Like many people’s houses, the vents on my roof are metal rather than plastic. I’m talking about the vents that over the kitchen and bathroom fans. Well, apparently, the neighborhood woodpeckers have worked out a telegraph system using these. After I got outside I found I’m not the only one that had a woodpecker on his roof this morning. As you can imagine, the sound of the pecking echos through the vent’s pipe and in to the house. It’s incredibly loud and short, and sounds like a high-speed version of that pipe pinging sound that happens in some houses.

I guess it makes a good alarm clock, if they do it at 6:30A every morning, but I sure didn’t need it after last night.
