’t wear hats for very long because they make my head hurt intensely after awhile. Anything on my head hurts, when I was in the Army the helmet would hurt so bad I had to use mind-over-matter to get through the day. I wear glasses and they hurt the sides of my head. Weird. Thank you everyone for all the posts, it’s interesting and I hope it isn’t some new unheard of ‘disease’ that we just started making known.

http://www.starchildproject.com/NatlGeoResponse.html#Optic Hi. This website shows that there is a three line cranial division in a normal human skull. What I find interesting is that most posts here indicate that the indentations occur in the front of the forehead. ..like mine does. I was told by my Mom that when I was a kid, I was told to take a nap and I didn’t like doing that. I recall lying on my bed for my nap, putting my feet on the window (being 2 – 3 years old, didn’t realize what breaking glass meant) and I recall kicking outward in anger. My Mom told me that a large glass shard stuck into my forehead and as she investigated the breaking glass, came into my room to find me under the bed with blood streaming out from under the bed. All I remember is the anger and pushing my feet into the window. Well, I have had an indent running from the top center of my hairline, through the center of my forehead, leading down to almost between my eyebrows. I’ve had this forever as long as I can remember. Since reading these posts, tho, I have since felt for other indents and find that I have one more…one leading from the very top of my head, connecting to the indent that I’ve had since childhood. Hmmm…
I’m glad I was able to look at the scientific website that refers to the separation of the cranium. Otherwise, I’d be worrying about more than one indent… please check it out…logical reasons always help diminish my fears. Here’s the page again… http://www.starchildproject.com/NatlGeoResponse.html#Optic Best wishes always. Cindy

I am a 21 year old F, in my last year of college majoring in nursing. Beginning of this year I’ve noticed a change in the shape of my forehead. It is an indentation directly in the middle of my forehead, and its about an inch wide or so, and another smaller dent right on the side of it. I’ve noticed, as well as others, that the indentations appear to be bruised. No pain involved with touch, but I’ve had frequent headaches (feels like sinus pressure)-associated with school/exams/stress- people notice it more than I even think about it, and it has been distressing because my face is my appearance. I’ve been to 3 doctors, one xray of the skull with normal results, and several trials of sinus meds, antibiotics, analgesics….one doc suggested that migraine headaches often show up as sinus pressure symptoms, but couldn’t explain the mild discoloration and indentations. She suggested I get an MRI/CT of sinus cavity – which I did not, too expensive. I have just learned to just deal with my appearance, and i might just cut some bangs. If there was /someone that had an eitiolgy for these dents we all have in common, SOMEONE would have gotten a result or diagnosis.

Hi everyone,
I’m 18 years old, turning 19 in a few months. I have a large indentation in the back of my skull (roughly where the parietal bone meets the occipital bone). In addition, the back of my head is very flat.
My head was definitely shaped like this by the time I was 13, but not as pronounced as it has gotten over the last few years. It’s odd, because I know for certain that my head was round at least up until I was 9. Pictures prove it.
I have two brothers and their heads are perfectly round. Both of my parents’ heads are perfectly round. All of my grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles have round heads. I can come up with no answer for why I have a flat and indented skull. It doesn’t seem to be genetic because NO ONE in my family has a skull like mine.
It’s pronounced enough that when I shaved my head for a performance of A Few Good Men, everyone in the cast noticed (and one boy with NO tact at ALL insisted on “caressing Avery’s dent” nearly every day).
To make things more frustrating, I’ve been thinking about this problem for years. I told my mother about it a while ago and she told me I was being silly because “everyone is different.” Honestly, that’s bull. I’ve spent the last few years observing the shapes of people’s heads to confirm my idea that most heads are round. It has been confirmed. I have NEVER seen anyone with a head like mine. Does anyone know what can cause this? (I also plan on seeing a doctor in a few months and I’ll repost once I do).

I forgot to mention that the site of the dent is often sore or tender, like most of the above instances.

I sure find it very mysterious that NO doctor all over this earth can explain why people are getting these 2-3 vertical indentations on there forehead in the same spot all of a sudden. Everyone has googled and searched for an answer and WE (I have the same 2 vertcal lines on my forehead) still have not found a GOOD answer. My 2 indentations, which makes it seem like I have a lump on forehead, are sometimes sore as well. And ive also noticed that me eye sight seems to have problems along with headaches. This is very weird because you cant find any history about this problem and it seems like it just started happening in the past several years. I guess my main question/ or fear would be, how can pieces of your forehead(bone) just dissapear? Thanks for sharing everyone. At least we know were in it together.

I read a few of these posts and thought I would give some input. First of all let me wish hol good luck in nursing school, I just finished in May and received my license as an RN in June. When my daughter was around 2 we noticed she had a line that went from her hair line down her forehead and along the left side of her nose that was slightly off colored kinda like a bruise. It would turn really bright red/purple when she cried, was sick or really tired. By the time she was 4 the discolored line had became an indention that included her eyebrow which she had almost lost all of the hair and the features (eye, nose, and mouth) on that side were smaller than the right. Every time we had asked a Dr. they said it was just a birth mark. When I noticed the asymetry of her face and the lack of the eyebrow hair I took her to the Dr. again. This time I was lucky and the Dr. had recently graduated so he remembered something that sounded very similar. He said he was almost positive she had Scleroderma en coup de sabre and she would need to see a Pediatric Rheumatologist for an acurate diagnosis. Luckily one of the few pediatric specialist who specialized in Scleroderma happened to be in the same practice. We returned 2 wks later and as soon as he walked in the office and took one look at her he confirmed the diagnosis. Within the following 6-12 months she developed a second line that is at an angle from around the middle of the left eyebrow and slanted out to the side of her head sort of forming an angled V. She took methotrexate once a wk for approx 3yrs until she began to vomit immediately following taking them. At this point there is really nothing else we can do but see how things turn out for her. The involved side will never be “normal” it simply did not develop at the same rate and will never catch up.
The really strange thing is that last week I noticed a line over my right eye that extends from the hair line to the top inside corner of my right eye. Mine is not exactly straight it sortof curves further in about half way down. I have had right sided headaches off and on for 1-2 years about 1 a wk sometimes lasting 2-3 days at a time, lots of sinus problems especially on the right side and over the past year or so I noticed that my right eye seems to be “closing’. I thought I just had a lazy eyelid because it just started sort of drooping it now covers over part of the pupil all the time and if I smile it completely closes. I also had a very hard time getting contacts that worked for my right eye this year because it just seems blurry no matter what I try. The Optometrist said he thought it was due to dry eye. I think I may have the same thing as my daughter but I am not sure. I will be seeing a specialist as soon as I can get time off from work. I suggest anyone with these “dents and lines” don’t even bother with a regular Dr. go to either a Dermatologist or a Rheumatologist preferably one who has some experience in diagnosing scleroderma. My primary care Dr. did not even bother to look at me and had no idea what type of testing you do for scleroderma. Good luck to all and I hope we all find answers.

Really Scary stuff.
I noticed I had a small indentation a few years back and thought nothing of it. But now it runs all the way from the top of my head down to the temple – exactly follwing the coronal suture line on the right side of my head. For a year or two I ignored it but now the flesh in the surrounding skin is wasting away and if i press the edges of the indentation I can feel a crunching within the flesh. I went to see my GP who didnt have a clue and told me everything would be fine. Im scared that in another year or two half of the flesh on the right side of my head will have wasted away. Every now and then I get this tingle across my brain – almost like it is being pickled.
I do not know what to do, the paranoia is horrible
November 9th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
John S, what you are feeling is not normal. You need to get a second opinion. Get a scalp xray followed an MRI and a CT scan. I, like many of you, have an indentation on my right frontal scalp. I asked a friend of mine about it, he is a doctor. I told him I didn’t have it there before. He said that I should have it checked out as soon as possible since it is not normal. He was very honest with me. He said that there is a type of bone cancer that starts off with the indentations. I need the xrays and lab work done asap. Please, follow up with your doctor. I am.

Hi everyone,
My husband also has a dent in his scull that just started. He NEVER wears sunglasses on his head. I dont know for sure but I wonder, we have been to chiropractors in the past that adjusted the plates in the skull. They really moved. So since they are movable, I wonder if this new dent is just a manifestation of a misalignment of the spine. And that perhaps the additional pressure put on the area of misalignment is interfering with blood/nerve supply to the area? Any comments? Has anyone tried a chiropractor?

Hi,
I have been noticing also, probably over the past month a dent in my forehead, which is noticeable as a dark shadow. I am not aware of whether this changes during the day as I rarely get to look in a mirror. Recently going for a scan I was made aware of how dehydrated my body was. I had previously also been having lots of headaches (also connected to dehydration and overuse of the computer and surprising deterioration in eye sight, needing specs updating). As I’m in my forties and going through menopause, I am further dehydrated because of hot flushes and not sleeping well. I have come to the conclusion that since I have not lost weight, am not on any drugs that dehydration is the most likely cause and despite my awareness of it, I still rarely have a drink. I am also very busy and frequently under a lot of stress, hence not looking after my own welfare and not drinking enough. Once I am able to improve the quantity I drink which should be at least 8 glasses a day, then I will report back if there is any improvement. After updating my specs and not using the computer before bedtime, headaches went and sleep improved a little.

Avery
I also have a dent in the centre of the parietal bone towards the back of my skull. It is very sensetive an can be sore at times also. and sometimes the skin looks red ik that area. I also have numerous other lumps and bumps but this one is the most noticable and I have noticed that it seems to be getting bigger as I get older. Also, the way that my hair sits on my head in that area is looking different and stick out at a funny angle.

I am a 32 year old female and too have noticed in the past 2 years deep indentations on my skull. The longest one is about 4 inches on the top of my head (if I place my index finger in it it is about half as deep as the width of my finger, if that makes sense!). I have 4 kids (these were definitely not there before the kids.) I have also had stress induced hair loss for the past 3 years that will not go away but I am thinking it may have something to do with this. My scalp is also red in and around the area of the indentations. My doctor immediately gave me a ton of blood tests and xrays, all which came back fine. She then referred me to a dermatologist. Who also thought it to be abnormal especially with the redening. They think that my scalp is for some reason swollen or retaining water in some areas making the area around what would be normal levels on my head raised so it feels like indentations. These “dents” also get tender sometimes. They took a deep tissue sample from the middle of one of the areas (had to get 3 stitches-ow!) and now I have a scar but that too didnt show anything but Telogen Effluvium (a stress induced hair loss). They asked for more bloodwork and sent me to a third dermatologist that specializes in hard cases as well as womens hairloss. I have been getting injections of steroids in my scalp mostly to try and stop my hair from shedding but the steroid is suppose to stop inflamation. So, if my “dents” in my scalp were from inflamation and water retention you think it would have gotten better but they have only gotten a little deeper. This specialist (now a year after seeing her) wants to run more bloodwork and take another deep tissue sample from a different area of my head. I do not want to do the tissue sample only to get another sensitive scar my scalp and no answers. I have googled this subject many times & this is the first time I have seen anything. I am thinking it may not be anything serious- just weird! I have browsed over most of the entries on here and what I have seen is no one has anything come back from there doctor as a genuine cause or concern. I would definitely appreciate anyone who’s doctor has figured something out. It would be nice to not have to pay for these ongoing doctor bills not to mention the mistery aspect! I think its probably not more thaan a coincidence that most of the entries on here are by women- I am wondering if it could be a hormonal thing- who knows!

I woke up this morning after a long weekend in front of the computer completing school projects and found one of these mentioned vertical dents that looks like a faint bruise at the right center of my forehead. It is softer to the touch than the left side of my forehead and it’s size is approximately .5″ x 1.5″. It was not there yesterday, I don’t believe. I am 38yrs old. I am glad for all of these posts, yet it seems strange no one has a conclusive answer to this. I don’t get headaches generally. It’s too early to give any symptoms, I suppose.
December 27th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I recently saw my doctor about the deformity in back of my skull. Here is what he had to say:
The flatness in the back of my skull is within normal variation, as is the dent. However, you do not usually see the two together. The fact that I have both makes each feature more pronounced than it would be without the other. He said though it was unusual it was not abnormal.
What he said was abnormal, however, is a bulge I have below the dent and the flat surface which raises the angle of the flat surface, making it stand out more. It also emphasizes the dent. He referred me to a neurosurgeon who will take a look at the bulge and try to figure out if it’s anything to be concerned about. My physician does not believe that it is anything serious, but it is abnormal. I’ll write again once I see the neurosurgeon.

One more to join the crowd! I am 73 and have an indentation from my left eyebrow to my scalp line–just one. If it was from glasses, wouldn’t there be two? My doctor said that he has never seen anything like it. So I am scheduled for X-rays next week. Luckily, although I had migraines for 25 years, I don’t have any symptoms now. I feel for some of you, especially the younger ones. This is a real mystery. Is there any such thing as a “Skull Specialist”?? Don’t forget us if you learn anything, please. I will let you know if the X-ray shows anything, which I doubt. Thanks for being there so we are not alone.

Avery, I am curiously looking for the answer about those dents.
I have had those dents for about 6 months now. Somewhere I read that these are due to dehydration. I drank lots of water for a while and suprisingly my dents got smaller. But I started to get headaches due to overhydration. The pressure inside my head increase due to over-drinking. Thats not healthy..
Looking forward to your visit to neurosurgeon
Happy New Year

I’ve only scanned over these messages but the majority appear to consist of indentations around the parietal (posterior to hairline) and occipital bones, rather than the frontal bone.
I have recently found a long vertical ‘canal’ running from my hairline, down to my right eye. I first thought it was a retained metopic suture, which usually fuses completely by around 2 years of age, but some adults can retain an unfused one throughout life. However, the metopic suture runs from the centre line of the frontal bone down to the tip of nasal bone and my one is too off-centre to be this.
I also used to suffer from migraines (not so much now) and have a lot of sinus problems so it could be one of the sinus channels, but I think these run along the sagittal suture (correct me if I’m wrong).
I have also been very stressed with my degree (studying bones, funnily enough!) lately so hopefully this is just the cause but if anyone else has similar indentations and a diagnosis, I would be most grateful to find out what it is. I may go the doctors to get it checked out. I felt a bit silly going, but after reading all these comments, I think ‘better safe than sorry’.
Best of luck to you all.

I’m glad I found this website. My ex boyfriend took my head and banged the back of it into the wall so had he gave me a minor concussion. It has been 4 days later and I woke up and noticed I have a red line indention across the front of my forehead. It is very sore and hurts to touch. I am making a doctors appointment asap. I believe this to be related to what he did. But, he banged the back of my head so I dontknow why this is on my forehead?

I’m SO glad to have found this website and to find the answer for the cause of the recent dents in my head. Mine are definitely from wearing glasses on the top of my head. For the past year or so I’ve tended to wear my regular glasses on top of my head while I’m doing things around the house, putting them on only when I watch TV or go out. These dents seem to have gradually appeared over the last six or eight months and really had me worried! The nose pads on the glasses fit perfectly into the two symmetrical indentations about an inch back from my hairline… and yes, they are deeper in the evening than in the morning. Thank you fellow dent-heads for the answer to my mystery! (This brings new meaning to the old expression “getting soft in the head”.) I turned 60 this year and it seems everything’s going soft on me! For those of you whose dents aren’t due to glasses, I wish you good luck in finding the cause and good health!

Hi everyone,
I live in the UK and am 21 years old. Really happy to find this website as I have been going out of my mind about these dents I have had since I can remember. It didn’t really trouble me until my hair was thinning rapidly.
My dent is on the top of my head and sort of goes in a “u” shape. Been to hair loss clinics and spent over £1000 on creams and pills, this has had no result. The dent is quite deep and getting more concerned about it as time goes on.
It is getting embarresing going to the hair dressers as all I can think about is my dent and bald spot (no baldness in the family)
CAN ANYONE HELP??
Many Thanks

PS the exact location of the phantom dent is on the softspot, near to the crown

I believe honestly I have thought alot about this……because i have same issues, and noticing that most are women and I honestly believe it’s from wearing sunglasses on your head, I have been for the past 3 months when i started noticing the first bump, but my tongue ring when put back in after not having it in for so makes indentions quick on hard surface, so seriously take in consideration that the answer icould be a very simple one , because I was honestly scared and worried, but SUNGLASSES, it does fit the nose part of glasses very perfectly and especially for those that the indentions come and go,,,,,and mostly women wear sunglasses on their head. And through 5 years of this website, no real conclusion, keep it simple.

Well, I have the report from the doctor; and like most of you, the skull X-ray showed nothing. My next plan is to ask my hair dresser if he knows anything. I bet he does!! Will let you know at the end of the month when I have my hair done. Sorry that I haven’t any better info for you all.
January 25th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Hey I thought I would post, I think it is safe to say it is not from wearing sun glasses, As I never in my life have worn sunglasses on my head
And it is not gender related, because there are both many male and females experiencing these bumps
I find that most people posting have bumps in similair places
I also have these indentations and bumps etc, mine are not painfull, and I did have head aches a lot as a child, and still ocasionally get them, but that may or may not be completely un related.
I am male and I am 18, It seems that everyone getting these mysterious dents and or bumps varies widely in age.
most people aren’t experincing severe pain, or anythign that effects there quality of life
My doctor told me mine were just normal, and that was all, but i foudn more after she told me that
The best explenation i’ve read so far i believe is the one that said it is problem from bumping our heads in our past and our skull just growing into it. This might also explain why we are experiencing them in similair places, Perhaps those spots have a high chance of being bumbed without noticing, Like bumping the left side of yoru ehad while getting out of the car or something like that,.
I would also assume it isn’t harmful because everyoen that has posted, hasn’t been severly ill, So i don’t think it should cause to much worry.
But I am with you all, I am curious as to what it is, maybe we’ll never know?
January 28th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
my son fell from our bed the other night. when i got home,,i noticed a lump on his head when i touched it’s indented. i was so worried so the next day i went to the hospital to have him check. his pediatrician said he needs an x-ray… we waited for a while and the radiologist said that there might be a suspected fracture on his skull.. but we have to wait the next day to find out the official result..
i will keep you posted.

I am so relieved to find this site. I googled “head dent”, feeling completely ridiculous doing so, but I’ve been terrified that there might be a crack in my scull because there is a flat dent in the front left side of my scull, near where I hit it very hard on a shelf a month ago, and what feels like a ridge down the middle of my forehead from the hairline. My whole scalp is very tender, even if I carefully comb my hair it feels like the injury just happened. I didn’t have symptoms of a concussion though and when I talked to my physician, she said that that was the thickest part of the scull, and I wouldn’t have actually cracked or dented it without having very serious symptoms. She diagnosed it as being “hypersensitive” – does that sound right? Everyone else seems confused about it and asks if my scull felt different before the injury and I honestly don’t know; I never paid attention, it’s just I can’t stop being paranoid and noticing now. My mom thinks the scull might be bruised, which could take months to heal, and I guess that might explain some of the denting….
Anyway it’s a comfort to know you’re not alone even if there aren’t any answers.

I have a couple of dents in my forehead and also on the top back of my head. I started searching online for answers and found a site where people said they had dents at the injection site of a drug called Kenalog. I looked it up and this is the same drug in the nasal spray I am using for allergies. It is called Triamcinolone. Are any of you using this? I noticed the dents about 4 mos ago and have been using the drug for about 6 mos. I am gong to stop using the drug and see if the dents go away.

February 4th, 2009 at 5:23 am
I just have one large dent on the right side of my head but ive had it as long as I can remember. My concern is the lump on the top of my head in the back by my cowlic. The spot in the middle of colwlick is soft and the top of my skull is cone shaped while the back of my head is flat. Ive had migraines and vision problems and theyve even done a cat scan a couple years ago and told me it camw back normal. I also have areas of my scalp that are white pink and a greenish color. I also have seizures, body itches, sinus infection after sinus infection, vision changes, sometimes i see stars for no reason, mood swings, memory problems, i get irritiable at the drop of a hat, cant focus lack of concentration, sore spots all over my head which change all the time and a weird blue dot on the right side of my head. lol
Does anyone know how to make a mold of your head to see for sure if ur head is changing shape?

I too have two indentations, on either side of center, about 2″ wide, running straight back from my hairline to about 5″ into the top of my skull. I wear reading glasses daily for 2 years now on top of my head. Sometimes I have 2 pair of reading plus sunglasses up there! While wearing my glasses, I hit the top of my head while closing an SUV back door in July 08 and slammed the glasses into my the top of my skull. There was no scalp breakage, but that’s when I found these ridges, and thought I had just created them. However, we are seven months later, and they are still here, the one on the right being deeper than before.
I asked my doctor back in November and he said it can take a long time for this to return to normal after a blow, but I think this has been too long and it’s getting worse. I don’t believe this started the day of the head bang, but rather the bang led me to find them.
I know I did not have these two years ago as I shaved my hair to 1″ and would have noticed them. I am 53 and female.
I wonder if this could this be an indicator of another issue. I am writing a couple of doctors about this and will send the link to this site.

I have a large indention that is on the top of my head towards the bck. The dent is very distinct and large. I noticed it probably about a year ago ( I am 33 now) but didnt have any kind of pain or tenderness at all until about October of this year when I started getting a “pressure like” feeling and a burning feeling where the dent is. I was finally able to go to the doctor in January. When he felt of it he acted like it was no big deal and said that all heads are “lumpy”. He did go ahead and send me for a CT scan just to be sure. The results all came back normal. He said that my headaches were being caused by the muscles in my neck and shoulder area were very tense and tight. The muscles from your neck do go all the way up the back of your head and to the forehead region. He said that the strain that is in my neck is going up the back of my of head and that is the source of my pain. It is mainly due to poor posture and neck muscles that arent strong enough to support my “slumping over”. Since then I have been to physical therapy and also massage therapy and they have both been working to ease the pressure/burning feeling in my head. Now that that is all squared away…it still doesnt explain how the dent got there in the first place. I have another appt to go back next week to address this. I dont really know how much farther to take this…it could be nothing or it could be something very serious. I am being told that the CT scan would have picked up any kind of bone cancer in my skull if it was present…is this right? When I go back, what other tests should I ask for?

Are any of you using Nasocort or any other nasal spray with triamcinolone in it? It seems like my dents came after I started using it. Please let me know.

I am a Chiropractor of 35 years experience. i have developed a treatment protocol for correcting the misalignment’s in the skull. It is called C.A.T.S. I have taught over 700 Chiropractors to do this.
One of my studnts sent me your story.
Part of the training in C.A.T.S. is to correct indents like you mentioned. I see you have been searching for answers since 2005. I just may be able to help.

I have also found some ridges on my scalp just two weeks ago. I am going to the dr tomorrow. At first I blew it off. Then I became concerned and read every blog on this sight. I started to think maybe the sunglasses theory could be the answer for me. However, I use hot rollers in my hair several times a week and that does not cause any ridges on may scalp. (by the way, the ridges are not on any of the spots I put the roller pins.) With hot rollers not only is it pushed tight against your scalp, but it is also very hot on the scalp. Because of this, I don’t buy the sunglasses theory. I found another web sight where people described the same thing as us but are calling it head dents. Anyway one of the bloggers mentioned Meningiomas. I looked it up and think some of my other symptoms (such as headaches, difficulty finding the right word, minor dizziness) make this a valid possibility. Anyone reading this, just look it up. You may have other symptoms that are minor and don’t connect the two. Hopefully, this is not the case for any of you, but so many are looking for answers (like myself).

I’ve had two indentations, one on each side of my head, over my ears, for quite as long as I can remember. About an inch “wide” and a couple inches “long”, and probably 1/4″ deep. I notice them more lately because my glasses, if they are too tight, seem to bother the area and cause me discomfort, I’m a 42 yr old healthy female.
I was talking to my mom, and she told me that I was a “forceps” delivery. The indents sure feel like two grooves that would be made by a pair of foceps on my skull. So, while I don’t know for sure if that’s where they come from, I think it makes sense.
March 5th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Well, I went to the doctor and he said something similar to other doctor comments…the dents are the sutures of my scull. He said it’s normal for it to be more pronounced at times and then not at other times. Can not remember why and will do a search on that later on. Also, I have had memory issues since I was in my early 20’s…now I’m 42. He said that has been going on too long to relate it to any of these new symptoms. Basically, he said some people develope memory problems for unknown reasons. He says I’m fine and I’m going to go with that for now. Also, for those who talk about a dent that is a recent developement on their forehead (not on the scalp) look up scleroderma. See if any of the other symptoms apply to you. Good luck to everyone. I will continue to read the post from time to time to see if anything new developes.
March 7th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Hi all. I guess I’ll share my story:
I’m 28 years old (m), a couple of months ago, I noticed a tapered ridge protruding from the center of my forehead (v-shaped), going from above the hairline down to just above the space in between my eyebrows. I shave my head roughly once a week, so I am certain that this ridge was not there previously. Then I noticed two linear dents running parallel from above each eyebrow, up to my hairline and back to the back of my head. It kinda looks like 2 portions of my forehead inbetween the ridge, have recessed back, causing the dents and the resulting protrusion. I was completely freaked out about it, i thought I was growing horns or turning into an alien or something. I have had no other symptoms whatsoever. The only thing I can attribute it to was a very stressful period of time in the few months leading up to when I noticed it.
I have not saught medical advise, as the symptoms are purely asthetic, and the dents/ridge are completely symetrical. Although, I would like to think the symptoms will dissapper, as they are noticable, and make my forehead look kinda wierd.
I hope we can all get an explaination/cure soon!
Dave.

Hey everyone.
I’m very happy that I found this site. I’m 20 years old. When I was 9 years old I was diagnosed with linear morphia. I have a dent all the way from the middle of my skull to my top lip. Until recently, the only problems I have had from it are cosmetic. Recently, I have had severe pain, especially on the middle of my scalp(where it starts) and the right side of my forehead. It is unbearable! I have talked to my dermatologist about it, but it is very frustrating because it seems like not even she knows much about it. I know there are treatments out there like light therapy and immune suppressing medications, but they can be life threatening! I don’t even know what the cause is.There has got to be someone out there who knows more! I am desperately seeking any answers! My email is seppy72488@yahoo.com

i have two dents in the sides of my head and one in the top middle of my head, I don’t know if I always had them I just noticed three years ago, I don’t feel any pain but I’m just curious to know what’s the cause of this problem
March 15th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Well, like everyone else here, my head or skull seems to be abnormal. I’m 20 and have an indentation towards the very back top of my skull. I also have these weird lumps and smaller dents on the back of my skull. I have no Idea if this is the result of some head trauma I’ve suffered some time ago. The back left of my skull protrudes farther out than the right side. It makes me pretty self conscious and I find myself messing with it constantly. I guess it’s been this way for a couple years now. Whenever I’m sitting around running my fingers around my head I daydream of taking a sander to my skull and smoothing it out, it drives me crazy.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:41 am
I have a line/crease that runs from about 1 inch above my right eyebrow to my crown and when i have been sleeping on my right side it is bright red and unmissible.I have had this all my life but could only see the bit on my face to hairline, but when my hair started to recede i then saw the full size of it.I went to see my doctor many years ago and he said it was nothing to worry about as just the way the muscle is resting,ok for him to say don’t worry though as he aint the 1 waking up with a big red crease running down side of his head.I wonder if any medical people actually know what it is let alone how to get rid of it,anyway i live in hope.
March 24th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I have a large indent on the right side of my skull that mostly follows the coronal suture, but I have researched and I am of normal health and I’m pretty positive it is not due to craniosynostatis, or whatever it’s called. There is no reason it should be there. I have suffered no trauma to the head. I remember it for as long as I’ve lived… I know you guys might think the whole alien thing is crazy but uuuhh… do you really trust doctors? I mean since I was two I got really sick and had to fix MYSELF because the doctors (I’m speaking of western medicine) are just plan dumbasses. I’m sorry, but they take your money, they give you drugs, and they LIVE off of your PAIN. I’m sure there are some good doctors out there but the industry is tainted and they only tried to make me more sick. I cured myself of what they told me was incurable. Don’t believe what they say. You know 1 out of 100 babies in the hospitals are given out to the wrong parents? I can’t really prove that to you but it is seriously that unlikely?… really people, i think you need to wake up and stop trusting someone who makes more money when they prescribe you medicine than when they don’t. Read the book ‘The Estrogen Alternative’ – BIRTH CONTROL IS EXPERIMENTAL, and actually CAUSES tumors and things like endometriosis…….. I KNOW.
It’s coming 2012 here and if you’ve cared to read anything into actual history you’ll see that the ancient sumerians and people from prehispanic mexico (check out the olmecs), and even things in the BIBLE state alien encounters. You must be very arrogant to think that out of the entire universe we are the only people that exist to the ‘highest’ intelligence. Do you read anything on metaphysics, quantum physics, physics at all? science? astronomy? Check out the book ’stalking the wild pendulum’ by Ishtak Bentov. The internet and TV can lie to you and you will have no way of knowing. If you seek some truth, go to a library…
and as for these bumps in my head, I’ve had a trippy life and this whole 2012 thing is a little involved with me and my close tribe of people. Doesn’t seem to damn farfetched to say some people have been abducted. Read about the serpent race that Africans talk about abducting their people to do experiments… I wish I knew how to spell the name properly but it sounds like Chitouri.
When I mess with the indent in my head (and it’s upsetting how big it is, although covered up well by my hair) it starts to hurt almost immediately. I get headaches sometimes and I can tell it’s coming from that very spot.
I’ve read up on two mutations in homosapiens, one occuring specifically around the time of ancient sumeria, that is associated with the brain getting bigger as one gets smarter. 70 percent of people have one mutation, and 30 have the more interesting one called the spindle-mutation, the name similar to a description of a double helix. These mutations make a person able to contain more information, be less emotionally messy so that they can be smart about things. Yeah, like be less tied to a doctor when they tell you that you have this long to live, or this disease, with this medication, or perhaps that everything is normal but just to be safe come back for a checkup… There’s nothing that you can’t find out yourself, and spend less money and learn more things while you’re at it. Seriously, as a human race we’re strangely evolved faster than we should be but that means we’re also ahead of ourselves. We have much much more to discover in western medicine that people in China or Thailand figured out years ago. We have much much more to discover about the universe, why do we think we know so much already?
March 24th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
and PS, chuck… from that post way up there… I’m interested about the ringing in the ears/quantum physics… sort of…. from what I already know I can argue. I can say you’re onto something, but also that I think you’re missing most of the point. And what you said about the whole if it’s on this side of your head you’re ‘chosen’ and if it’s on the other, you’re not?….. I think you’re full of yourself and you’re ’spiritual path of 2012′. And now don’t you think that might get you into trouble? Being perhaps blissfully ignorant? ’nuff said.

This may be off the wall, but after reading post after post and no one with an answer, I’d like to submit a “theory” I’ve had for some time. You brain synapses run on glutamate, an amino acid that provides energy. When you metabolize any amino acid, it produces ammonia as a byproduct. When you use muscles too much, the body can’t get rid of ammonia fast enough. The stiff muscles are, in part, the result.
In the brain, stress or certain inherited conditions can cause much glutamate to be “burned” producing high amounts of ammonia. They body cannot get rid of it fast enough. Ammonia is catabolic–it tears apart almost all biological matter–skin, muscles, eyes, brain.
I have noticed that people have lopsided faces (higher eyebrows on one side, muscles, eyes, more saggy on the other side) which I think corresponds with right-brain, left-brain stuff. [If you are right-brained, the right side is more damaged, even though left side of brain is used to control the right.] My theory is that the excess from the “over-used” side of the brain is damaged by the ammonia.
I think that as the brain circulates brain fluids, when excess ammonia is there (maybe as a result of trauma and expending amino acids to ‘fix” the problem), there may be damage from the inside out as a result. That area may remain vulnerable so that, whenever you are under stress (tired at night), that area thins again. It makes sense also that it is sometimes symetrical as the brain fluid flows between the two halves of the brain at the top, around the side of the ears to the front. Somewhere I found an illustration online. I’ll provide it if I can find it.
I think the ammonia (and maybe cortisol) also affects graying patterns. Look at the way men (and women) gray–along the sides above the ears first. I think it follows the brain fluid circulation path. Even look at Barack Obama’s left hairline in the front. There is a one-inch area thinner than the other side on the left side. He is a lefty.
[FYI-I know this is radical thinking but I have a condition where my NMDA brain receptors have been "downregulated" by long-term stress (physical & mental), and whenever my pituitary has to kick in, the ammonia actually flows down the back of my neck, damaging shoulder muscles repeatedly, causing them to be over-built. I have sores on my sternocleidomastoid muscles in the front of my neck because ammonia flows down the back of my neck and long that muscle. The sores vary based on how long it goes on. Ammonia causes hundreds of other kinds of damage depending on how long it continues. ]

Regarding the ammonia theory, when there’s a problem with too much ammonia levels in the blood causing symptoms, the liver functions need to be evaluated. This person may have cirrhosis or hepatitis.

Hi–I noticed indentations in my skull following an intense swimming class–even my 12 year old son noticed. These were definitely related to the swimming–they were not there before. I can’t find any info on the internet to find out what would be the cause.
Any ideas?

What the ef?
So many people with dents in their foreheads and no explanation whatsoever? I as well have a dent in it, unsymmetrical, spreading vertical from my hairline to my brow in a “S” shape. Well, had this for years now and was always wondering how to get rid of it. Of course, forehead flap not an option.
April 23rd, 2009 at 6:36 pm
I had the same problem with two indentions an inch or so from the hairline… I went to the dr and she said it was from wearing my sunglasses and I stopped putting them on my head two weeks ago and they are almost gone…. crazy but makes sense
April 30th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
I have been noticing the same thing with my skull for almost a year.
I haven’t decided which doctor is best suited to examine these weird deviations. Sometimes they hurt and sometimes they don’t. I am considering the ammonia concept.
When I massage the sore ones they swell a little and then go away. Recently I had a red hair bump that was so painful I had to keep rubbing it, thinking I was helping the circulation. Then I realized that the bump manifested little hair pimples. . .weird! I am afraid to go to the doctor, what if it is a TUMOR! OMG! I am only 42…
I shot our local news team this link with everyone’s complaint about the same thing. Maybe we will finally get some answers!

Hello my fellow dented people ;0) I noticed mine about 2 years ago. I had other “issues” I was finally diagnosed with Lupus however, I have never found anything related to Lupus and my dents. I have been too 5 different neurosurgeons and they have even taken my MRI and X-rays to several neurosurgeon conferences and none of them have provided any type of logical explanation. In my X-ray the dents are visible and since in my case I have some from years before those it is clear they hadn’t been there before, also on one of my MRI little dots appear. They have offered to do a biopsy to see the composition of the tissue around the dents, however, I have refused as it just seems too desperate. The dents do not hurt, they itch sometime and I tend to feel pressure in my skull at times but nothing I can’t handle. I read most of the posts and I wonder if anyone has had blood work done besides X-rays and MRI’s. I have developed other symptoms that may very well be linked to my Lupus so I wont get into that since I do not feel one thing is related to the other. I do want to say that I did go with the gluten intolerant theory and figured it didn’t hurt to see if that was the problem. I quit eating everything that contained gluten for about 2 months and guess what… the dents went away for a while (of course I did start eating bread and so on). So why don’t you give that a try. The truth is I have reduced the amount of gluten I consume but have started to eat some again (and of course my dents are back) but since they don’t hurt and I don’t consider them to be that bad (but well in my case I am more concerned about my Lupus so…). The point is I cannot assure you that that was what made them go away because I have taken lots of stuff (alternative medicine- natural stuff) but I think that for the dents that was what did it. Well, hope it helps and if not it doesn’t hurt to quit eating things that contain gluten. Give it a try and please let us all know ;0) Oh and just in case anyone has Lupus or knows someone that does, tell them to take transfer factor and take up yoga ;0) Good luck to everyone!

For about my whole life since i was about 6 i have noticed that my head was slightly bigger in the back and flatened out in the front. The bump looks like a peak starting near where my coronal suture is located. I have had severe headaches for awhile and doctors dont know what to make of it. The bump seems to be getting larger as time goes on and sometimes feels very tender if i rub it. Can anyone help me out? Is there any treatment or surgery I would be able to undergo to remove this bump? Thanks

Well guys, i guess im in the same boat as you. I tried searching the web and found only this about head dents. I too have recently discovered two parrallel dents on top of my head more towards the front. Gee, maybe we all were abducted!?!?! Somehow im going to get to the bottoms of this. Going to start looking for a doctor that knows about this. Will post anything that sounds probable.

I have the dents. Have had migranes for years and also suffer from depression. After reading several stories on this site – I think mine are from my glasses on the top of my head. I wear them on the top of my head all the time. I will ask my doctor what he thinks but this makes sense. Everyone is different – I would get checked out if you have concerns.

Hi. I looked for ‘dents’ in the head today. I had a surgery in my head a couple of months ago for the bleeding in my head. They cut out a large piece of skull to take care of it. My left eye has been drooping and just a couple of days ago, I saw a dent in my left temple. My left side of face has been swollen since the surgery and it has seemed to get a tiny bit better everyday. I don’t know why they dent came unless my skull is just really adjusting to the healing of the bone back in my head and think it might be moving around in there to get back closest to the form it was in before. Don’t know what’s going on but hoping for the best. Hope the best for the rest of you also. Nite.

I recently notice the same thing, and was looking for some info on the web and found this. I don’t have insurance, so would be glad to know what any finds out.

Same. I have the symmetrical concave spots in the back of my skull, with a small separation of raised skull between them.

I noticed the same dents on my head both sides. I guess Im going to have to start wearing a helmet .

About 6 mos after thoracic and lumbar fusion surgeries that were done to correct a sudden “attack” on my spinal cord in 06 that left me in serious pain at 28 yrs old at the time, I started getting numerous symptoms. The problem with my spine came on overnight literally woke up screaming back was swollen, warm, low grade fever, pain around to ribs. Hospital at time handled it – or should I say didn’t handle it – and did not order lumbar puncture or biopsy. It took 2 yrs to get a doctor to do those – biopsy was unable to determine cause of bone loss, edemas in spine, etc – still do not know what caused problems in spine. Surgeon thinks an infection that cleared up by time of biopsy — maybe due to taking antibiotics over those 2 years for other reasons. The whole thing was very similar to osteomyeltis and probably was that but hospital really messed up – Since about a month prior to that “attack”, I felt fatigued, no energy, just unwell – still do now three years later. Surgeries have not helped.
So six months post surgery, low grade fevers, that really had never gone away in those 2 yrs anyway came back more regularly, started getting livedo reticularis rash which is like blood vessels spasming – a netty lacey rash all over and tiny tiny cherry angiomas all over my upper body, my neck was stiff to say the least, had weird pains and sensations and numerous other problems started. My submandibular gland — on my jaw bone felt and looked and seems – still does, swollen to me – not to any drs but I can FEEL something feels wrong. My skin around my neck and upper chest ripples if I touch it or hold it – never did – like a wavy pattern under the skin more like than on the actual skin. Then I started getting facial numbess and tingling, headache – worst one ever – a three day swollen temple headahce – killed. Now I have been getting pains – sharp sudden pains and sensations in my feet too – but in my head and when I go to touch the spot, I have been feeling dents – and I didn’t have any irregular spots other than those that are normal before – my boyfriend and family think I am a little nuts but after the sharp pain, I feel a dent, and then the scalp gets and stays sore and very tender for hours or until I get another pain in another new dent – so now, there is probably 4-6 dents and I keep getting these bad sharp jab pains in these areas with bad facial tingling – almost feels like pins and needles in your face, numbness , etc. It’s not like I make a habit of feeling every inch of my head and body to find things wrong – I don’t. I FIND them when I get a pain! There’s a reason I found dents on my head – drs are like well do you pull your skin often to see the ripples – uh no, I saw them then held my skin to see what was wrong. – I had bad head pain then touched my head and felt a dent – or more like a circular indentation. I have also had ear pain – deep ear pain and so many other things I am just sick to even think about this disaster. Needless to say that if any dr had been able to help me I wouldn’t have looked this up – no one has been able to. I have seen two primaries, one rheumo to rule out autoimmune disease as I had one positive DNA (lupus screening? test), but tested – for lupus, vasculitis, and RA. My C Reactive Protein was very slightly elevated once – one liver enzyme was elevated for several months — I didn’t regularly take NSAIDs but one dr said any medication taken daily or whatever can raise that. Other than that, my bloodwork has been FINE – totally fine, except in June my SED rate (ESR) that can show nonspecific inflammation somewhere in the body was 40 – should be under or around 20. Last ESR rate recently was 20 which is borderline but I was taking Mangosteen and Naproxen for anti inflammation so they might have lowered the rate. CT scan of my neck soft tissue fine other than saying shotty adenopathy throughout neck but dr even said that means nothing – I thought shotty describing I guess texture of what glands look like, could signal some type of infection, etc but apparently not. A had a mammo mention lymph nodes in armpit area – which we all have of course but no other radiologist mentioned them on previous mammos. Armpits feel sore kinda bumpy to me — I have had pain on left and right side under around rib cage area – sometimes lying on my left side makes it feel like a big ball under me – weird, very tender in there. Alot of stuff going on that no one can see – of COURSE – EXCEPT FOR ME – and FEEL more importantly — I have had so many tests, MS, autoimmune, CT of brain, neck soft tissue, and neck — abdominal CT for another reason, blood work like crazy. As I am typing my left hand, fingers and some parts of my left arm keep going prickly numb – that’s never happened before recently. The area around the back of my ankle bone and back of foot is puffy fluidy like swollen – not like pitting edema but weird – top of foot does same puffed up thing – so does outside of wrists — twice I felt something looked on my forearms and once on the back of my legs, saw a red area that was soooo itchy – like I mean itchy itchy – red then itchy – bugged me for some minutes then just stopped. It’s all these random things – too many – drs are looking at ME like I AM nuts – and I’m not – I am not a person who is usually paranoid about being sick, or wants to be sick or anything like that – at all. I spent three years with this spinal problem unable to live my life and all I want is to feel better. I CAN”T believe there is NOW some other mystery problem brewing in my body – again with all the tests and doctors who apparently SEE what I am saying – or don’t agree what they see is abnormal and , or — who say I don’t know… we have to wait and see – or I don’t know, you have to let it go at some point ? LET WHAT GO? Wanting to feel better??? Noo – no way – So I saw a new neuro today – after two ENTs, a rheumo, another neuro, dermatologist – it’s just ridiculous and he ordered a test of the carotoid artery to see if there is any blockage or circulation problems – so we’ll see — and I have to wait over 2 weeks for this test – I certainly hope it’s not blocked, Usually however, there aren’t symptoms of carotoid artery blockage until someone has a TIA or a stroke – I have a lot of stroke symptoms – without a stroke thankfully but this is getting SCARY and I am having more than a hard time coping with this and feeling crazy and finding now dents on MY HEAD that get awful pains in them – I can feel my heart pound – or pulse pound through them too – I know it runs all thru the body but I never noticed it so much. Every now and again I get these pounding heart feelings – that are really hard or fast but heart monitor when I had it was — normal. I have also felt like I was going to just literally stop breathing a few nights when I tried to lie down to go to sleep – kind of how you feel when that odd falling feeling happens in bed – like right before it happens, that weird out of it feeling – but it’s not that – I am awake just trying to fall asleep – it’s very scary all of this – I am now 31 – my face is going numb, pins and needles, head pains – sharp ones – dents in my head – various and tons of other body or systemic symptoms that are totally – unexplained. I have fibromyalgia my rheumo said – but he said that should not and doesn’t cause any change in appearance – such as this double chin swelling that just happened overnight or the swollen pads around my ankles, etc – rashes, fevers, or cause stuff like this – Something is going on and I am getting crazy about it now – being told I don’t know, I don’t know – let’s wait and see, whatever – it’s crap. It really is – treating someone like they are nuts when we all know our bodies best – no one else – TRUST ME if nothing was wrong, I would be so happy about it – I AM TIRED of tests, and drs and crap from having mystery illnesses that no one understands. Infectious disease dr – yes I saw him too said if I had TB that caused my spinal problems – the chances of having it still in my body infected are slim – more like ZERO cause it would have killed me already or I would be really sick – Here I am like – uh hello – I am 31 and barely can leave me house – I am very sick or ill or in pain or suffering – wake up.. I think – hope he will do what he says and order a galium scan. I really want cancer, or lymphoma or whatever ruled out – blockages of arteries – you know, things that can actually kill me while they’re waiting to see what gets worse. It’s well known if you have symptoms that stay the same, it might not be the end of the world but if you have ones that get worse, change, etc – it could be bad – and since around February – every week, I swear- it’s a new one – a new pain, dent, prick, — flood of heat feeling like hot blood in my ankles – so I get these sensations like things fall on me – dust, hair, water, etc – like something is crawling or whatever on my feet, legs, neck, face – most of the tingling and numbness is on my cheeks and nose, forehead, neck – tested for thyroid – no problems – I was shocked – drs thought mid nite heart problems with the 30 lbs I lost (unusual for me as I am overweight having been on all these crazy meds for 3 yrs and not being able to leave my house) in under 3 weeks unexplained. If I was 110 lbs and lost 30 lbs in 3 weeks with no change at all in diet or exercise, drs would take it seriously but being overweight they just kinda look at you like.. ok well you should have – I just can’t take it anymore – I want to know what’s causing these – one neuro said dents can happen – but didn’t even feel my head – this one today also did not even touch my head. I know what’s going on the inside is more important but with a normal brain MRI when the head pain started happening – not the dents which came more recently, something is freaking wrong and I feel like they are all going to wait til it’s too late – they say if it was something really bad odds are it would show somewhere in some test – well little things have – but no one wants to try to do the addition – they say I am a neuro what’s wrong with your head etc – instead of taking symptoms to try to find a cause all together – for my whole body. It’s exhausting – totally exhausting. So again I had to drive home disappointed that no one has been able to help me – it’s a totally helpless feeling – it really is. To add, why not at this point, sometimes I get this out of it feeling – not blurry vision but just out of it for a sec – not clear, struggle to focus kind of feeling and sometimes & I have been very up and down emotional – like I am normally overly emotional but I can’t even keep up with myself the past two weeks – I feel very depressed and just mood swings – I don’t think it’s from the stress tho – it’s like I can’t help it. Good luck to all of you.

Hello,
I have a large dent in the back of my head I asked the dr about it the other day he just felt of it and pushed in it a bit and asked if it hurt, made me a little dizzy but no pain, he asked how long i’ve had I belive it’s been about 5 years now it is about 1/2 deep in the middle, it runs horozontal to my back lower hairline about 1 inch up, and it about 2 inches from each ear , the largest part of the dent is about 1 inch in width by about 5 inches long, the indention of the site slacks off the closer to my ears it gets. and at times it gets very itchy in the deepest part, drives me crazey……..I thought it may be fat deposits in my skin making it look like the back of my head was sunken in,i’m a little over weight , but dr said no. anyone got any ideas?
I have reactive hypogalcemia, migrane headakes with aura lights & vision disterbances, memory seems to be going, (age?) only 46. no other problems.

Iam 42 and had these same ridges show up in the top of my head now too. I too am a person that plays with my hair and thats how i found mine. I know they werent there a few years ago. i am a night time teeth grinder and i also clench my teeth alot during the day. I am starting to wonder if there is any association with that and the change of bones settling with age. Does anyone else grind their teeth that have this same thing happen. I just had a mri done last month for headaches from an accident i was in and it showed nothing so i cant think it is anything to be concerned about.

OMG! I just found a dent on the top of my head tonight, right smack in the middle of the top of my head! I searched WebMD for information about it and now after reading some of the posts here I’m kinda worried! What the heck causes these indentations? I’ve been having headaches for about two weeks now but I attributed that to my seasonal allergies. This is making me think twice about this and talk to my doctor about this. If I push on the dent, it feels softer than the rest of my head. I’m a healthy 35 year old woman with no worries in the world until now! I didn’t bump my head on anything or have stitches or anything of the sort! Anyone find answers yet? Fat deposit! I don’t think so!

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a 3 inch indentation just to the right of the center of my skull. It has gotten longer and is now going into my forhead. If it goes any further it will be noticable. I also found another one of these indentations on the left side in the same spot, but on the left of the center of my skull. This one isn’t quite as big, but these are worrisome. I can’t find anything onlinee pertaining to these indentations either. It’s frustrating. I don’t have any health insurance since I was injured on the job back in 2006, and have been on L&I. I can’t afford to go to the doctor to have this checked out. I would appreciate it if anyone finds any info on this matter, that you please post it on this web blog. Thank you Susie

Two weeks ago I noticed an indentation on the top of my skull, it was and still is a little sore as if there is a bruise, this morning I woke up and the indentation has a twin running parallel to it. It’s the same as the other but not as deep. I saw an earlier post where a lady is a teeth grinder, I am too. Does this have anything to do with what is going on? I’ve no idea. I’m not in the position to see a doctor because I’m in iraq, but I will be home in 5 weeks, you can bet I’ll be asking him about it.

Hey— check out this.. it is called PHRENOLOGY : def. The study of the shape and protuberances of the skull, based on the now discredited belief that they reveal character and mental capacity.
Obviously– point being— as from reading above as well—- having dents is fairly common! No worries people. Now, if you start getting dizzy spells and headaches that are nothing like a headache you have ever had before, seek immediate medical attention. (I’m a nurse)
Phrenology is the art of reading bumps on a persons head.
It is believed that confirmations of the skull correspond with characteristics of the mind and body.
Phrenologists believe that external areas above the skull grow above specific regions of the brain in that a person chooses to develop.
Phrenologists believe that balanced development of the mind is essential.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1895-Dictionary-Phrenolog.png http://www.cwru.edu/artsci/dittrick/site2/museum/artifacts/group-A/A-5phrenology.htm
Whether it is true or not—- it at least proves that it is sort of normal.

Last night my 17 year old son,who is our youngest child, found a big dent in the top of his head toward the back, not close to the hairline like most people on here. The dent feels deep and is about 2 inches long, My son got pretty nervous and kept asking me questions I couldn’t answer I googled it and came up with Pagets Disease.I was sick about it and couldn’t sleep. We told his dad this morning who is now a nervous wreck. We are taking him to a clinic tomorrow. I have been reading stories on here tonight that make me think I shouldn’t be so worried and I think I may get some sleep tonight ,thank God and thanks to all of you. I will keep you posted on the outcome of this. Thanks so much everyone for sharing your stories.Judy

I feel soooooo much better I have had two dents running from my hairline straight back about 2-3 inches for a while now and everyone thinks I’m crazy. Have an appointment with my Dr tomorrow but didn’t even want to mention it for that reason. Anyone get any results or have any answers.

I’ve noticed indentations in my scalp for a couple of years, they are very painful, almost throbbing and burning, I have had a couple of “punch” biopsies done and they came back
non specific inflammation, I also suffer from two rare auto immune diseases and so they are contributed these indentations to the connective tissue process. I have seen dermatologists in Boston Ma and the the Leahey Clinic and they are all perplexed by what they are. I keep developing more of them and know when they are coming by the pain I get before I can feel them. I also had steroid injections when they first started but that didn’t stop them. I have been prescribed Lyrica to help with the pain which it did but put on 25 lbs so stopped taking that.
I told my dermatologists I don’t want to just treat the symptoms I want to know what it is > I also have diffuse hair loss around them. I joke and say if I shaved my head, my son could drive his match box cars around my head as a race track.
Still searchi ng for the answers too.

I have a deep dent in my skull running from the crown on back. It almost looks like a butt. I suffer from severe headaches to the point where its hard to open my eyes sometimes. Ive never been to the doctor about this but I will tomorrow because my head has never hurt the way it did today.
October 26th, 2009 at 4:07 am
I noticed today that I had a two inch long dent in the top of my head. It really worried me until I read about so many others having the same problem. I believe it may be related to stress since so many people said that was what their doctor thought. We are a nation with a lot of stress and financial worries and this might account for this happening to so many. Good luck to all.

I just searched skull indentations and found a various comments from numerous of people. I am not alone with discovring these indentations in my forward. They have appeared i nthe last couple of months, I am female, african american, age 49.5. I have checked with my physicain and had him to actually feel what I was feeling o nmy forehead. His comment “a skull indentation, asked about prior injuries, and jokingly recommended collegen injections.” He was not concerned, I paln to see a dermatologist to follow -up and get more information if there is any to be gotten. But, I ‘m suelyr glad to know I am not the only one experiencing this.
Let me know if anyone of you find out some medical reasoning behind this. I do wonder in a couple of years if i am going to have a line of obvious craters in my forehead.
December 26th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
i tried to read everything, wore out, so don’t know if this info is in a post. as he/she matures sexually, parts of the brain expand, in particular, at the back of the head. females have add’l problem. swelling (caused by add’l brain tissue) can make strong contact with nerves above the top of spine. causing headaches. when childbearing age is past and the extra brain material dissipates, the skull eventually pulls back together. my best advice: balanced meals, take D, calcium, and eat iceberg lettuce for k2. lay off cigs (i have seen how nicotine destroys tissue) and excessive drinking. so your body has nutrients to make the changes that mother nature demands.

from Rose:
I am 64 year old female and 1 dent appeared last summer- doctor said “I’ve never seen anything like that” and was stumped. Ordered brain scan- showed “benign” fibrous tissue and calcium deposits under the skull in those areas.
Second smaller dent appeared a month ago. HELP! My scalp feels (tight) in those areas with an occasional sting of pain in the large dent area.
My question: I take S.R.R.I antidepressants . All modern ANTI DEPRESSANTS like Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Luvox and many many others work the same way- they alter brain chemistry to make neurotransmitters like seratonin, norepinephrin and dopamine more available, which relieves depression.(I am a licensed health care provider). The one I take has also helped tremendously with relieving my depression symptoms.
How many of you also take these antidepressants? Could some of us have a reaction involving brain chemistry/fluid balances etc. that is not yet known about? Of course we are all guinea pigs since these chemicals have not yet been studied for long-term effects. Once they are, any adverse reactions will of course be at first denied by their producers who stand to make large profits from the continuing sale of their medicines.
Any women my age (64) who just started getting these “dents” in the skull? any new answers?
January 16th, 2010 at 8:55 am
Well i had the opposite effect when i turned 17. My head was pretty tiny, maybe a circumference of 19-20 inches but in no less than a week it swelled to about 22 inches, accompanied by bizarre lip swelling. ive read that it could be a pituitary disorder. i have two bony bumps on the sides of my head that make it appear round because the hair has to curve around them, if they weren’t there my skull would be much smaller and actually have a nice shape. It might sound crazy but it is even hard to keep my head up straight because of the stress on my neck; im always paranoid that its getting bigger but thankfully it hasn’t, just more paranoid. i was actually a very good looking guy before, a solid 9 but my appearance quickly degraded to about 2-3 in less than a week.
There is something called Acid-A-Cal that has a great reputation for restoring normal bone mineral levels; it even gets rid of kidney stones and heel spurs. i only tried it for a month several years ago to see if it would restore my skull to a normal appearance but i dont think i gave it enough time to notice any significant changes. Also, make sure you are getting enough vitamin d, in particular d3, as it is very important for inducing osteoclasts and bone restoration. Good luck guys!

quote Bellino:
‘What the ef?
So many people with dents in their foreheads and no explanation whatsoever? I as well have a dent in it, unsymmetrical, spreading vertical from my hairline to my brow in a “S” shape. Well, had this for years now and was always wondering how to get rid of it. Of course, forehead flap not an option.’
I have the same fuckin thing! Doesn’t hurt or anything, it’s just annoying. Sometimes it’s barely visible, but sometimes it’s very noticeable (depending on the light/shadow effect). I was so annoyed by it, I googled the whole forehead flap thing and FFS techniques, but when I saw that shit I knew it was out of the question. And I don’t understand why there’s no alternative ways of getting rid of this.

I have the same thing. 2 paralell dents on the right side. The 1st started about 6 month ago. Noticed the 2nd about 3 month’s ago. Yes, there was lot of stress at the time as well. When the 1st one on the right side developed I had same headaches starting on the left top of my skull. Some ringing in the ears, felt like I was getting Tinnitus. That all went away. No other symptoms now. I am lefthanded. I do not take anti depressants, since I do not believe in psycho pharmaceutica.I have no hairloss in the area or discoloration. I am 56, live in California. Would be interesting to have a map to see if everybody that has this is concentrated around larger cities, manufacturing or????

I recently noticed an indentation next to a hair graft from surgical removal because I have skin cancer primarily on my scalp. I am going thru the same thing with the docs saying, “I don’t know what it is” even after the cat scan was done. I believe its bone loss from canellogg injections. Some websites say its from osteoporosis but I dont have that. I am sick and tired of these doctors who are trained professionals and who you would expect their comment to be “I am not sure but lets find out.” The bottom line is they do not care. I guess these bones just fell out of my head!!!!
February 25th, 2010 at 9:31 am
Like you guys I found a dent in my head. I mentioned it to my Doctor, who didn’t know why it was their so ordered an xray. They x-ray showed thinning of the bone. I was then sent to the hospital for an MRI scan that showed “yep you have a dent” but also that the bone is about a 1/3 the thickness in that spot. The Doctor said that it isn’t a tumor and they had never seen it before. but were pretty sure it was all normal. They want to check in about 6 months that that area has not thinned any more, but believe it is unlikely. The one thing that I do have to do is wear head gear if I want to do any contact sports.
March 5th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
I too found two large dents just about an inch past my hairline this morning while brushing my hair back. freaked out a bit.. read and read post after post. one hit the nail on the head i think. someone mentioned glasses with nosepieces resting on top of their heads. i went and put my glasses where they rest for 8 hrs a day, and bingo, the indents are right where the nosepieces are. if they leave dents in your nose, im sure gravity will help them leave dents in your head. any of you reading these posts who wear glasses with nosepieces which sit on top of their head any part of the day, go look where those nose pads sit when on top of your head. im sure you will find the dents are directly under the pads. mean ol’ mr. gravity.

My step daughter has a “dent” as everyone states on theleft side of her head from her hair line to her nose. This is a diagnosed birth defects that can be slight at birth and then deteriorates with time. Hers became worse at about age 8 and seems to have slown down. She is now 16. I will look up the name again and post it. It is an extremely long word that basically means…the deterioration of the tissue in the head. Sometimes trauma can cause this to increase. Plastic surgery can correct this but you must be certain the deterioration has slowed or stopped. I hope this helps some of you. When I find the definition and a link I will post it. You may email me at minyangels@yahoo.com
